The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets and tables. Other spaces mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces include:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas

Flooding In Your Patchogue Home

Snowmelt Flooding Drying for Patchogue Homes

After severe snowstorms that can leave Patchogue and other local parts of New York under feet of snow, it does not take long for conditions to change enough to begin melting. With rivers, streams, and other bodies of water already overwhelmed by the influx of torrential weather, this melting snow can overcome the natural barriers of banks to become groundwater flooding threats to nearby homes and businesses.

Natural flood damage in Patchogue homes must get treated like a category 3 loss, or blackwater situation unless this perceived level of contamination can get reclassified with definitive proof. The advantage of working as though this level of contamination exists can ensure that both our SERVPRO contractors and responding technicians take the appropriate levels of safety precautions regarding their personal safety and the wellbeing of our customers.

Drying up the damaged areas starts with focused extraction efforts using gas-powered trash pumps and the truck-mount extractors. Both of these units can remove water and solids together from the damaged area, making it the better choice for water removal tools versus the more traditional electric submersible pump. With surface water removed, it is easier to determine which surfaces have become exposed to the contaminated floodwater and must get discarded for involved drying and cleaning of surfaces beyond the top layer.

Content management plays a big part in flood recovery as well. By moving your belongings to a safe space, our SERVPRO professionals can reduce the total property loss and the devastation of even widespread flooding effects. Fast action for your possessions can help prevent irreparable damages and work to keep more of your treasured keepsakes close to the work area. We have in-house and off-site cleaning, drying, and deodorization techniques designed to make flood damage to your house and your belongings “Like it never even happened.”

No matter how overwhelming snowmelt flooding can be, treating this emergency as a contaminated loss can help to give your property the care and consideration it requires. You can count on the fast and confident response of our SERVPRO of Patchogue team after a flood by calling (631) 924-1801.

Some Warning Signs of Water Damage Issues in Patchogue

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

water damaged flooring Dealing with water damage in your home can be quite stressful. Contact SERVPRO for effective remediation services and help during this time.

Handling Water Damage in Your Patchogue Residence Quickly can Prevent Costly Repairs

Every homeowner dreads water damage because of the high cost of restoration. Additionally, water can completely ruin some irreplaceable items like old family photos, books, and other items with sentimental value. Water and moisture can also jeopardize the structural integrity of your house.

Water can mainly affect wooden components like walls, floors, wooden furniture, and ceilings. When facing water damage in your Patchogue residence, you can contact the technicians at SERVPRO to begin the mitigation and restoration process immediately. If you do not handle water damage properly, water can cause severe damage to the structures and contents of your home, and the destruction worsens over time. Some factors that determine the cost of restoring water-damaged properties include:

  • The severity of the water loss
  • The building materials and personal possessions that water damaged affect the cost of restoration. If restorers only have to deal with moisture, the restoration cost can be lower.
  • Size of the affected area
  • It is costlier to restore a property if water affects a larger area.
  • Additional restoration work

If water has affected drywall, you may need to replace it. Similarly, if mold had the chance to grow, restorers need to perform mold remediation. These additional issues can increase the cost of restoring your home.

It requires training, specialized equipment, and expertise to dry and restore water-damaged homes properly. Our team can take measures to protect your contents from further damage. Before beginning the water extraction process, we can move furniture and other valuable possessions from the affected area to minimize water absorption and damage.

Our team can remove the standing water using appropriate pumps. After we remove the standing water, the remnant is excess humidity, which can cause mold infestation. We have the tools required to eliminate the excess moisture. We can use air movers and axial fans to enhance air circulation.

We can also provide humidity control in affected areas to reduce moisture migration, microbial amplification, and potential secondary damage. This involves setting up and turning on dehumidifiers to reduce humidity levels within the affected areas.

Our SERVPRO team understands that dealing with a water intrusion incident can be stressful. We can handle all aspects of water damage restoration, from the initial inspection to cleaning, drying, and repairs. Our technicians can take the time to understand your concerns and address them all.

SERVPRO of Patchogue has the expertise required to restore your home correctly. Call us at (631) 924-1801 at any time for help. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

When Space Heaters Cause Fire Damage in Patchogue

2/25/2020 (Permalink)

fire damaged bedroom. smoke and soot on walls An unattended space heater caused a fire this room. Be sure to follow safety procedures when using space heaters.

Space Heater Plus Extension Cord Equals Fire Damage in Patchogue

If you currently use a space heater with an extension cord or power strip and have not experienced fire damage, you have been fortunate. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has found that more than 25,000 residential fires happen yearly due to space heaters.

A homeowner in Patchogue had fire damage from using a space heater plugged into an extension cord in a bedroom and left it running while sleeping. The cord overheated, and although contained to a small area, the charring needed significant cleanup.

Disposal of Charred and Unrestorable Items

With the homeowner's approval, the techs removed the charred table, chairs, bedding, and mattresses from the bedroom. Fortunately, the solid wood headboard, railings, and footboard had restoration potential through immersion cleaning to remove all traces of soot and smoke residues.

Removal of Smoke Damage

The techs tested the smoke residues on the wall around the bed to confirm it was dry smoke and required lifting away. This type of residue can get driven into surfaces and cause more loss if wet cleaning products or scrubbing actions get used. Once the cleanup completed, odor control applications made the bedroom ready for a new mattress and bedding.

Space Heater Safety

SERVPRO recommends the following safety tips for anyone using a space heater, particularly in the bedroom:

  • Use the space heater in a dry location, never use in the bathroom as the moisture has the potential to damage the interior of the heater
  • The space heater should be plugged directly into the electrical outlet and never into a strip plug or extension cord
  • When running a space heater, it should be the only device plugged into the outlet as they draw much power during operation
  • Unplug the heater when not using
  • If going to sleep or leaving the room, turn off the heater and unplug it
  • Place the heater at least three feet in distance from any combustible items and never run electrical cords under rugs or carpeting as they can ignite and cause a fire if the cord overheats.

SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 924-1801 has expert, certified technicians available 24/7 for fire damage restoration services. With their advanced equipment and using the latest methods for cleaning, they make the fire loss, "Like it never even happened."

Patchogue and SERVPRO Deal with Storm-Related Biohazard Abatement and Cleanup

2/20/2020 (Permalink)

Help for Unexpected Biohazard Exposure After Flood Damage in Patchogue

As if the devastation of rooms soaked with floodwater and storm surge is not enough, Patchogue residents can discover that the damage done by storms and heavy seas reveals structural hazards. Not only things like a sagging ceiling heavy with many gallons of water or windows and doors smashed by high winds and airborne debris, but also the discovery of mold, lead paint, and asbestos. The deterioration of structural elements can cause these dangerous substances to mix freely in the rubble and residue needing cleanup after the storm.

Long Term Consequences Averted

Flood damage in Patchogue requires professional assessment. Evaluation by trained, certified, and experienced disaster technicians ensure we account for all aspects of the flood scenario, including sobering surprises like mold, wet and crumbled heat-proof coatings, and soaked vermiculite insulation that contains asbestos. Lathe and plaster and even older drywall can test positive for lead paint. Failure to manage these biohazards and dispose of them properly following OSHA and health regulations can expose you and your family to significant health risks.

Impact of Contamination on Water Extraction

Whenever SERVPRO crews face flood damage, we know the water is Category 3 and must be contained and disposed of as hazardous waste. Adding the rubble of disintegrated asbestos and lead paint-coated surfaces increases the level of caution. We arrange for certified individuals to remove any mold and asbestos and lead solids. Our team contains the potentially pathogen-laden water pumped and extracted for lawful disposal. Workers shield themselves from skin and respiratory contact with the hazards by donning full bodysuit personal protective equipment (PPE.) As the remediation finishes, EPA-registered disinfection products inhibit the continued growth of any lingering bacteria, viruses, molds, and other pathogens.

Structural Drying Safeguards

Because airborne mold, asbestos, and lead debris pose risks, SERVPRO must commence drying only after abatement of all the hazardous substances. Once we get the go-ahead that remediation is complete, our Applied Structural Drying Technicians (ASD) can design a configuration of air movers and heaters to accelerate the evaporation from soaked structures without fear of spreading biohazards. Our high-efficiency dehumidifiers then capture and contain excess water vapor for disposal.

SERVPRO of Patchogue’s well-qualified and equipped crews transform your flooded residences back to a safe and clean environment even if unexpected hazards arise. Call (631) 924-1801 our support and expertise at this challenging time.

We Have The Proper Equipment To Restore Your Patchogue Home After A Fire

A room covered in debris and smoke damage after a fire disaster This fire was caused by an electric malfucniton that started in the basement of this home. We arrived right away and began restoration.

Why Mist Deodorizers Work for Fire-Damaged Patchogue Homes

Deodorization is a critical element to making fire losses “Like it never even happened,” in your Patchogue residence. With the multiple layers and damaging effects to overcome in this enormous undertaking, our SERVPRO professionals utilize a wide variety of premier tools and equipment, as well as an assortment of potent cleaning products, counteractants, and solvents. Knowing the best approach to manage the smoke odors left behind in your residence can help to make the recovery effort more efficient for your property.

Addressing odors is often considered to be one of the last steps in managing fire damage in Patchogue homes, but this is not the case. Deodorization is a part of the mitigation process for our restorers and can get worse if not adequately addressed with the cleaning and debris removal we offer. There are numerous products and equipment designed to treat different conditions and odor severities, but mist or fog deodorizers are among the top choices for neutralizing lingering noxious scents.

Mist deodorizers like the ULV and thermal foggers both present a unique approach to eliminating odors in a fire-damaged house. We have several water-based deodorization products, both scented and unscented, that work in conjunction with the available fogging equipment our SERVPRO team uses. This product gets turned into a mist or vapor in the machine and dispersed throughout the affected area.

Vapors are an ideal approach for addressing harsh odors left behind after a fire because smoke particles and soot can get into crevices, cracks, and seams. These odor catalysts can be challenging for surface cleaning to reach or impact, but a fog of our odor-neutralizing agent can get into these inaccessible areas to complete the job successfully.

Odors are an unfortunate and expected byproduct of combustion in your fire-damaged house. As widespread as these threats can become, we have many tools that can help from our thermal and ULV foggers to other powerful tools like hydroxyl generators and ozone machines. We can utilize whatever equipment necessary to overcome harsh odors and other fire loss effects in your home. Give our SERVPRO of Patchogue team a call today at (631) 924-1801.

A Balanced Drying System Means Faster Water Removal and Reduced Damage to Your Patchogue Residence

2/6/2020 (Permalink)

Flooded livingroom Our experts are ready to help you restore your Patchogue home from water damage.

Removing Excess Moisture and Applying Drying Methods After a Water Damage Incident Takes Place In Your Patchogue Home

When a home in Patchogue becomes overly damp or wet, starting the mitigation process without delay. Every second that passes allows water to migrate into previously dry areas. However, SERVPRO’s technicians receive extensive training in mitigation and restoration science, ensuring that we take the proper approach and use the most efficient machines to protect your property.

Using the correct setup ensures that the drying system used during your Patchogue home’s water removal job is balanced. This is vital to increasing the efficiency of the restorative work that follows. Removing water via pumps and extraction units increases the efficiency of our drying equipment, as well. To help cause moisture saturating carpets, walls, and furnishings to evaporate, we use air movers or box fans to increase the amount of air passing across surfaces. This air pulls moisture away from the surface, causing water deeper inside to move toward the outside of damp objects.

When accidents happen inside a home or apartment, it sometimes becomes desirable to use the residence’s heating system. Increased temperatures increase the amount of moisture that air can hold. However, we often only need to do this in an enclosed area and not the entire residence. This is what we call a ‘closed’ drying system.

We also use open drying systems, particularly when security issues are not a concern because it requires us to leave windows (and oftentimes doors) open. During the warmer months, this is a possibility that can reduce costs. Additionally, it is possible to use both and combine these systems for fast, efficient drying after water removal takes place.

Either of these systems must remain balanced, meaning that the moisture in the air is removed from it as rapidly as it evaporates into the air. The panels located on our desiccant machines help us ascertain this rate. If this rate decreases, the air becomes saturated with moisture, and damp objects stop drying. If the desiccant dehumidifiers work at a higher rate than necessary, the absence of excess moisture in the air results in a lowered efficiency. We either reduce the rate of desiccation, increase the heat and air currents, or a combination of both.

SERVPRO of Patchogue continually monitors this and other mitigation work to ensure that we finish restoring your Coram, Selden, or Bellport residence “Like it never even happened,” as quickly as possible. Call (631) 201-4813 for professional water removal experts.

Commercial Water Removal Patchogue – Chaotic Impact

Whenever water leaks are discovered in a Patchogue business, a chaotic environment usually follows. Employees may not know what to do, customers cannot enter the premises, and there may be an impact on the contents associated with your business. All of these forces can lead to lost revenue for several days or even weeks unless the situation is dealt with quickly. Or it may just be a minor inconvenience.

SERVPRO responds to commercial water removal situations in Patchogue and surrounding areas. We understand how important it is for a business to regain normal business operations quickly, within hours if possible. Every hour businesses are shut down means lost revenue, and more importantly, impacts your customers' plans and desires as well. Business to business sales impact your customer's operations, who often may have to shut down or lay their employees off temporarily.

Fast Response and Containment
SERVPRO understands how important it is for a business to recover from a water leak. We are available on a 24/7 basis and aim to respond in less than 4 hours. Based on the information provided, we respond with appropriate equipment and staff to immediately begin containment of the water leak.

Once the source of the water leak is identified and turned off, SERVPRO begins mopping up the water using hand-operated water extractors or in more extensive situations, weighted mobile water extractors. These machines remove all of the water from carpets and other flooring types. If possible and necessary, we may use a separate staging area to place dry items and those recovered from the water damaged area.

Next, we introduce air movers and dehumidifiers to remove moisture from the air and return humidity levels to normal levels. Often water penetrates spaces under heavy equipment or filing cabinets. These items are not easy to move. We utilized specialized hoses to blow dry air under these items to completely dry the area. We can "rig" different injecti-dry systems best suited to the task.

We aim to have you return to normal business operations as quickly as possible. Our business is to keep you in business.

Our SERVPRO professionals have considerable experience in the mitigation of flood losses in our region of New York, and part of this recovery process is securing the belongings of the customer from further damages. To accomplish this, our content management team can offer multiple solutions.

While flooding can affect hundreds of homes in our area a year, flood damage in Coram properties varies from one incident to another. While one home might contend with several feet of standing water throughout the main living spaces, another house might only have a couple of inches of water in the unfinished basement. When migrating water encounters contents in your home, deterioration, microbial growth, and other structural weaknesses could result.

In-House Drying and Recovery
In many situations, our SERVPRO professionals work to restore and recover damaged belongings of yours on-site rather than transport them elsewhere. Lightly affected possessions can get dried using tools like our centrifugal air movers and refrigerant dehumidifiers. Unaffected belongings that are in the path of the migrating floodwater can also get moved to a safer location out of harm’s way.

Off-Site Restoration
There are circumstances where our pack-out process is the best solution for compromised belongings in your flooded home. We can carefully move these items to our nearby facility for focused drying, cleaning, disinfection, and deodorization. With our climate-controlled warehouse, we can store your items safely until it is time for them to get returned. We can stage these items several days before their return to the house to be confident that they have gotten fully restored and sanitized.

Dry Ice Blasting

The process of dry ice blasting is suitable for cleaning a range of textures and materials in one sweep. Dry ice blasting uses carbon dioxide in solid form meshed with a pressurized air stream at targeted surfaces to clean them thoroughly. This method not only works exceptionally well, but it also helps to reduce the exposure to potential hazards from chemical cleaning agents for both employees and your food production or preparation space.

Why We Are The Leader In Coram Mold Damage Restoration

Remediating Insulation Mold Damage in a Coram Attic

While fiberglass insulation is an effective solution for resisting mold, dust and other particulates that accumulate on this installation can potentially host mold. All that mold needs to thrive is a moist environment, some organic material to feed on, and adequate temperatures for growth. Whether you have fiberglass insulation or use organic materials such as cellulose or cotton, it is crucial to minimize health effects through professional mold remediation.

If the attic of your Coram home has suffered mold damage, certified SERVPRO technicians are available within hours of your call to remove mold from your home. Remediation is key to maximizing safety for homeowners, and SERVPRO technicians receive extensive education in industry-standard mold cleanup tactics and equipment to ensure that these needs are met.

SERVPRO's Comprehensive Training Programs

SERVPRO offers a plethora of comprehensive training programs for technicians, franchise staff, and owners alike. This education is based around Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards that ensure best practices in a variety of disaster mitigation scenarios, including mold remediation and cleaning of carpet and upholstery. Whether you have a finished or unfinished attic, technicians receive extensive education that aims to safely restore your home while saving you time, money, and stress.

How SERVPRO Can Help

Because mold can cause health effects, it is crucial to establish containment measures to minimize risk for both technicians and homeowners. This can include plastic sheeting to seal off doorways and HVAC systems, as well as creating dedicated clean rooms where technicians can clean off their gear during the remediation process. These safety standards not only maximize safety during the cleaning process, but they prevent mold from spreading throughout the home during remediation.

Both wet and dry cleaning methods are used to dislodge mold and remove spores. Hepa-filter air scrubbers can be used to cleanse the air of microbes as small as 0.3 microns in size, a fraction of the average thickness of a human hair. Mold-affected porous items, such as carpet and organic insulation made of cotton or cellulose, can be removed with the informed consent of homeowners and insurance adjusters to maximize safety. Non-porous items are thoroughly cleaned to restore them to a preloss condition.

Our Experts Discuss Mold Prevention and Treatment For Your Coram Property

12/19/2019 (Permalink)

mold growing on wall SERVPRO of Patchogue (631) 201-4928 abates commercial mold damage of any scale.

Commercial Mold Damage in Coram: Prevention and Treatment

Commercial mold damage can bring a company to a grinding halt. Employees do not want to work around it, and customers may consider the business "unclean" if mold is visible on walls, ceilings, or other areas.

When commercial mold damage happens in Coram's business properties, it is almost always the result of another issue that requires addressing. Knowing the early signs of a mold infestation can save a business the cost of remediation, and it is worth it for property owners to learn the common areas and reasons for colony growth and spreading.

Schedule Regular Inspections
A monthly walk-through of the property is a large part of catching problems with the plumbing or leaks, which are frequent causes of mold. Repairing a slow leak early on can halt the progress of an infestation. Roof and gutters are also culprits, if your commercial property has attic storage - it should regularly undergo inspection to catch leaks. Properties with a basement should look for signs of elevated moisture or hydrostatic water issues, causing the cement to efflorescence or brickwork to flake. Another sign to look out for involves your nose and a musty odor that does not go away.

When Mold is Found or Suspected
Fighting back against a mold infestation is never a DIY project. SERVPRO technicians scope the property and use moisture detection equipment to find hidden pockets of moisture behind walls and other hard to see areas. When they find mold, they also routinely inspect and clean the ductwork after remediation efforts complete.

The Mold Remediation Process
Once SERVPRO techs discover mold, they contain the work area, including the vents, to inhibit any further spread of spores. Then they measure the interior humidity and lower them below sustainable levels to the mold existence. The dried colonies get removed by hand or in cases of extensive coverage that requires removal; they use methods such as soda blasting. They use HEPA-fitted vacuums to pick up the debris. Lastly, they use antimicrobial cleaning agents and sealants as needed to deter any return of the mold to the abated areas.

SERVPRO of Patchogue (631) 201-4928 abates commercial mold damage of any scale. Using their professional-grade equipment and expertise to remediate any size mold infestation and make it, “Like it never even happened.”

A Few Tips For Dealing With Fire Damage Incidents in Selden

12/15/2019 (Permalink)

fire and smoke coming out the window of a house Fire and smoke can quickly damage your home's structure and contents. Call SERVPRO right after the fire fighters leave.

Doing a Move-out the Right Way after Fire Damage Incidents in Selden

After a fire incident, it might be advisable to move contents temporarily from your property to a different location. Such action helps prevent secondary damage from corrosive substances such as soot and smoke residues or moisture action if significant amounts of water were used to quell the fire.

A move out after fire damage in your Selden property can only make sense if done cost-effectively. Some issues that can drive costs up include breakage, loss of items, and deterioration when in storage. Our SERVPRO technicians keep proper inventories, and we store the items in climate-controlled warehouses.

We also apply various cost-cutting strategies to make the process pocket-friendly. Because of fire residues and other soils, we opt to clean contents onsite before the move out whenever possible. Cleaning on-site eliminates the need to unpack, clean, and repack the items when they reach the warehouse. Minimizing the handling steps involved reduces the chances of breakage.

Another alternative cost-cutting measure is conducting partial move-outs. If some parts of the structure are secure after the fire incident, it is possible to move only a few items to external storage sites and leave the rest in the house. Our SERVPRO technicians usually opt to move the smaller items out of the premises and store large appliances and furniture items in spacious areas such as the garage or other rooms within the property.

Restoring fire damaged homes involves several steps, and knowing what to prioritize helps improve the outcome of the process. A move out is only helpful if done in a way that does not inhibit other crucial steps. For instance, if cleaning items before the move out can delay other time-sensitive steps such as drying the structure, then it is counterproductive. Our SERVPRO technicians evaluate the loss site to determine how best to do the move-out.

Moving contents helps create room for restoration and protects contents. Call SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 201-4928 to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Things You Can Do Before Helps Arrives for Water Removal at Your Selden Home

SERVPRO technicians arrive quickly to clean up water damage after the initial phone call. Homeowners can take action against the water loss during the period between the time of the call and the arrival of the technicians.

Before water damage cleanup in a Selden home, it is helpful to pick up small items on the floor. The removal of decorative baskets, magazines, children, and pet toys, and other objects makes the water extraction process go easier.

Safety First

SERVPRO technicians may advise that the electricity is turned off and do not test any electronics with possible water damage. The technicians can arrange for a professional to evaluate any devices, so there is no danger of electrical shock.

DIY Water Removal

If there are rags, towels, or mops available, use them to blot up the water. Avoid areas of the home; however, where slip and fall accidents on a wet floor have the potential to occur. A wet/dry vacuum can assist with water extraction until the technicians arrive on-site.

Special Attention to Wet Carpet

When the carpet is part of the water loss incident in a home, unless the water tests positive for contaminants or sewage, it can often dry in place. In cases where the carpet requires removal, homeowners should not attempt to lift it on their own. Technicians extract the water to make the carpet lighter to handle and cut it into strips for disposal.

Water from a Drenched Ceiling Hits the Furnishings Below

If the water came from above and damaged furnishings, it helps to prop up couch and chair cushions for drying. If there is standing water on any furnishings, wipe it away. In the event, stained wood furniture is coming into contact with wet carpeting, put foil between the legs and carpet to inhibit stain bleed into the carpet.

SERVPRO of Patchogue stands ready to help local homeowners with water damage cleanup and restoration. Call their emergency response team at (631) 201-4860, and they can make the water loss in the home. "Like it never even happened."

Some of the Biggest Problems When Dealing With Commercial Flood Damage in Coram

11/15/2019 (Permalink)

flooded room with two armchairs and small table Flood damage can quickly deteriorate your floors and furniture. Contact SERVPRO immediately for water removal.

How Flood Damage Affects Furnishings In Your Coram Area Hotel

Regardless of the type of flooring installed on your Coram property, you should always get the furniture off of your floor as soon as possible after a flood. You might have the personnel to move all of your furniture out of the structure entirely. If not, you can use wood-blocks to elevate furniture in-place to help prevent staining or bleeding.

If possible, use waxed paper to prevent rust transfer from zippers and buttons on the cushions of any furniture affected by flood damage in your Coram area hotel. Tenting helps cushions dry evenly and quickens their drying time. Keep in mind that several problems can occur after flood-waters effect upholstery and wood items in your sitting area, guest rooms, or hallway.

Including:

  • Swelling – Where the framing of your furniture, made of wood, swells, and cracks, glues can break down, causing additional damage to furniture.
  • Water Spotting – Where fabrics that are, dry-clean only may spot, requiring special attention to avoid water lines.
  • Color Bleeding – Dust covers often bleed when wet, and if the cover sags due to exposure, it could stain carpets or flooring.
  • Mildew Growth – We primarily use drying methods, including air movers and dehumidifiers to lessen drying time and prevent mildew from growing.

SERVPRO technicians witness a variety of issues concerning both upholstered and wood furnishings often used in a hotel environment. Both spotting and swelling typically occur when wood or wood composition furniture such as chairs, tables, stools, or benches get exposed to water. We remove spotting using specialized wood care products and advanced drying methods to reduce swelling, while finishers can repair warping problems that occur in wooden frames.

At SERVPRO, we always discuss repair vs. replacement costs with the customer, since it may be less expensive to replace than repair in some cases. Furniture made of particleboard, covered by a laminate, reacts poorly to water. Laminates often resist water and act as a vapor barrier, trapping moisture on one side of the material, often leading to warping.

SERVPRO of Patchogue has an entire team with Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standing by 24-hours a day, 7-days a week to supply you with emergency response personnel, advanced equipment, and valuable resources. Call today. (631) 924-1801

  • Antimicrobial – Any chemical used to prevent the development or to limit or stop the growth of microbes.

How Does a Move-Out Help With Flood Damage in Coram Properties?

A move-out is a good way to remove the contents from a home undergoing flood damage restoration for cleaning and disinfection in another location outside of the work-site.

When SERVPRO technicians perform a move out for a Coram home with flood damage, it is an exacting process, and the technicians keep it organized through detailed notes and photographs. After the completion of the necessary actions to return the home to its pre-flood condition, the technicians move the items back into the house to their original placements whenever possible.

Items Cleaned Before Moving

SERVPRO technicians often save steps when conducting move-outs by cleaning items before carefully wrapping and packing. This eliminates the need to unpack at the storage location and clean on-site there. In this manner, the stored contents remain safely put away from the potential for damage until after the completion of restoration services on the property.

Where Are Items Stored?

There are different alternatives for the storage of the contents from the flood loss affected areas. If only a portion of the property has impacts from floodwater, it is feasible to place contents in a coordinated manner in a secure location on-site such as a garage or another area of the home.  Another alternative storage solution is a secure storage pod. However, pods are not cost-efficient if there are numerous items needing placement, and there is a need for more than a single pod.

Types of Home Contents Generally Not Salvageable

During flood loss mitigation, SERVPRO technicians check each item for restoration potential through their proprietary cleaning and disinfection methods.  However, furnishings made from composite wood frequently do not react well to the absorption of water and are usually a loss. This type of item is not typically included in a move-out and with the permission of the property owner or adjuster, discarded as a flood loss item.

SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 201-4813 works hard to restore homes with flood damage for local residents. They have a wide array of tools and experience to make the flood loss "Like it never even happened."

Using Air Currents to Swiftly Remove Water Vapor and Dry Out Your House in Selden

Feeling a cool breeze on your skin during the hottest days of summer in Selden can feel very refreshing. That cooling sensation comes from the evaporation of perspiration. When no breeze passes over your skin, you no longer feel the coolness of evaporation taking place.

Within your Selden residence, water removal techniques use similar principles. We use air movers to create air currents, or breezes, inside your house. These steadily pull moisture off the surfaces throughout your house, wherever things have gotten damp. This can happen because a tub overflowed, a sink dripped down through the floor and penetrated the ceiling downstairs, or a pipe broke.

The position of these air movers is just as important as the strength of the current they create. Just like if you blow directly on your arm on a hot day and it barely feels like it is cooler, pointing an air mover so that its air currents directly hit the area we want to dry does very little of what we want it to do. Instead, pointing the air movers in a position that causes the air currents to hit the damp area at an angle produces the effect we want.

This positioning of our air movers also means that the air stays in contact with the surface longer. Pulling the water out of damp materials means that moisture ends up in the air. Instead of letting it continue floating around inside your residence, SERVPRO places desiccant machines downwind of the bounced-off air. While we do not put these directly in the way, we do put them in places where the air passes through at the most efficient rate.

We also use air scrubbers to remove dust and other contaminants in the air your family breathes. These machines perform a crucial part of keeping the air clean while we work inside your home. Removing water damage sometimes means removing damaged materials. After we pull these items out (drywall, carpet, saturated furniture), our air movers can reach into areas that otherwise might remain unreachable.

Sometimes, we do not need to remove the materials. For instance, we can attach an air mover to the edge of a carpet slightly lifted off the ground and force air underneath. This process, called floating a carpet, dries the carpeting very evenly and thoroughly. We must handle the carpet very gently and use the clips correctly to achieve the most efficient results possible.

Some Steps to Effective Water Damage Remediation in Coram

9/22/2019 (Permalink)

water damaged living room If water damage situations occur in your home, your best recourse is to contact SERVPRO. We make it "Like it never even happened."

Proper Water Damage Techniques Keeps Homes in Coram from Experiencing Microbial Infestations

Although they exist everywhere, including the houses in Coram, microbes generally do not cause problems for us. However, this is because the conditions we find most comfortable to live do not provide these microbes with a very hospitable environment. They prefer to live in dark, stagnant, damp locations on or near a food source, in particular, cellulose.

While a large percentage of a house contains cellulose, until your home in Coram sustains water damage, its normal arid conditions inhibit the growth of microbes. A tiny leak that only drips intermittently can ruin the balance that keeps microbial populations at harmless levels.

At SERVPRO, we do our best to make things inside your home comfortable for your family. This can include reducing the humidity levels back to normal, eliminating stains, and other measures to counter the damage left behind by water. As your home becomes more comfortable for your family, its interior environment becomes steadily less favorable to microbes.

When our infrared cameras detect moisture hidden in walls and other places, we use air movers and fans to force this moisture to travel to the surface where it can evaporate. Our desiccant machines extract the water out of the air, continually lowering the humidity levels bit by bit. At the same time, our air scrubbers remove spores, dust, and microbes from the air.

Sometimes, carpets get soaked by clean water. If we can remove the water and dry the carpeting before microbes take advantage of the situation, we can keep their population from exploding. Controlling microbes' growth keeps related problems at bay. These range from odors to deteriorating materials to stains on clothing.

Thus, our technicians must understand how to float a carpet correctly. Improper use of the air mover used in doing this can cause damage to the carpet, the padding, or the floor to occur. While this damage might not come directly from the air mover itself, allowing dampness to remain can affect subflooring materials and lead to warping, which can cause uneven wearing of the carpet later.

These machines and other devices make it possible to protect your home from many types of secondary water damage, including microbial-related harm. Prevention generally costs less over time and provides many benefits to your family. Instead of waiting for problems to start, we can work with you preventing them.

SERVPRO of Patchogue's specialists can help protect your Selden or Centereach home from microbial infestations. We also serve residents in Farmingville and Bellport when their houses need mitigation of water damage. Call us at (631) 201-4928 for experts who understand the necessary methods.

Our Technicians Discuss Steps To Restoring Your Coram Home After A Flood

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

Steps To Restoring Your Flood Damaged Coram Home To Its Original Condition

It is difficult to estimate the damage that flooding can cause in your home. You could extract the water, but it takes more than that to restore your home to its initial condition. You must identify items that can be salvaged and separate them from things you must discard. It is possible to restore items like furniture, appliances, photographs, and clothes.

When a flood damages your Coram residence, you need to act fast to prevent secondary destruction like mold growth. I If a week passes without working on your home, its foundation can weaken. In less than a month after a flood, the cost of repairing your home’s walls, floors and rooftop could become too expensive.

It is advisable to contact a reliable company that specializes in restoring homes destroyed by natural disasters such as SERVPRO. You need to notify your insurer about the loss. If you have flood insurance, it can pay for flood-related restoration costs. However, you need to assess the damages quickly so you can start reconditioning your home. With most insurers, you can claim the following after a flood:

    •    Drying your house
    •    Fixing items like furniture and appliances
    •    Removing debris and chemicals spread by contaminated water
    •    Restoring your home

Our crew can help you clean up your home by removing solid waste, debris, and silt from the floor. We can use rakes and shovels to remove these materials. This is also an excellent way to expose structural surfaces for additional evaluation and inspection. Our Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRTs) can also pump out the standing water from your home effectively. If the water is above two inches deep, we can use submersible pumps to extract it.

We can also sanitize the water with disinfectants before pumping it out. If there is a significant amount of sewage in basements or crawl spaces, we can work with a septic tank pump contractor to remove it. Our technicians dispose of contaminated water in a sanitary sewer system or licensed disposal facility. When using portable extractors indoors, we direct the waste down a toilet. We clean and disinfect the toilet later.

Our technicians also place air movers in the appropriate positions to dry a home. We consider the materials we are drying, such as walls, floors, ceilings, and under cabinets to determine the correct number of air movers to use and where to position them. Our SERVPRO crew then uses dehumidifiers to minimize the humidity in the air. We also use moisture sensors and moisture meters to detect the amount of moisture in your home. If moisture is present, we can take additional measures to dry the affected areas thoroughly. We restore homes quickly, helping our customers save time and money.

When you need flood damage restoration services in Patchogue, Selden or Centereach, call SERVPRO of Patchogue for help at (631) 201-4813. We have the appropriate equipment and expertise to restore your home. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Get Effective and Prompt Commercial Water Removal for Your Selden Outpatient Clinic

Outpatient medical clinics are unique because they provide for patients' needs without around the clock staff members, permanent beds, or the permits and licenses needed to host patients overnight. Instead, these facilities provide medical or surgical care to patients who return home on the same day. Unfortunately, water damage incidents can occur and disrupt their daily activities.

A main water supply line can break and flood most of your facility. In such a case, you need prompt commercial water removal for your Selden outpatient clinic. Timelines and thoroughness are crucial because the clinic needs to remain in operation, especially if surgical procedures are taking place.

When a water loss incident occurs in your outpatient medical facility, one of the severe consequences is destruction to costly medical equipment. Water leaks can also cause unsightly stains on drywall, interior surfaces, and ceilings. Another critical effect of water damage in a medical facility is its impact on affected patients. For instance, if it is necessary to shut down electricity because of a water intrusion incident, some medical procedures may not go on.

To prevent extensive damage, you can place a trash can below the leak to keep the surrounding area from getting wet. Also, cover all equipment, furniture, and documents that are at risk of water damage with plastic sheeting. Stabilizing the environment following a water loss mishap is a priority. You can call a water damage restoration firm like SERVPRO to assist the facilities management in adjusting conditions in the affected areas to meet the level of relative humidity and temperature ideal for recovery.

Our Water Removal Restoration Technicians (WRTs) can use wet/dry vacuums to remove standing water. Wet-vacuuming is effective in removing the water because of the amount of vacuum lift that a portable extractor provides. Wet-vacuuming is useful for extracting water on all flooring surfaces. Controlling humidity in a building is also as crucial as controlling the spread of water. One way to accomplish this is ventilating the building to reduce the buildup of extra humidity. Ventilating means opening windows and doors to allow the outside air, which has low moisture to come inside. We can also use air movers to encourage air circulation and portable dehumidifiers to speed up drying.

After the initial water recovery steps, Our SERVPRO crew can assess the number of floors affected, and the materials that water has ruined, such as furniture, equipment, and paper records. Our team can also inspect the drywall to determine if the water damage is severe. Soaked drywall may sag and crumble. We offer professional and controlled demolition of building components with an emphasis on appropriate retention and salvaging of non-affected areas. We can subcontract the necessary repairs to licensed contractors.

When there is water damage in your outpatient clinic, SERVPRO of Patchogue can help you remove the water and dry the affected areas. Contact us at (631) 201-4813 for fast restoration.

Commercial Water Removal Coram – Employee Lounge Water Overflow

Many small commercial offices have an employee lounge with a fridge, perhaps a small stove and a kitchen style sink to wash and rinse dishes. When the water was left running by an employee, the sink overflowed, and water ran most of the night covering the floor in the lounge area as well as nearby offices. An employee was distracted by an emergency phone call and forgot about turning the tap off.

The office manager called our SERVPRO office in Coram the next morning to help with commercial water removal. We responded immediately to help this customer. We understand how important it is to keep an office open and able to respond to their customers. Any downtime can mean lost customers and lost revenue for the business.

One of the employees had shut the water off when she arrived at the office in the morning. Our team arrived to find water soaking the carpets in the lounge area, three nearby offices, and conference room used to greet customers and hold meetings with clients. Our technicians quickly got to work using water removal equipment to remove excess water from the carpeting.

We removed all of the chairs and tables from the offices, conference room, and lounge areas.  Tables and desks, along with computer systems, were removed as well leaving a clear area for our team to work. None of the computers or electrical systems were impacted. After extracting water from the carpeting, large air movers were brought in to further dry the carpets and linoleum flooring in the lounge area. Warm, dry air from other areas of the office was blown into the affected area and exhausted out the emergency exit door at the rear of the building.

The employees were able to use the lounge area later that day. We checked all areas with moisture meters to confirm the area was completely dry. The offices and conference room were available for occupancy several days later after the carpets had dried entirely. Carpets are prone to ripple and separate from the backing when it becomes wet. The carpeting was relatively new, and the quick action by our SERVPRO team mitigated the damage to the flooring.

Restoring Your Patchogue Apartment After Sprinkler Suppression

Sprinkler systems can work quickly to suppress the spread and severity of fire damages to your Patchogue apartment and neighboring properties, but it comes with restoration requirements of its own. Not only do professional restoration technicians need to address lingering concerns like soot and smoke odors that can infiltrate the entire apartment, but with sprinkler systems, our team must also overcome widespread water loss effects as well.

Understanding the best approaches to overcome fire damage in Patchogue apartments begins with thoroughly assessing the situation. Our SERVPRO professionals must work quickly to determine the best approaches to both contain the current effects to the damaged areas and begin mitigating these losses to reduce out of pocket expenses and overall restoration times for our customers. The faster that this work can begin, the less likely that other apartments adjoined to yours also become affected by the smell or other effects lingering after the disaster.

Among the chief concerns with sprinkler suppression is addressing any of the saturation of structural elements, kitchen cabinetry, and flooring throughout the apartment. Depending on the severity of the fire and the installed products to suppress it, the volume of water left throughout the unit can vary between damp surfaces and an inch or more of standing water. Addressing water damage often comes before other fire recovery solutions, as saturation and overexposure can be more detrimental to material composition and integrity, which can ultimately require removal and replacement without thorough drying.

Another concern is that while fire damage might stay localized to a single area, many apartment suppression systems involve the entire unit simultaneously. This design presents water damage and threats to areas where fire damage never occurred. Fortunately, along with the premier equipment that our SERVPRO team has for fire recovery and restoration, we also arrive with the full measure of our water extraction and drying tools to suit every need and condition.

Addressing the water effects after a fire might be an initial step, but there are still many obstacles to overcome to make this disaster “Like it never even happened.” We can clean soot and smoke residues from surfaces, employ soda and media blasting techniques to restore the look and function of countertops and other solid surfaces, and utilize an array of devices to deodorize your apartment and its contents thoroughly.

Fire losses can happen at any time. Trust in our SERVPRO of Patchogue team to handle all of the effects that might come along with them. Give us a call at (631) 201-4813.

Chemical Sponges for Dry Smoke Cleanup in Your Coram Home

8/19/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damage in Coram is no joke, call us today to get you through the smoke.

Our SERVPRO technicians can answer all your fire smoke cleanup questions for your Coram residents.

With high-heat fires that burn quickly throughout Coram homes, specific effects exist for restoration teams or handy homeowners to battle once first responders have left the premises. While there is much that a property owner might need to overcome symptoms the fire leaves behind, smoke and soot residues are often among the most widespread and damaging conditions that can exist. Cleaning up these residues can be nearly impossible for those untrained in fire recovery and the cutting-edge equipment used in the restoration industry at this time.

Dry smoke cleanup can be overwhelming when assessing fire damage to Coram homes. Much like soot damages, this residue can travel far beyond the ignition point for the fire – moving even beyond where the other effects have stopped. Having the right tools for the job makes the restoration process more comfortable and more efficient, and that is a commitment that our SERVPRO team has made.

We know how to manage dry smoke conditions, and that begins with the employment of high-powered vacuums that can collect loose sediment and particulates that have come to rest on a surface. This approach is also ideal for soot buildup on specific surfaces. While we have advanced products and techniques to address all mitigation work for your property, the most popular cleaning tool for dry smoke is a chemical sponge.

Our SERVPRO team arrives at every fire recovery project with a collection of chemical dry cleaning sponges, as they discourage wet cleaning practices which can result in smearing and staining. With a rubber material that can collect residue, dust, debris, and soot, each unit can clean an average of fifty square feet of damaged surface area to make fire loss situations “Like it never even happened.”

No matter what kind of residues and harmful symptoms might linger behind after a fire loss incident, our SERVPRO of Patchogue specialists can help. We have the tools and expertise to quickly address aspects like cleaning, deodorization, and even pack-out content management solutions. Give us a call anytime that you need us at (631) 201-4813.

The contents of your home take a beating, and you might believe the bulk of them are headed for the landfill. Before you do anything rash in the post-blaze confusion, consider a pack-out.

Why Handle Fire Damage Remediation Alone in Your Coram Residence

7/16/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke odors can linger forever if not dealt with properly. Call the professionals at SERVPRO today for remediation assistance.

Why SERVPRO Uses Different Approaches to Combat Odors Caused by Fire Damage in Coram Residences

The variety of materials inside your home contain a mixture of different substances. Each substance is based on organic matter, synthetic products, or a metal. When a fire happens, the assortment of things that burn result in different kinds of smoke that stream throughout your Coram home. Many synthetics melt before burning, causing them to produce gases instead of, or along with, visible smoke. By-products of fire can cause health effects in occupants.

This is why SERVPRO mitigates houses in Coram to eliminate smoke odors by focusing on their sources. Doing so requires us to rely on multiple techniques. One cause of noxious odors that devastate a home come from the thousands of small droplets that fizzle out from plastics and rubber items as they melt or burn. SERVPRO's Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certified technicians clean away these droplets from the surfaces in your home during part of the normal mitigation process. However, this only takes care of one source of bothersome smells.

The air can become filled with vapors, gases, and particulate matter during a blaze, and these continue to pollute the air long after the fire gets extinguished. SERVPRO uses Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) recommended practices in the use of different machines to extract these, and subsequently, associated odors, from out of your property.

IICRC-approved methods regarding odor control also include using powerful and long-lasting agents that overpower stagnant odors, which works well with mystery odors or those that seem to come from everywhere. While you might want to use store-bought sprays and timed air fresheners, these do not provide adequate coverage compared to the ones we use.

Our building services department further helps reduce bad odors and what causes them by removing fire-damaged materials like blackened walls and melted carpet and then reinstalling new components. Other services, like electronics repair, help our customers recover more fully, faster, and with less expense after a fire, than people who do not use qualified services.

When Disaster Strikes the Structure and Contents of Your Patchogue Property--SERVPRO Is Here for Restoration Services

The SERVPRO Cleanup and Restoration Team--We're Faster To Any Size Disaster in Patchogue

Why Use Professional Restoration Services in Patchogue Homes?

Patchogue homeowners can only do so much preventative maintenance to avoid costly home disasters such as damage from severe weather that can cause mold or from a house fire or broken water line. When unavoidable loss happens to a property, it is vital to engage professional restoration services rather than rely on DIY methods of cleanup. The reason is simple; inadequate cleaning leads to more significant issues such as mold from improper mitigation of water damage or foul odors in the home from deeply embedded soot particles that home cleaning products are powerless against. In cases such as groundwater caused by storms, it is crucial to avoid contact with the water until completion of the testing for contaminants, including the possibility of sewage, is needed.

In Patchogue homes, fire damage occurs most often in kitchens and rooms with fireplaces. Improper storage of flammable materials in attached garages leads to a large number of residence fires. A sobering statistic from the National Fire Protection Association shows that the average number of fires occurring in an average household during a lifetime is five. SERVPRO teams members hold certifications as Fire and Smoke Damage Restoration Technicians FSRT and know that different types of smoke require different approaches to cleaning and restoration.

  •   Wet Smoke is a result of the combustion of  rubber or plastic items. These types of fires burn more slowly at a lower temperature and leave behind a greasy residue with a strong, pungent odor.
  •  Dry Smoke occurs from the burning of wood and paper products and generally exposed the area to higher temperatures during the blaze. The residue left behind is easier to lift off surfaces but usually associated with more destructure fires.
  •   Puffback is not uncommon in New York properties and happens when a furnace malfunctions and blows soot throughout the HVAC duct system. Every area with a vent receives soot damage, and restoration requires repairs to the furnace and thorough cleaning of the ductwork.

In cases where only a section of the residence has fire and smoke damage, we immediately contain the area upon arrival. The most common method uses heavy 6 mil plastic to cover doorways and vents to inhibit the spread of soot in currently undamaged areas of the home. Once our technicians complete fire debris cleanup and restoration efforts, our Odor Control Techs OCT ensure there are no lingering smoke odors left in the property.

When water damage occurs in Patchogue properties, it requires extraction and drying as fast as possible. Because water follows the path of least resistance, it wicks into sheetrock, flows behind baseboards and other hard to reach places. The result of inadequate water removal is weakening of building materials such as warping and buckling of sheetrock, mold, and foul odors.

If you experience a water loss in your home and there are any indications water migrated in hard-to-reach areas such as within walls, ceilings or subflooring, it is crucial to bring in a professional restoration services company to ensure the removal of all excess moisture occurs along with thorough drying.

SERVPRO employees have intensive training and hold certifications as Applied Structural Drying Technicians (ASD) and Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRT). In their extensive training and experience, they learn the best practices for each water loss mitigation. We have specialized equipment to locate moisture hidden within the structure and perform water extraction. Extra time spent on water removal means less drying time and less exposure to excessive moisture to both the residence and possessions.

Homeowners are glad to hear that carpet that is saturated by clean or gray water is not automatically a loss. Our certified Carpet Cleaning Technicians CCT have methods for drying carpet in place, or when that is not feasible, we can dry, clean and sanitize the carpet in-plant, saving the homeowner the stress and cost of replacing the floor covering.

When homeowners in Patchogue find mold damage in their residence, it is not a DIY project. Any disturbance to mold colonies has the potential to spread spores, creating a more significant problem in the home. Anywhere favorable conditions exist, the spores may set up new colonies and infest additional areas of the house.

SERVPRO employees are Applied Microbial Remediation Technician AMRT and know how to remediate mold safely. We utilize containment around mold affected areas in the home consisting of heavy plastic sheeting or airlock barriers with a zipper chamber depending on the level of infestation and potential of spreading spores.

Removal of mold colonies merely removes the visual. We use advanced equipment such as thermal imaging and probes to locate areas of excessive moisture behind walls, under flooring or other places in the home.

After thoroughly drying and performing mold abatement, including the application of antimicrobial sealer to inhibit regrowth, our technicians also identify the issues that created the environment conducive to mold growth and recommend the appropriate measures to fix.

Storm damage in Patchogue residences can happen almost without warning. Intense storms, flash floods, and wind damage are not uncommon reasons for water clean up. Our employees have training and certification as Health and Safety Technicians. Along with their other intensive training through the best practices as outlined by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification IICRC give them the knowledge to address loss in the home from wild weather. We advise homeowners to avoid contact with groundwater until it is tested to determine if the water contains toxins, chemicals, or sewage.

We use our water extraction equipment, which includes submersible pumps for deep water situations, to perform water removal quickly and then dry the property using our advanced equipment to handle particular situations such as the need to force air behind wall cavities or floor joists. Our technicians remove Items that have restoration potential through cleaning and remove items too damaged to restore. All items handled are photographed and cataloged to expedite insurance claims.

    Why SERVPRO?
We have more than 40 years of combined experience in both the insurance and restoration services industries serving the Greater Patchogue community. Our certified, trained technicians approach every mitigation with both compassion and a commitment to lessening loss through restoration whenever possible. How Flash Flooding Can Affect Lower-Lying Coram Homes

6/21/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO can help keep detrimental conditions out of your way.

We understand the priorities.

Flooding in any situation can be a damaging and traumatic experience for Coram property owners. While you work quickly to protect what you can of your house and its contents, your priority is keeping the occupants of the home safe, which can leave many areas of the property exposed to flood effects and water damage. Our professionals have a quick response with industry-leading recovery equipment to help protect your property and its contents from the time that we first arrive.

Flash flood damage in your Coram home can be among the most detrimental of conditions, as there is little warning or preparation that property owners can do to safeguard the house from the powerful natural disaster. For those in lower-lying areas, these damages can be even more substantial. The basins of area topography can experience the full measure of these powerful water waves, often damaging both underground levels like basements and the main floor of the house as well.

Overcoming what damages exist in your property after a natural disaster like this requires an immediate response from homeowners to secure the services of our trained SERVPRO professionals. We have a ready trailer stocked with extraction and drying equipment to get mitigation work started quickly. That, combined with our experience in controlled demolition, can quickly protect your home from contamination and bacterial threats that can often exist after natural flooding scenarios.

Contamination is often a threat for homes and those exposed, as flood water can contract multiple types of bacteria, chemicals, and other hazardous substances in its path to your lower-lying residence. We have a fully trained and experienced biohazard cleaning team certified through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) as well as the American Bio Recovery Association (ABRA) to offer disinfection and decontamination solutions for your property in the mitigation phase.

Many threats exist in any home affected by flash flooding, so you should trust the team with the experience and training to handle them all. Our SERVPRO of Patchogue professionals are available 24/7 by calling (631) 924-1801.

The Importance Of Air Scrubbers During Our Fire Damage Restoration Process In Coram

6/14/2019 (Permalink)

Call us at (631) 924-1801 for skilled professionals who care about the condition of your family's home.

Why SERVPRO Uses Air Scrubbers While Mitigating Fire Damage In Properties In Coram

The size of particles that settles all over your home in Coram during a fire makes it easy for many of them to float back up into the air. These particles not only can cause irritation and other health effects in anyone inside the property, but they also produce the signature scent characteristic in homes after a fire occurred. The continuous disintegration of these particles means that the air in your home always seems contaminated.

The ever-present scent gives away the existence of soot in the air, which is why SERVPRO uses powerful air scrubbers during the time we work inside your Coram home mitigating fire damage. Our air scrubbers help clean the air of dust, pollen, microbes, and other pollutants, also, due to their HEPA filters.

Smoke particles can give the appearance of being harmless despite their dirty and greasy properties. Breathing them can cause severe health effects, though, so cleaning the air becomes a priority for us. With a microscope, you can see their actual appearance. Jagged edges make them sharp and able to etch into metals and other hard materials. Soft materials can also become increasingly damaged; the longer soot layers rest on their surfaces.

Cleaning soot from your home includes the use of brushes that whisk dry carbon off surfaces, while greasy deposits get treated with sponges and cloths, instead.  Some of this soot ends up in the air as we clean your home. Working on ceilings and higher areas on walls adds to the amount of soot floating in each room.

During the act of cutting damaged walls and other materials away from adjacent areas that remain unscathed, additional dust enters the area. Air scrubbers remove this before we can breathe any of it, and also before it settles on furnishings inside your home.

SERVPRO of Patchogue arrives ready to start working on mitigating fire damage with both air scrubbers and other specialized equipment. Our employees have both in-house training and on the job experience in a wide range of restoration and mitigation settings. No job is too large, complicated, nor too small for us to complete for our valued customers in Yaphank, Blue Point, of Centereach. Call us at (631) 924-1801 for skilled professionals who care about the condition of your family's home.

SERVPRO of Patchogue can clean, restore, and rebuild your property affected by fire damage.

Controlled Demolition For Fire Damage In Patchogue Home

When it comes to fire damage, our goal is always to assist homeowners in limiting fire loss by using our restoration methods. We undergo extensive training, and we keep up with the latest advancements for both equipment and techniques in the restorative sciences.

When our SERVPRO location answered a call to mitigate fire damage in a home in Patchogue, we found a living room gutted by fire. Too many high wattage appliances running at the same time on a strip plug caused an ungrounded wall plug to overheat and sparked a blaze within the wall cavity.

When the homeowner contacted us and told us their home contained both smoke and water issues. We advised them to stay out of the damaged area of the house. On arrival, we contained the entryways to the living room with heavy plastic to halt the spread of soot.

Exposure to water causes damage and makes items heavy. SERVPRO technicians removed the items from the room that had no potential for restoration due to damage from the fire. We extracted water from the wet carpet and padding so it would lessen the weight and make it easier to remove.

Mitigation on the room included removing all the debris left behind, and then we cut away the charred sheetrock so the wall cavity could get adequate ventilation to dry. After water extraction, we used hand vacuums with HEPA filtration to pick up all the soot.

After drying the water-affected areas of the room, air scrubbers with HEPA filters were used to capture the remaining odor-causing soot particles in the room. Once we had cleaned and disinfected surfaces, we deployed a Hydroxyl generator to neutralize any residual smoke odors so the home could be repaired and rebuilt without trapped odors.
We offer rebuilding services, and once we completed mitigation on the living room area, our SERVPRO crew chief gave the homeowner and adjuster a detailed list of the remediation as well as the necessary repairs to bring the room back to its preloss condition.

SERVPRO of Patchogue can clean, restore, and rebuild your property affected by fire damage. We are available 24-hours at (631) 924-1801 no matter if the fire loss is large or small, We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Our Flood Damage Technicians Can Cleanup And Rebuild Your Patchogue Home

SERVPRO of Patchogue stands ready 24/7 to serve the local area for mitigation of flood damage.

SERVPRO Cleanup And Rebuild From Flood Damage In Patchogue Home

Flood damage is one of the most severe events a property owner faces. Groundwater is a category three biohazard, also known as black water and should be professionally mitigated for health reasons.

SERVPRO received a call to assist a homeowner in Patchogue with the cleanup of flood damage. The water affected several rooms in the home, and along with the strong odor, our technicians scoped the water loss areas and found substantial damage to the structure and contents.

The homeowner had turned off the electricity in the home, so we brought our generators so we could get to work. Water migrates rapidly once inside a home absorbed into porous materials such as carpet, padding and gets wicked into sheetrock.

Safety is a priority on any cleanup, particularly with black water sites such as this. Our technicians wore protective gear, including respirators with P100/organic vapor cartridges. As they entered, they sprayed EPA-registered disinfectants on the affected areas to limit exposure to contaminants during remediation of water.

We stayed in communication with both the homeowner and adjuster during the cleanup phase, and in this case, the affected rooms required controlled demolition removal of the water damaged sheetrock. The carpet and pads in each room required disposal, and we rolled and tied at the curbside per city regulations. We examine the restoration potential of porous home contents affected by black water on an item-by-item basis; however, usually, they require disposal as a loss.

Once we completed the debris removal and water extraction stage, we worked on drying the structure in preparation for rebuilding. Forcing warm, dry air into the wall cavities and floor joists ensure the structure dries from the bottom up and negates mold and moisture retention issues.

After drying, our technicians clean and disinfect all remaining surfaces to get them ready for rebuilding. Our SERVPRO location offers building services, and we gave the adjuster and homeowner a list of the necessary structural restorations needed to bring the home to its preloss condition with seamless service from start to finish.

SERVPRO of Patchogue stands ready 24/7 to serve the local area for mitigation of flood damage. Call us at (631) 924-1801 for immediate assistance with your water loss situation whether it is a corner in a room or the entire home; We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

How Professionals Dry Water From Hidden Wall Cavities in Patchogue

5/15/2019 (Permalink)

Each vehicle in our Green Fleet is stocked with equipment to quickly dry your home.

Removing Water Damage from Wall Cavities in Patchogue Homes

Many homeowners do not realize how far-reaching water loss effects can be in their Patchogue residence until professional restoration specialists can show them. Unfortunately, many of these same homeowners mistakenly believe that their preliminary drying efforts have removed the threat, but this is not always the case. In many situations, water can spread into wall cavities, ceiling spaces, and beneath flooring where it is impossible to notice without sophisticated moisture detection tools.

Knowing how widespread these effects can be for water damage in your Patchogue home, our SERVPRO team can respond fast to these emergencies. Once we have identified the source of this damage, we can use these moisture reading tools to determine the presence of moisture pockets and dampness in the walls and in areas where accessibility is an issue. Our mitigation solutions can address saturation and standing water from the time that our team arrives, but we must know where these secondary effects exist to direct our equipment to resolve these situations as well.

Once moisture detection equipment has determined the location of these pockets of dampness and saturation in wall cavities and other challenging areas to reach, we get to work on reaching these effects. While air movers and dehumidifier units can address much of the water and moisture content within the affected areas of your property, we also have specialized machines designed to reach wall cavities and ceiling spaces such as our Injecti-Dry system.

With a minimalistic approach, we can inject hoses into this space between drywall and wood framing to force heated air into this region of the house. By running the dehumidifiers through this process as well, the units can pick up on added vapor in the environment when the Injecti-Dry system evaporates moisture and dampness.

We understand that drying out this portion of your home is just a small piece of the equation to restore any property after a water loss incident fully, but addressing these concerns can help to prevent hazards like mold growth from occurring. Trust our SERVPRO of Patchogue professionals to make water loss effects “Like it never even happened” in your house. Give us a call today at (631) 924-1801.

Restoring Patchogue Properties Flooded by the Rise of Swan River

Swan River is a staple of the landscape and even some of the economic backbone of the Greater Patchogue area. Much like any other body of water though, substantial rainfall over a prolonged period can cause water levels to rise to hazardous heights. When the water levels crest after a few days of collecting runoff from natural paths and the sanitary sewers, homes along the banks of Swan River become at risk for rising waters and flooding in their basements and main floors. Preventing this intrusion might not be possible but restoring the property afterward can be more efficient and effective with the acquisition of our experienced professionals.

We know how devastating flood damage can be to Patchogue homes with the river levels rise to severe levels. Even if many of these homes only experience flooding of their basements, this can still be a costly and widespread damaging event that requires immediate attention from trained IICRC-Certified Water Restoration Technicians like our SERVPRO team. With readiness for all emergencies that threaten our region, our experienced team remains prepared for natural disasters that could occur.

While many homes have taken preventative measures to avoid catastrophic water intrusions along Swan River, these solutions are rarely entirely effective. With many of the modern homes throughout the region constructed with finished basements, our SERVPRO professionals must react quickly to provide effective mitigation services that can prevent the spread of these effects to new areas while our technicians implement controlled demolition techniques to remove damaged materials.

With the potential for chemical and bacterial contamination of rising floodwaters, the cleaning done by our technicians in your home plays a vital role in preventing the presence of hazardous contaminants and germs.

While you cannot predict when rainfall has occurred steadily and heavily enough to allow for dangerous cresting of Swan River, but when this occurs, you can count on SERVPRO of Patchogue to help you through the restoration of your damaged property. Give us a call anytime that you need us at (631) 924-1801.

Unwanted Water and Moisture in Your Patchogue Home? Just Call SERVPRO for Water Damage Cleanup and Mitigation

Drying and Cleaning Your Water-Damaged Patchogue Home

With the many ways that water loss incidents can occur in your Patchogue home, it might not always be easy to identify the source or the severity of the situation. While many homeowners believe that they can address damages like these on their own, many fail to realize the full extent of the problem or lack the specialized equipment necessary to manage it completely. Our professionals have advanced recovery tools and mitigation equipment to get working on returning your property to preloss condition as soon as we arrive at your damaged residence.

With the many layers of water damage that could exist beginning with the source of the incident in your Patchogue home, you need to understand the full extent of the damage as quickly as possible. The job is not completed once the visible water has been removed. Our SERVPRO technicians can identify these moisture pockets, but more importantly, have the specialized equipment to address thoroughly drying exposed elements and materials.

Drying is one of the most critical elements of water damage recovery, and our SERVPRO professionals can work to quickly address these concerns by installing our high-velocity air movers and our dehumidifiers from the time that we first recognize most substantially affected areas of the house. With the efficiency of these systems and our large number of units, we can work to quickly remove all excess moisture and saturation from broad areas in a short period.

Cleaning is a vital component of returning a property to its original condition. While much of the work that we do hinges on preserving and protecting installed construction materials, often these surfaces, flooring, and others affected portions of your property require advanced cleaning techniques to look their best after an incident. Our IICRC-Certified technicians can arrive with carpet and upholstery cleaning equipment, as well as OSHA-approved cleaning agents and equipment to begin restoring the look and function of your home once mitigation steps have completed.

While there are many steps to restoring your home after any type of water loss incident, it is often not something that a homeowner can do on their own. Preparing Your Home & Business for Winter Weather

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

Tips for Preparing Your Home for Winter Weather

  • Keep Cabinet doors open during cold spells. This allows warm air to circulate around pipes.
  • Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets, especially if the pipes for faucets run through unheated or uninsulated areas of your home.
  • Consider shutting off outdoor faucets. Find the shut-off valve in the basement or crawl space and turn it to “off.”
  • If you follow the previous step, then open the outdoor faucet to help insure it drains completely and the inner valve is shut off.
  • Ensure gutters are clean and secure. Leaves and debris accumulate, causing a damming effect on gutters, which could lead to roof problems and water damage.
  • Proper maintenance of your furnace can help reduce the risk of puffbacks.

Tips for Preparing Your Home for Winter Weather

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Ask SERVPRO of Patchogue about starting an Emergency Ready Profile for your business.

Freedom Fit 5k Run!

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Patchogue, we like to sponsor a lot of events that take place right in our community.  This event was a 5k run hosted by the organization LIAT which we sponsored by providing water bottles and orange juice to all the race runners while also running in the race.

LIAT stands for Long Island Against Trafficking, and was founded when a group of individuals were awakened to the realities of human sex trafficking while attending a lecture. The words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter" resonated in their hearts and minds. They were compelled to join in the fight for those sex trafficked on Long Island and abroad. Long Island Against Trafficking was established to raise funds for those victimized and raise public awareness of this modern-day form of slavery. They accomplish this by speaking at public and private events as well as lobbying at the local, state, and federal levels. They plan and host fundraisers to aid in financially supporting the victims. They also partner with other human rights organizations to create a powerful collective voice. To date, LIAT has raised more than $750,000 towards the aid of trafficking victims.

This event was an overall great day for all who participated and SERVPRO of Patchogue proudly supports everything that the LIAT stand for and everything they do to make Long Island a better place to be.

Bathroom Fire

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

Imagine walking into your bathroom…the one you and your family use every day….picture your kids splashing away in the bubble bath…and then look at this image. As remediators, we see this type of scenario on a regular basis, but how devastating for a homeowner to see their beloved home that they’ve worked so hard for be in such disarray.

At SERVPRO of Patchogue, we not only have the homeowner’s best interest in mind to work at a fast pace so that the rebuild process can begin, but we also need to be responsible to our crew members to be sure that they protect themselves from any hazards they encounter at these jobs. Here you see various building materials from pieces of charred wood, fallen saturated drywall and different types of soaked insulation.

Our job is to make homeowners feel that we care about helping them put their lives back together as quickly as we can. And always with compassion!

We Don't "Just Clean-Up"

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

When fires occurs, in both residential homes and business alike, it’s not just the cleaning up of the structural areas that we need to be concerned with. This photo shows a lot of damage to the home itself (floors, ceilings, walls, insulation, etc.), but just look at the personal property damage!

Our crews have to be so careful with the homeowner’s personal belongings because the insurance companies need very specific documentation in order to appropriately compensate the insured so they they have monies to replace all of the damaged items. The fallen debris must be sifted through prior to bagging for disposal so that any contents, which may be very small items, can be separated for further valuation.

SERVPRO of Patchogue’s team members need to be very aware of properly bagging and separating these items, so taking our time in small spaces with lots of contents is a very important part of the clean-up process.

What's In The Air Your Breathing

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

If you have a ducted heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system in your home, do you clean it regularly? This system is what circulates both heat and air conditioning throughout your home, however, it also captures common air pollutants such as common dust, animal dander if you have pets, shed skin cells (yuck!), mold spores and even trace cleaning chemicals used in everyday life.

These systems are designed to capture these contaminants, but depending on your household environment (how many people and pets living in a certain amount of square footage), the ducted systems should be routinely cleaned as there will come a point in which not only will they not be working efficiently, but they can actually start to emit the contaminants back into the living space, compromising the air quality in the home. This could be especially important if the home’s inhabitants have allergies or compromised immune systems.

Inventory of Personal Property

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

When a homeowner suffers a water or fire damage loss, often times many personal effects are damaged beyond repair and will need to be evaluated and itemized for the insurance company in order to ensure proper compensation to the insured.

Under most homeowner policies, insured’s are deserved of being reimbursed for “like kind and quality”. Ultrasonic Blind Cleaning

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

The fastest, easiest way to sanitize, deodorize and restore luster to your blinds!

Dust, pollution, nicotine, and other contaminants dull the look of your blinds and form a layer of unhealthy dirt.  Dusting creates static electricity that attracts dust and dirt.  Scrubbing is tiresome, ineffective, and can actually damage blinds.

Ultrasonics. The only way to clean blinds.

SAFE. Ultrasonics is a revolutionary cleaning method that uses a hot water bath, specially formulated cleaning solutions, and sound waves to gently clean blinds without scrubbing or abrasives.

EFFECTIVE.  Ultrasonics removes all dirt, dust, grease, grime, nicotine, soot, pollen, pollution, and other contaminates.  Vanes, head rails, ladders, and cords- even the working mechanisms you don’t see are thoroughly cleaned, lubricated, and brightened! Ultrasonics gives you cleaner, healthier, brighter blinds, even if you have years of dried on dirt.

ECONOMICAL. Ultrasonic cleaning is inexpensive, and minor compared to replacing blinds or using any other cleaning method.

CONVENIENT. Take down your own blinds and save! Bring in your blinds, or for a minimal charge, we will take them down for you.

Being Aware of What To Look For!

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

In this photo which is from a residence that incurred a water damage, our technicians always need to know what types of materials are damaged. Here we can see drywall, paneling, concrete, wood studs and plywood, all soaked from the broken pipe.

We follow proper protocol to understand what materials should be cut out due to greater potential for mold growth (also contingent upon the length of time from the water damage and time when we get called in and arrive on site) versus what materials can be dried in place and salvaged.

Of course each situation is unique and protocol can change based on a variety of factors. This is why at SERVPRO of Patchogue we make sure that our technicians are properly trained to be ready for any situation.

Sewage Back-Up

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

sewage back-up in basement

Yuck! What’s THAT???!

Well, we never said it was a glamorous job! Sometimes when we are called into situations, we are not even exactly sure of what we are getting ourselves into. Biohazard conditions can present themselves in many ways. This was called in as a water damage, however, upon arrival it was clear that it was not quite that simple. Both the visual inspection and odor presented indicated that there was sewage contamination as well.

For the sake of the inhabitants of the home, as well as our crew members, extra precautions were necessary to ensure that we leave this space free of any contaminants that could be harmful. Proper personal protective equipment including suits, rubber boots, and gloves and respirators were imperative for our staff and the proper disinfectants ensured that we left the home safe for rebuilding.

Your local SERVPRO Franchise Professionals are trained to safely and effectively remove biohazardous substances and prepare waste for proper disposal according to OSHA, EPA and state and local health regulations.  Equipped with the necessary safety equipment and cleaning products, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals help turn unsafe environments into clean, safe homes and offices.  SERVPRO Franchise Professionals can help with:

  • Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Methamphetamine Labs
  • Crime Scene Residues
  • Arson
  • Vandalism
  • Sewage Backups
  • Black Water Intrusions
  • Mold Mitigation and Remediation

Fragile Situations

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

As professional restorers we must face situations that are often times very difficult and emotional for the party for which we are doing the work.  We must also be aware that it can affect our staff members as well and be prepared to deal with this element accordingly.

In some instances we must report to jobs in which a homeowner has passed on and perhaps it goes unknown for a period of time for a variety of reasons.  This requires that we have our crew members don full personal protective equipment as these circumstances are considered to be biohazards due to the nature of the work to be performed. In these instances, working proficiently and timely is of utmost importance so that the insured can begin the rebuilding process, both physically and emotionally. It is no doubt the most difficult aspect of our work.

What are "SDS" Sheets?

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

Safety data sheet (SDS), material safety data sheet (MSDS), or product safety data sheet (PSDS) are all terms used to describe specific papers written about all cleaning products and chemicals that we may use at a home or business and these products vary based on what type of situation we are addressing.

As responsible remediators, we must be prepared to provide information to our clients. This is especially the case where either inhabitants have compromised immune systems or allergic sensitivities or when we are working in a commercial environment and business owners must be prepared to answer employee concerns.

Our crews are all equipped with binders including the SDS sheets for any products that will be used on the job so that if the customer has any questions we can answer them quickly and informatively.

Types of Biohazards

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

Bloodborne Pathogens: SERVPRO Franchise Professionals remove and dispose of bodily fluids, tissue and other potentially pathogenic substances resulting from accident, trauma, crime or death.  Trained SERVPRO Franchise Technicians thoroughly clean, disinfect and deodorize the structure.

Methamphetamine Labs: Many of the chemicals used in the production of illegal drugs such as methamphetamine are volatile and can leave harmful residues throughout a structure.  SERVPRO Franchise Professionals follow federal and state guidelines to properly clean all surfaces.

Crime Scene Residues: From fingerprint powder and evidence-gathering chemicals to tear gas and pepper spray residues, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals can clean and restore your property and contents.

Arson and Vandalism: SERVPRO Franchise Professionals are recognized as leaders at helping property owners recover quickly from fire and water damage. Your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional also provides general cleaning and deodorization services for situations resulting from vandalism including graffiti, egg, spoiled foods and human or animal waste.

Sewage Backup:  Sewage Backups and black water intrusions are more than nasty, smelly deposits – these damages also introduce harmful microorganisms into a structure.  SERVPRO Franchise Professions remove the sewage, contaminants and moisture, disinfecting as they clean.  SERVPRO Franchise Professionals help ensure the structure is properly cleaned, disinfected and deodorized.

Ceiling Collapse

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

When water damages happen they can present themselves in many different ways. Often times there are many different types of materials that get affected, requiring remediation. In this instance the water came from the floor above and caused severe damage to the room below.

As such, our crew must be prepared to address the various areas of damage in a logical order. Here we see contents affected by fallen drywall and saturated insulation which require additional removal.  Carpet and pad will also have to be addressed once the many contents are photographed, removed from the affected room and set aside for further evaluation by both the insured and insurance adjuster prior to disposal of anything. This is imperative to be certain that the insured gets the reimbursement pertaining to these items.

Potential Dangerous Situation

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Often times, as first responders to a water damage, we must be on guard to walk into a multitude of scenarios. We must remember to be very aware of any hazards that could cause danger to our crew members and the members of the household. Additionally, further damage could occur if proper measures aren’t taken.

In this picture we see water coming from through the floor joists from above. There are clearly exposed electrical wires that could cause problems if left unattended. Our crew members are trained to be on the lookout for various types of hazards and recommend other licensed trades when necessary. In this case we would cut power to the affected areas from the breaker box and perhaps recommend that a licensed electrician further evaluate the homes’ electrical system to ensure that no further damage will occur.

When Winter Weather Strikes... SERVPRO of Patchogue Fights Back!

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

FROZEN PIPES: A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. Your SERVPRO Franchise Professional is faster to any size disaster, bringing the latest equipment and training to help make your water damage “Like it never even happened.”

ICE DAMS: Ice dams can be a major problem during the winter season.  They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice.  When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof’s shingles and into the structure’s interior areas.  Your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional can help mitigate water damage caused by ice dams and help you get your structure back to preloss condition.

PUFFBACKS: A puffback is a messy furnace malfunction that occurs when an oil burner backfires, sending soot throughout your home or business. It can happen all at once, covering an interior in grimy soot, or a puffback can leak soot particles more gradually.  Equipped with training, tools and experience to quickly and efficiently clean and restore your home or business, your SERVPRO Franchise Professional will help make your puffback “Like it never even happened.”

FLU SEASON: Help prevent the spread of flue germs.  Homes and businesses can depend on their local SERVPRO Franchise Professional to clean and sanitize building materials, surfaces and contents following restoration industry standards, using professional cleaning products and EPA-registered cleaner and disinfectants.  SERVPRO Franchise Professionals are also trained and equipped to clean your HVAC and duct systems to help provide better air quality and help reduce the risk of circulating harmful contaminants.

With an unmatched national footprint of over 1,700 Franchises in North America, SERVPRO is faster to any size disaster and can be on-site within a few hours to help reduce the future damage water can cause.  We have the right equipment, procedures and training to help ensure the structure is dry the first time, saving you time and money.

Tips from FEMA for Preparing Your Home for a Hurricane

  • Cover all of your home’s windows with precut plywood or hurricane shutters to protect your window from high winds.
  • Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
  • Keep all trees and shrubs well-trimmed so they are more wind resistant.
  • Turn off utilities as instructed. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.
  • Turn off propane tanks.
  • Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purpose such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water.

Tips from FEMA for Preparing Your Business for a Hurricane

  • Carefully assess how your company functions, both internally and externally, to determine which staff, materials, procedures and equipment are absolutely necessary to keep the business operating.
  • Identify operations critical to survival and recovery.
  • Plan what you will do if your building is not accessible.
    • Consider if you can run the business from a different location or from your home.
    • Develop relationships with other companies to use their facilities in case a disaster makes your location unusable.

Mid Construction Commercial Water Damage

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

We Must Be Prepared For Anything!

Wow! This one was a challenge and time was of the essence! This Veterans Rehab Facility extension was under construction and the contractor had deadlines that had him sweating to get it done on time as it was and then the sprinkler line was accidentally hit and water was EVERYWHERE!

We were called in immediately and not only had to remediate the water damage but work in very crowded and messy conditions as it was an ongoing construction site. The space was in a bit of disarray prior to the water damage, so we worked hand in hand with their foreman to work throughout this very expansive space as efficiently as possible.

Our efforts enabled the contractor to stay on schedule with our help and at the end all parties were grateful that we were on their team!

Managing Mold

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

From the Ordinary….

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment.  In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified.  Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

To the Unhealthy….

Intrusion of water into your home or place of work can result in mold growth.  Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing, or equipment failures, long-standing leaks, and poor humidity control.  When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth.  If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply.

Take Precautions

SERVPRO Franchise Professionals handle water damages every day and know prompt action is required to prevent mold growth.  If there is an ongoing moisture problem in the building, be alert for:

  • The presence of visible mold.
  • Strong musty odors, which may indicate mold is present.
  • Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth.
  • Excessive humidity.

Control Moisture and Reduce Mold

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Be an Informed Resource

Molds are found in every environment, and mold spores reproduce rapidly when moisture is present.  An Institute of Medicine study found excessive dampness indoors encourages the growth of molds and other organisms, causing a public health problem.  The EPA advised that the potential health concerns from molds are an important reason to prevent moisture problems leading to mold growth.  It is especially important to clean up existing indoor mold growth to increase property appeal and retain its value.  If a property has experienced a water intrusion, your SERVPRO Franchise Professional can inspect the damage to see whether moisture has penetrated materials or is allowing mold growth.

Control Moisture and Reduce Mold

Should a damage event occur, timely response is the key to preventing further damage.  Act within the first 24-48 hours in order to discourage mold growth and travel.

  • Correct any water leaks or standing water.
  • Remove standing water under cooling coils or air handling units.
  • Properly maintain humidifiers, if used.
  • Replace wet or visibly moldy insulation materials.
  • Steam cleaning and other methods involving moisture should not be used on any kind of duct work.
  • Install a ventilation system.

We Are Trained Professionals

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

The process of mold remediation has several facets. Once a third party Mold Assessor or Licensed Industrial Hygienist has performed testing in order to get a true picture of the situation at hand, they create a written protocol. In some instances mold spores are not visibly present, yet the air quality can indicate an elevation.

As responsible remediators following proper guidelines, we must first contain the doorway to the work area, either with a zipper or in the case pictured, with a tri-flap of plastic. We also post signs to alert non-trained people that there is a mold project taking place, as our trained professionals dress in their personal protective equipment, including full suits, gloves and respirators in order to protect them throughout the project.

What is Containment

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Mold remediation services has a very wide range of scope of work that may be necessary. Depending on the level of elevated mold spores, certain jobs involve very extensive removal of building materials while others may just require detailed surface cleaning.

In any case, containment is one of the most important parts of performing such work. At the job site in this photo, the situation did not require much removal of materials, however, we needed to thoroughly clean while running air purifying machines. Here is a visual of two components. Once content items (furniture shown here) were cleaned, they were then wrapped in thick plastic sheeting and in addition, the windows and vents were covered as to keep the room contained. This ensures the best result for ridding the work environment of elevated levels of spores once we finish our various steps of remediation.

Remember, there are mold spores naturally occurring everywhere at all times, however, when elevated moisture is present it can cause the spores to propagate causing potential problems. Securing the buildings plumbing leaks or elevated moisture issues is key as to not have a re-occurrence.

We Are An IICRC Certified Team

Different Types of Smoke & Soot

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

What did it leave behind?

SERVPRO of Patchogue's first step at a fire scene is to address your concerns.  The second step is to pretest to see what type of fire has taken place.  Knowing the types of smoke and their behavior patterns are vital to proper restoration.

Did you know there are different types of smoke?

Wet Smoke: Plastics and Rubbers (low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary)

Dry Smoke: Paper and Wool (fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore the smoke rises)

Protein: Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire (Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor)

Fuel Oil Soot: Furnace Puff Back

Other Type: Tear gas, fingerprint powder, and fire extinguisher residue.

Pretesting determines the cleaning method, as well as what can be restored versus replaced. Pretesting also allows the SERVPRO Franchise Professional to focus on saving those precious items for you.  Isn’t that what really matters?

Destroy Odor with Deodoration

10/21/2018 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspections, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), SERVPRO of Patchogue provides specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage.  SERVPRO of Patchogue does not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; we see out and removed the source of the odor. Once the source is found, SERVPRO's own proprietary line of cleaning products is used to treat and prevent the odor from returning.  Any restorable item in affected areas will be professionally cleaned and deodorized, including furniture, draperies and upholstery, electronics, art, flooring, walls, ceilings, HVAC air ducts, and more.

Ask SERVPRO of Patchogue to explain the various deodorization methods available and which will work best for you.

If you or anyone you know suffer a fire damage or some other accident and require deodorization services, contact SERVPRO of Patchogue. Whether its fire, water, or mold damage, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we'll help make it :Like it never even happened."

Dryer Fires

10/21/2018 (Permalink)

The Importance of Cleaning Dryer Vents

According to FEMA, failure to clean home dryers causes 34% of home dryer fires. Home dryer fires cause $35 million in property loss and can even cause injury or death.

To reduce the risk of these fires happening in your or your friends home or business, SERVPRO of Patchogue can help clean dryer vents and ducts that may have lint buildup.

Other tips for keeping your dryer vents clean from National Fire Protection Agency include cleaning the lint filter before and after each load, and making sure the outdoor vent flap will open and is not restricted by snow, a birds nest, or potential other obstacles.

For more information on cleaning dryer vents contact SERVPRO of Patchogue today!

Do You Have Dirty Ducts?

10/21/2018 (Permalink)

Improve Your Indoors Air Quality With Duct Cleaning

Did you know your ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality? Inspecting the ductwork in your facility or home should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty Ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold, and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

A routine part of SERVPRO of Patchogue's service is inspecting the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life-span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may help save you money. Duct cleaning may not always be necessary. SERVPRO of Patchogue will insect your HVAC system and ductwork and make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This inspection can help you save money and provide peace of mind on the health of your HVAC system and ductwork.

In some circumstances, such as after a fire, smoke, or suspected mod growth, duct cleaning becomes an essential part of the cleanup process. In these cases, SERVPRO of Patchogue can often restore the HVAC system and ductwork to pre-damage condition.

If you have a fuel-burning furnace, stove, or fireplace, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends they be inspected for proper functioning and be services before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

The SERVPRO Duct Cleaning System is proven and cost-efficient. Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, SERVPRO of Patchogue uses a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.

  • The process begins by using patented equipment, including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct's shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.
  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from ducting to a 16-gallon container.
  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of the particles in the airstream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor or dirt.

Severe Weather Safety

10/17/2018 (Permalink)

Severe weather can happen any time, anywhere. Each year, Americans cope with an average of the following intense storms:

  • 10,000 severe thunderstorms
  • 5,000 floods or flash floods
  • 1,300 tornadoes
  • 2 land-falling deadly hurricanes

Approximately 98 percent of all presidentially declared disasters are weather related, leading to around 650 deaths per year and nearly $15 billion in damage. Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action, and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

Know Your Risk. The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you, your business, and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. Severe weather comes in many forms, and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

Take Action. Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business. Put together or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe space.

Be an Example. Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

Contact SERVPRO of Patchogue for more readiness tips and tools, including SERVPRO's Emergency READY Profile (ERP). Having an ERP in place for your facility can help minimize business interruption in the event of a disaster.

Hurricane Harvey

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

Stories From The Storm

Hurricane Harvey was an extremely destructive  Atlantic hurricane, which became the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005. In a four-day period, many areas received more than 40 inches of rain as the system meandered over eastern Texas.

SERVPRO's Disaster Recovery Team deployed to assist in the cleanup and recovery efforts, responding to losses across Southeast Texas including Houston, Port Arthur, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, Victoria, and Bryan/College Station.

The SERVPRO family not only responded to restoration needs, but also helped secure critical donations to help provide residents with access to necessary items like diapers (approx. 35,000!) and toiletries.

Harvey By The Numbers

  • With peak accumulation of 51.88 inches, Harvey is the wettest tropical hurricane on record in the contiguous United States.
  • Economic losses are preliminarily estimated at between $81 to $108 billion, with a large portion of the losses sustained by uninsured homeowners.
  • Following the storm, an estimated 550 storm crews were deployed, representing more than 240 SERVPRO Franchises. Those numbers, in addition to area Franchises, places more than 1,000 crews in storm-affected areas.  Crews traveled from as far as California, Washington, and New York.

Need to Know: Wireless Emergency Alerts

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) are free notifications delivered to your mobile devices as part of a public safety system provided by authorized government-alerting authorities. The alerts are designed to inform you of imminent threats to safety or missing persons alerts in your area (e.g., AMBER Alerts).  Government partners include local and state public safety agencies, FEMA, the FCC, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Weather Service. A WEA can be sent to your mobile device when you maybe in harms way, without downloading an app or subscribing to a service.  WEAs may be used to share extreme weather warnings, local emergencies requiring evacuation or immediate action, AMBER Alerts, and Presidential Alerts during national emergency.

A WEA will look like a text message.  The WEA message will typically show the type and time of the alert, any action you should take, and the agency issuing the alert.  The message will be no more than 90 characters.  Visit www.ctia.org/wea to learn more about Wireless Emergency Alerts.

Holiday Cooking Fire

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

November - when cooler temperatures arrive, the leaves change, and family-oriented get-togethers, like Thanksgiving, begin the holiday season.  While you are busy whipping up delicious dishes in the kitchen, it is also important to take time to remember safety.

Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home-fire-related injuries in the United States. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports "Cooking equipment was involved in almost half (48%) of all reported home fires...and tied with heating equipment or the second leading cause of home fire deaths."

You can help ensure your holiday planes don't go up in smoke, by taking a few precautions! SERVPRO of Patchogue wants you, your family, and your property to stay safe.  If you do experience a fire or water damage during the holidays, or any time of the year, we can make it "Like it never even happened."

The Behavior of Smoke

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

The damage to your property following a fire can often be complicated due to the unique behavior of smoke.  There are two different types of smoke- wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire.

SERVPRO of Patchogue is thoroughly trained in fire cleanup and restoration and know the different types of smoke and their behavior patterns.  Knowing this information is vital to proper restoration. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Patchogue will survey the loss to determine the extent of impact from fire, smoke, heat, and moisture on the building materials and contents. The soot will then be tested to find our what type of smoke damaged occurred. Pretesting determines the proper cleaning method and allows SERVPRO of Patchogue to focus on saving your precious items.

SERVPRO of Patchogue knows that smoke can penetrate various cavities within the structure, causing hidden damage and odor. Our knowledge of building systems help them investigate how far smoke damaged may have spread. The following are additional facts you may not know about smoke.

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Five Dangers of Deep Frying a Turkey

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

A deep-fried turkey: delicious, but worth it? If you've seen any of the numerous videos of turkey fryer explosions and fires online, you may have asked yourself this question before.  Running the risk of bodily injury or property damage is something to consider when menu planning this holiday season.

  1. Turkey fryers can easily tip over, spilling hot cooking oil over a large area.
  2. An overfilled cooking pot will cause cooking oil to spill when the turkey is put in, and a partially frozen turkey will causes cooking oil to splatter when put in the pit.
  3. Even a small amount of cooking oil spilling on a hot burner can cause a large fire.
  4. Without thermostat controls, deep fryers can overheat oil to the point of a standing fire.
  5. The sides of the cooking pot, lid, and pot handles can get dangerously hot.

Kitchen Cautions

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

Each November, families gather together to celebrate Thanksgiving by preparing a delicious feast, but if you don't practice safe cooking habits, your holiday could become hazardous very quickly.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries.  The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. It's important to be alert to prevent cooking fires.

  • Be on alert! If you are sleeping or have consumed alcohol don't use the stove or stovetop.
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.
  • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while the food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire - oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, curtains - away from the stovetop.

If you have a cooking fire, consider the following safety protocols to help keep you and your family safe.

  • Just get out! When yo leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
  • Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.
  • For an oven fire, turn of the heat and keep the door closed.
  • If you try to fight the fire, make sure everyone else is out and you have a clear path to get out.
  • Keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it has completely cooled.

SERVPRO of Patchogue wishes you a safe and happy holiday season!

Flood Facts & Tips

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river, or even in the desert - there is always potential for flood damage. Fema.gov reports in the last 5 years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods.  Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past does not mean you won't in the future. In fact, nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas, and even just one inch of flood damage in an average home can cost you up to 27,000.

According to the American Red Cross, floods cause more damage in the United States every year than other weather related disaster. The American Red Cross offers the following flood safety tips.

  • Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go the other way.  Six inches of swiftly moving water can knock you off your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go the other way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If a flood does strike your home of business, contact SERVPRO of Patchogue.  Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. The SERVPRO system is prepared to handle any sized disaster. When fire and water take control of your life, SERVPRO of Patchogue will help you take it back.

Generator Safety

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

If you have a generator on hand for power outages during sever weather, follow the safety tips below from the American Red Cross.

  • Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.
  • To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure, such as under a tarp held up by poles. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
  • Opening doors and windows or using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide buildup in the home. Although carbon monoxide cant be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death. Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to carbon monoxide. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately.
  • Install carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

You Can Be Ruined, or You Can Be Ready: with the help of technology

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Technology can now be a vital tool in preparing for emergencies or disasters, as well as during or after to stay informed of the situations and in communication with others. From common technology you already use on a day-to-day basis to taking a few extra steps to prepare, the following will help you be ready in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Store Information Online

There are many places to store important information securely online. Services like Google Drive and Dropbox offer a free way to store different types of files, from a Word document to images of important documents.  Ready.gov suggests saving an electronic version of insurance policies, identification documents, medical records, and information on your pets, if necessary.

Follow the News

Stay informed by following agencies such as FEMA, local news channels, and local government on Twitter for the most up-to-date information in a disaster situation. You can also alert first responders if a rescue is needed through Twitter.

Mark Yourself Safe

The American Red Cross offers a Safe & Well check-in site to list yourself as safe or find family and friends in situations where communication is difficult to establish.

Facebook also has a feature called Safety Check that is activated after natural disasters or a crisis.  You will receive a notification from Facebook if you 're located in the affected area at that time.

Get in Touch

Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in your phone and e-mail for communication with family, friends, business contacts, and others whom you may need to get in contact with before, during, or after a disaster.

Charge Up

Keep a portable charger in your car and home in case of an emergency. You may need to recharge this from time to time, but you can also buy solar-powered chargers as well.

Get an Emergency READY Profile

SERVPRO is proud to offer Emergency READY Profiles for free at ready.SERVPRO.com to help prepare you, your property, or your business for an emergency.

Worries of Winter Weather

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Winter weather can bring about more issues than just slippery roads and a sidewalk to shovel. If you live where temperatures sink below freezing level, you are also at risk for frozen pipes and ice dams, which can create a major disaster at your home or property.

Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is cause by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.

To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross:

  • Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
  • Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.
  • When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

Ice Dams

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof's shingles and into the structure's interior areas, as well as causing gutters and shingles to move or fall.

Icicles can be an initial sin of an ice dam, according to Travelers.com. To spot ice dams inside, "check for water stains or moisture in your attic or along exterior walls of your house. Water stains or moisture may be an indication that an ice dam has formed and water has penetrated the roof membrane."

Removing an ice dam as soon as it is found is vital to helping prevent damage to your property and can be done using heating cables, a roof shovel, or calcium chloride ice melter.

If winter weather causes water damage to you or your insured's property, SERVPRO of Patchogue is always a call away, 24/7, ready to restore to preloss condition.

The Science of Drying

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Did you know that there is actually a science behind the process of drying?  The knowledge of psychometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of Patchogue is trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages. If your business suffers a water damage, SERVPRO of Patchogue will:

  • Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
  • Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying property.
  • Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What exactly does "speed up Mother Nature" mean? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material-but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, nature usually takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out. For this reason, SERVPRO of Patchogue has been trained to use top-of-the-line equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more.

SERVPRO of Patchogue also uses state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.

The bottom line? SERVPRO of Patchogue has the right equipment and training to help make it, "Like it never even happened."

Carbon Monoxide: A Silent Cold-Weather Killer

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Carbon Monoxide is a gas you cannot see, taste, or smell. According to ready.gov, an average of 430 Americans die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Oftentimes, it is the result of faulty, improperly used, or vented consumer products like furnaces, water heaters, room heaters, and engine powered equipment, such a portable generators.

However, there are precautions you can take to help protect yourself, your family, and your employees from deadly carbon monoxide fumes.

Reduce the chance of carbon monoxide exposure in your workplace by performing regular maintenance on equipment and appliances that can produce carbon monoxide.  Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home, including all bedrooms.

Consider having all fuel-burning heating equipment and chimneys serviced annually by a professional. Use portable generators only in well-ventilated areas away from doors, windows, vents, and any other opening to prevent fumes from entering the home.

For additional carbon monoxide safety information, visit usfa.fema.gov or osha.gov.

Are You Winter Weather Ready?

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Are you prepared for the coming cold weather? Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home and business if you are not ready for it. From heavy rain and freezing temperatures to damaging winds, sleet, or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared and help take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before colder weather hits.

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage tot he property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Roofs, water pipes, and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of all debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves an other obstructions can cause a damming effect, which can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate floor hazards potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open, allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting off the water at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.
  • Ask SERVPRO of Patchogue about completing an Emergency READY Profile (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no-cost assessment to your facility and provides you with a plan to get back in business fast following a disaster.

What To Do Until Help Arrives

10/9/2018 (Permalink)

A fire can leave behind soot, smoke damage and a host of other problems. Ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting, and floors will often need a thorough professional cleaning. If your home or business suffers a fire, it is important to take the appropriate steps to prevent further damage until SERVPRO of Patchogue arrives. The following tips may reduce damage and increase chances of a successful restoration.

DO:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from embedding into upholstery and carpet
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or odd linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer/refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome kitchen/bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holing tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system

DON'T:

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting SERVPRO of Patchogue.
  • Don't attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting SERVPRO of Patchogue.
  • Do not attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV sets, radios, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • So not consume food or beverages that may have been stored close to the fire, heat or water, as them may be contaminated.
  • If ceiling is wet, do not turn on ceiling fans. Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.
  • Don't send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor.

According to The Mayo Clinic, "Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because because of a perceived need to save them. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of acute value, occurs." Many people with hoarding disorder do not find their habits to be a problem.

Hoarding items are often things others would throw away or look at as junk or garbage such as old newspapers, junk mail or packaging.

Hoarding can lead to homes filled with extreme clutter to full capacity from years of accumulation, making living conditions unsanitary and crowded. Bugs, fleas, rats and other vermin may be present, at which point an exterminator would need to be called. At times, hoarding may spread to outside the home as well, to storage facilities, or even the garage or yard.

SERVPRO of Patchogue encounters hoarding situations in several different ways. Often we are called in for a fire or water loss and find the hording situation when we arrive on-site. We will communicate with the insurance company regarding their contents coverage, and after approval, contents can be packed out and possibly cleaned, dried, and stored by SERVPRO of Patchogue, or relocate to a storage facility so work on the fire or water loss can begin.

Another way SERVPRO of Patchogue encounters hoarding situations is through calls from landlords, case workers, real estate agents, or family members, often after the death of a loved one.  In these situations, the crew will see if they should look for any items of importance while they clean the job.  Sometimes, family members will come and try to help the hoarder sort through their contents as well.

Each case is very different, and hoarding jobs are often sensitive situations, but SERVPRO of Patchogue I here to help make it "Like it never even happened." If you encounter a hoarding situation at one of your properties, or with your insureds, call SERVPRO of Patchogue today!

Smoke Alarms: Life Savers

9/5/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms save lives when properly installed and maintained, according to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA).

In homes, smoke alarms should be in every bedroom and on every level, including the basement. In office and commercial environments, check your state requirements or contact your local Fire Marshall to help ensure all codes are met.

Test smoke alarms monthly using the test button. Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries need the entire smoke alarm unit replaced every 10 years. Other alarms need batteries replaced every year, and the unit replaced every ten years. If the alarm chirps signaling low battery, take the proper steps to replace the unit or the batteries immediately. Never disable or remove the battery from an alarm.  Almost half of fires where smoke alarms were present but did not activate had missing batteries or disconnected batteries (NFPA).

In larger commercial facilities, hard wired or wireless smoke alarms offer benefits such as not needing to be tested as often and activating throughout the entire building if smoke is detected in just one area (NFPA).

If you need help installing, testing, or changing batteries in your smoke alarms, contact your local fire department, an electrician, or the American Red Cross.

Be sure your home or workplace has a fire emergency plan in place and conduct regular fire drills. For more information on emergency preparedness, contact SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 924-1801

Soot and Smoke Clean-up

9/4/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Patchogue will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Extreme Heat Safety Tips To Prepare Your Home

8/30/2018 (Permalink)

As summer approaches, it is time to consider safety precautions for extreme heat in the coming months. Heat affects all people but especially the young, elderly, sick and overweight. Urban area residents also have a greater chance of being affected than those who live in rural areas due to the heat island effect.

Here is how to prepare your home for extreme heat:

  • Install window air conditioner snugly, insulate if necessary.
  • Check air-conditioning ducts for proper insulation.
  • Install temporary window reflectors (for use between windows and drapes), such as aluminum foil-covered cardboard, to reflect heat back outside.
  • Weather-strip doors and sills to keep cool air in.
  • Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings or louvers. (Outdoor awning or louvers can have reduced heat from entering the house by up to 80 percent)
  • Keep storm windows up all year.

Destroy Odors with DEODORIZATION

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

The quicker we get there, the quicker you get cleaned up!

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard to reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

If you require deodorization services, contact us at 631-924-1801. Whether is it fire, cigarette smoke, pet odors, mold or decomposition, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we'll make it "Like it never even happened"

Emergency Water Damage Tips

8/7/2018 (Permalink)

Act fast to save your belongings.

These tips are for clean water situations only:

  • Shut off water source if possible
  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks under furniture legs
  • Hang furs and leather goods separately at room temperature
  • Remove Oriental or other colored rugs from wet carpeting
  • Do not use a regular vacuum to remove water
  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of areas where ceilings are sagging from retained water
  • Do not leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpeting

If you come across a situation in which you come across dirty water, you should not try to clean the water yourself.  You should call SERVPRO of Patchogue and have a professional help you out.

How to Safely Clean Mouse Droppings

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Leave it to the Professionals!

Mice are carriers of potentially diseases and bacteria. Areas of your home infested by mice will no doubt contain considerable amounts of urine, feces and saliva. Once all the mice have been removed and their continued entry prevented then it is important to clean up the mess. Mouse contamination inside cupboards, behind appliances or on top of counters can very be very dangerous stuff. It is essential that certain safety measures are observed.

Hantavirus is one of the greatest health concerns associated with mouse droppings. The virus lives inside mice feces and when disturbed can become airborne. Humans that inhale the disease are most at risk for transmission. During the cleaning process, every effort should be made to prevent stirring up harmful dusts.

GETTING STARTED

  • Begin by airing out the infected space. Open as many doors and windows as possible for at least 30 minutes to allow for proper ventilation. Remain out of the space during this time.
  • Be sure to wear proper safety equipment during cleanup. It is recommended to wear a full-face respirator with certified P100 filter cartridges. These can be purchased at safety supply stores. Disposable paper dust masks do not provide the same amount of protection and should not be used to clean up toxic messes. Non-absorbent or rubber gloves should also be worn.
  • To prevent hazardous particles from becoming airborne never sweep or vacuum mouse droppings.
  • Carefully soak all infected surfaces with commercial grade disinfectant. A mixture of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water can also be used.
  • Wipe up all droppings and nesting material using a paper towel and dispose of in well-sealed plastic bags. Place bags outside in a sealed container and put out for garbage collection. Be sure to dispose of gloves and towels as well.
  • Thoroughly wash hands and clothing in with soap and water.

CLEANING MOUSE DROPPINGS IN THE ATTIC

Mice that have found their way into a home will spend a great deal of time in the attic. The warm and darkness of attics makes it an ideal place for mice to hide and breed. Homeowners can often go years without knowing they have mice attic and shocked to discover just how much activity has been going on just above their heads.

With time, attic that is home to mice will begin show significant evidence. One quick look into the attic will reveal not only their tunnels through the insulation but also the thousands of droppings they have left behind. Mice scatter their droppings wherever they go, making it impossible to perform spot clean ups. In many cases, a full attic restoration is required.

Mouse droppings inside your attic are not only harmful to your health; they can also significantly hurt the value of your home. Documented mouse activity on home inspector’s report will not go unnoticed by potential buyers. To avoid this situation is may be necessary to remove and replace all contaminated insulation.

Fire and Smoke Damage Do's and Do Not's

6/11/2018 (Permalink)

Do:

  • Limit the movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open.
  • Clean soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances and protect with a light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Pour RV antifreeze into sinks, toilet bowls and tubs if heat is off during freezing season
  • Wash both sides of leaves on house plants
  • Change HVAC filter
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

Don’t:

  • Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting SERVPRO of Patchogue.

  • Attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV, Radio, phones, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.

  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. Wiring may be wet or damaged
  • Send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

Storm Preparedness

6/6/2018 (Permalink)

BEFORE THE STORM

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • Postpone outdoor activities.
  • Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

DURING THE STORM

  • Use your battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates from local officials.
  • Avoid contact with corded phones. Use a corded telephone only for emergencies. Cordless and cellular telephones are safe to use.
  • Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. Unplug appliances and other electrical items such as computers and turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
  • Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes, and do not do laundry. Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
  • Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.
  • Avoid natural lightning rods such as a tall, isolated tree in an open area.
  • Avoid hilltops, open fields, the beach or a boat on the water.
  • Take shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid isolated sheds or other small structures in open areas.
  • Avoid contact with anything metal—tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, golf carts, golf clubs, and bicycles.
  • If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle

AFTER THE STORM

  • Never drive through a flooded roadway.
  • Stay away from storm-damaged areas to keep from putting yourself at risk from the effects of severe thunderstorms.
  • Continue to listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or to local radio and television stations for updated information or instructions, as access to roads or some parts of the community may be blocked.
  • Help people who may require special assistance, such as infants, children and the elderly or those with access or functional needs.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.
  • Watch your animals closely. Keep them under your direct control.

When to Take Mold Precautions

6/1/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO professionals handle water damages every day and know prompt action is required to prevent mold growth.  Mold is more likely to spread when moisture has been affecting an environment for a long period of time.  If your property has sustained a recent water damage, it is vital to have water removed and the structure dried promptly.

If you have experienced an ongoing moisture problem in the building, it is important to be alert to the following factors:

*The presence of visible mold.

*Strong musty odors which may indicate mold is present.

*Any evidence of past moisture problems that might indicate previous mold growth.

* Excessive humidity.

These conditions may require the expertise of a qualified Indoor Air Quality/Environmental professional to inspect the building for mold growth and water damage problems.

Does Your New York Home Have A Mold Problem?

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

#SERVPROcleansmold #SERVPROofPatchoguemoldremediation

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

The weather was perfect this year, the street was lined four deep with smiling people, just a perfect way to kick off the holiday season!

54th Annual Patchogue Christmas Parade

11/22/2017 (Permalink)

One of the best times that SERVPRO of Patchogue has is when we participate in Patchogue's Annual Christmas Parade on Main Street. This event is a great way to show our support for the great town of Patchogue and is also a time to connect with the community. Hundreds of people come out to see all the floats that local vendors and businesses have put together with their staff.  Children are encouraged to bring their letters to Santa Claus, and families can also write a separate letter wishing holiday greetings to servicemen and women. This year we decided to decorate our Army truck that we use when handling large commercial losses. We decorated the truck with SERVPRO green Christmas lights and had Christmas music blasting from huge speakers that filled the streets with holiday cheer.  Our employees and their families stood in the back of the truck waving to all who came out to see the parade.  This event is always a great way to spend time in the town we love with the people we hold most dear to our hearts!  We have already started to think of bigger and better ways we can make the 55th Annual Christmas Parade the best it can be for all the patrons of Patchogue who gather every year to watch this event.

Fire Prevention at the Centereach Fire Department

Fun while learning about fire safety

October 8th thru the 14th is Fire Prevention Week. It is the perfect time to review and make an exit plan.

"Every second counts: Plan 2 ways out!”

*Draw a map of your home and/or business and mark two exits from each room and a path outside from each exit.

*Practice your fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day. Practice using different ways out each time.

*Teach children how to escape on their own in case an adult cannot help them.

*Make sure the number of your home and/or business is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.

*Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.

*Once you get outside, stay outside! Never go back inside a burning building.

Remember, Rich Delfino and his team at SERVPRO of Patchogue are always here to help.

Supporting Our Community

Congratulations!

It is with great pride that SERVPRO of Patchogue accepts this certificate in showing our support of the Civil Air Patrol. This is a terrific federally supported non-profit corporation that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force. It’s 3 key missions are emergency services, disaster relief operations and aerospace education for youth and the general public. Thank you to this organization for all you do in helping to support our communities in our great country!  It is wonderful to see today's youth involved and dedicated to such a program.

As an added source of pride our own Laura's son, Zachary, at 16 years old is an Airman Cadet with high aspirations and we are so proud of him! Yay Zac!  Thank you for all your community service, keep up the awesome work!

SERVPRO of Patchogue's Country Night for the Troops Fundraiser

4/17/2017 (Permalink)

On April 1st, 2017 we hosted our first  fundraiser for the United States Troops, and it was a huge success. We partnered with the USO in order to achieve the maximum amount of money possible.

For over 75 years, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization to serve the men and women in the U.S. military and their families, throughout their time in uniform. From the moment they join, throughout their assignments and deployments, and as they transition back into their communities, the USO is always by their side. The USO strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation. The USO is not part of the federal government. As a congressionally chartered, privately run organization, the USO relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities, and is powered by a family of volunteers to accomplish their mission of connection.

We raised over $10,000 for the United States troops and we had a great time doing it.  We are anxiously looking forward to hosting our second fundraiser in 2018!
