Ultrasonic Blind Cleaning

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

The fastest, easiest way to sanitize, deodorize and restore luster to your blinds!

Dust, pollution, nicotine, and other contaminants dull the look of your blinds and form a layer of unhealthy dirt.  Dusting creates static electricity that attracts dust and dirt.  Scrubbing is tiresome, ineffective, and can actually damage blinds.

Ultrasonics. The only way to clean blinds.

SAFE. Ultrasonics is a revolutionary cleaning method that uses a hot water bath, specially formulated cleaning solutions, and sound waves to gently clean blinds without scrubbing or abrasives.

EFFECTIVE.  Ultrasonics removes all dirt, dust, grease, grime, nicotine, soot, pollen, pollution, and other contaminates.  Vanes, head rails, ladders, and cords- even the working mechanisms you don’t see are thoroughly cleaned, lubricated, and brightened! Ultrasonics gives you cleaner, healthier, brighter blinds, even if you have years of dried on dirt.

ECONOMICAL. Ultrasonic cleaning is inexpensive, and minor compared to replacing blinds or using any other cleaning method.

CONVENIENT. Take down your own blinds and save! Bring in your blinds, or for a minimal charge, we will take them down for you.

Being Aware of What To Look For!

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

In this photo which is from a residence that incurred a water damage, our technicians always need to know what types of materials are damaged. Here we can see drywall, paneling, concrete, wood studs and plywood, all soaked from the broken pipe.

We follow proper protocol to understand what materials should be cut out due to greater potential for mold growth (also contingent upon the length of time from the water damage and time when we get called in and arrive on site) versus what materials can be dried in place and salvaged.

Of course each situation is unique and protocol can change based on a variety of factors. This is why at SERVPRO of Patchogue we make sure that our technicians are properly trained to be ready for any situation.

Sewage Back-Up

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

Biohazard Sewage Back-Up sewage back-up in basement

Yuck! What’s THAT???!

Well, we never said it was a glamorous job! Sometimes when we are called into situations, we are not even exactly sure of what we are getting ourselves into. Biohazard conditions can present themselves in many ways. This was called in as a water damage, however, upon arrival it was clear that it was not quite that simple. Both the visual inspection and odor presented indicated that there was sewage contamination as well.

For the sake of the inhabitants of the home, as well as our crew members, extra precautions were necessary to ensure that we leave this space free of any contaminants that could be harmful. Proper personal protective equipment including suits, rubber boots, and gloves and respirators were imperative for our staff and the proper disinfectants ensured that we left the home safe for rebuilding.

  • Mold Mitigation and Remediation

Fragile Situations

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

As professional restorers we must face situations that are often times very difficult and emotional for the party for which we are doing the work.  We must also be aware that it can affect our staff members as well and be prepared to deal with this element accordingly.

In some instances we must report to jobs in which a homeowner has passed on and perhaps it goes unknown for a period of time for a variety of reasons.  This requires that we have our crew members don full personal protective equipment as these circumstances are considered to be biohazards due to the nature of the work to be performed. In these instances, working proficiently and timely is of utmost importance so that the insured can begin the rebuilding process, both physically and emotionally. It is no doubt the most difficult aspect of our work.

What are "SDS" Sheets?

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

Safety data sheet (SDS), material safety data sheet (MSDS), or product safety data sheet (PSDS) are all terms used to describe specific papers written about all cleaning products and chemicals that we may use at a home or business and these products vary based on what type of situation we are addressing.

As responsible remediators, we must be prepared to provide information to our clients. This is especially the case where either inhabitants have compromised immune systems or allergic sensitivities or when we are working in a commercial environment and business owners must be prepared to answer employee concerns.

Our crews are all equipped with binders including the SDS sheets for any products that will be used on the job so that if the customer has any questions we can answer them quickly and informatively.

Types of Biohazards

11/11/2018 (Permalink)

Bloodborne Pathogens: SERVPRO Franchise Professionals remove and dispose of bodily fluids, tissue and other potentially pathogenic substances resulting from accident, trauma, crime or death.  Trained SERVPRO Franchise Technicians thoroughly clean, disinfect and deodorize the structure.

Methamphetamine Labs: Many of the chemicals used in the production of illegal drugs such as methamphetamine are volatile and can leave harmful residues throughout a structure.  SERVPRO Franchise Professionals follow federal and state guidelines to properly clean all surfaces.

Crime Scene Residues: From fingerprint powder and evidence-gathering chemicals to tear gas and pepper spray residues, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals can clean and restore your property and contents.

Arson and Vandalism: SERVPRO Franchise Professionals are recognized as leaders at helping property owners recover quickly from fire and water damage. Your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional also provides general cleaning and deodorization services for situations resulting from vandalism including graffiti, egg, spoiled foods and human or animal waste.

Sewage Backup:  Sewage Backups and black water intrusions are more than nasty, smelly deposits – these damages also introduce harmful microorganisms into a structure.  SERVPRO Franchise Professions remove the sewage, contaminants and moisture, disinfecting as they clean.  SERVPRO Franchise Professionals help ensure the structure is properly cleaned, disinfected and deodorized.

Ceiling Collapse

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

When water damages happen they can present themselves in many different ways. Often times there are many different types of materials that get affected, requiring remediation. In this instance the water came from the floor above and caused severe damage to the room below.

As such, our crew must be prepared to address the various areas of damage in a logical order. Here we see contents affected by fallen drywall and saturated insulation which require additional removal.  Carpet and pad will also have to be addressed once the many contents are photographed, removed from the affected room and set aside for further evaluation by both the insured and insurance adjuster prior to disposal of anything. This is imperative to be certain that the insured gets the reimbursement pertaining to these items.

Potential Dangerous Situation

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Often times, as first responders to a water damage, we must be on guard to walk into a multitude of scenarios. We must remember to be very aware of any hazards that could cause danger to our crew members and the members of the household. Additionally, further damage could occur if proper measures aren’t taken.

In this picture we see water coming from through the floor joists from above. There are clearly exposed electrical wires that could cause problems if left unattended. Our crew members are trained to be on the lookout for various types of hazards and recommend other licensed trades when necessary. In this case we would cut power to the affected areas from the breaker box and perhaps recommend that a licensed electrician further evaluate the homes’ electrical system to ensure that no further damage will occur.

When Winter Weather Strikes... SERVPRO of Patchogue Fights Back!

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

FROZEN PIPES: A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. Your SERVPRO Franchise Professional is faster to any size disaster, bringing the latest equipment and training to help make your water damage “Like it never even happened.”

ICE DAMS: Ice dams can be a major problem during the winter season.  They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice.  When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof’s shingles and into the structure’s interior areas.  Your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional can help mitigate water damage caused by ice dams and help you get your structure back to preloss condition.

PUFFBACKS: A puffback is a messy furnace malfunction that occurs when an oil burner backfires, sending soot throughout your home or business. It can happen all at once, covering an interior in grimy soot, or a puffback can leak soot particles more gradually.  Equipped with training, tools and experience to quickly and efficiently clean and restore your home or business, your SERVPRO Franchise Professional will help make your puffback “Like it never even happened.”

FLU SEASON: Help prevent the spread of flue germs.  Homes and businesses can depend on their local SERVPRO Franchise Professional to clean and sanitize building materials, surfaces and contents following restoration industry standards, using professional cleaning products and EPA-registered cleaner and disinfectants.  SERVPRO Franchise Professionals are also trained and equipped to clean your HVAC and duct systems to help provide better air quality and help reduce the risk of circulating harmful contaminants.

With an unmatched national footprint of over 1,700 Franchises in North America, SERVPRO is faster to any size disaster and can be on-site within a few hours to help reduce the future damage water can cause.  We have the right equipment, procedures and training to help ensure the structure is dry the first time, saving you time and money.

Tips from FEMA for Preparing Your Home for a Hurricane

  • Cover all of your home’s windows with precut plywood or hurricane shutters to protect your window from high winds.
  • Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
  • Keep all trees and shrubs well-trimmed so they are more wind resistant.
  • Turn off utilities as instructed. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.
  • Turn off propane tanks.
  • Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purpose such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water.

Tips from FEMA for Preparing Your Business for a Hurricane

  • Carefully assess how your company functions, both internally and externally, to determine which staff, materials, procedures and equipment are absolutely necessary to keep the business operating.
  • Identify operations critical to survival and recovery.
  • Plan what you will do if your building is not accessible.
    • Consider if you can run the business from a different location or from your home.
    • Develop relationships with other companies to use their facilities in case a disaster makes your location unusable.

Mid Construction Commercial Water Damage

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

We Must Be Prepared For Anything!

Wow! This one was a challenge and time was of the essence! This Veterans Rehab Facility extension was under construction and the contractor had deadlines that had him sweating to get it done on time as it was and then the sprinkler line was accidentally hit and water was EVERYWHERE!

We were called in immediately and not only had to remediate the water damage but work in very crowded and messy conditions as it was an ongoing construction site. The space was in a bit of disarray prior to the water damage, so we worked hand in hand with their foreman to work throughout this very expansive space as efficiently as possible.

Our efforts enabled the contractor to stay on schedule with our help and at the end all parties were grateful that we were on their team!

Managing Mold

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

From the Ordinary….

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment.  In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified.  Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

To the Unhealthy….

Intrusion of water into your home or place of work can result in mold growth.  Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing, or equipment failures, long-standing leaks, and poor humidity control.  When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth.  If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply.

Take Precautions

SERVPRO Franchise Professionals handle water damages every day and know prompt action is required to prevent mold growth.  If there is an ongoing moisture problem in the building, be alert for:

  • The presence of visible mold.
  • Strong musty odors, which may indicate mold is present.
  • Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth.
  • Excessive humidity.

Control Moisture and Reduce Mold

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Be an Informed Resource

Molds are found in every environment, and mold spores reproduce rapidly when moisture is present.  An Institute of Medicine study found excessive dampness indoors encourages the growth of molds and other organisms, causing a public health problem.  The EPA advised that the potential health concerns from molds are an important reason to prevent moisture problems leading to mold growth.  It is especially important to clean up existing indoor mold growth to increase property appeal and retain its value.  If a property has experienced a water intrusion, your SERVPRO Franchise Professional can inspect the damage to see whether moisture has penetrated materials or is allowing mold growth.

Control Moisture and Reduce Mold

Should a damage event occur, timely response is the key to preventing further damage.  Act within the first 24-48 hours in order to discourage mold growth and travel.

  • Correct any water leaks or standing water.
  • Remove standing water under cooling coils or air handling units.
  • Properly maintain humidifiers, if used.
  • Replace wet or visibly moldy insulation materials.
  • Steam cleaning and other methods involving moisture should not be used on any kind of duct work.
  • Install a ventilation system.

We Are Trained Professionals

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

The process of mold remediation has several facets. Once a third party Mold Assessor or Licensed Industrial Hygienist has performed testing in order to get a true picture of the situation at hand, they create a written protocol. In some instances mold spores are not visibly present, yet the air quality can indicate an elevation.

As responsible remediators following proper guidelines, we must first contain the doorway to the work area, either with a zipper or in the case pictured, with a tri-flap of plastic. We also post signs to alert non-trained people that there is a mold project taking place, as our trained professionals dress in their personal protective equipment, including full suits, gloves and respirators in order to protect them throughout the project.

What is Containment

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Mold remediation services has a very wide range of scope of work that may be necessary. Depending on the level of elevated mold spores, certain jobs involve very extensive removal of building materials while others may just require detailed surface cleaning.

In any case, containment is one of the most important parts of performing such work. At the job site in this photo, the situation did not require much removal of materials, however, we needed to thoroughly clean while running air purifying machines. Here is a visual of two components. Once content items (furniture shown here) were cleaned, they were then wrapped in thick plastic sheeting and in addition, the windows and vents were covered as to keep the room contained. This ensures the best result for ridding the work environment of elevated levels of spores once we finish our various steps of remediation.

Remember, there are mold spores naturally occurring everywhere at all times, however, when elevated moisture is present it can cause the spores to propagate causing potential problems. Securing the buildings plumbing leaks or elevated moisture issues is key as to not have a re-occurrence.

We Are An IICRC Certified Team

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies. IICRC Certified Firms have the right to display the IICRC Certified Logo.

Different Types of Smoke & Soot

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

What did it leave behind?

SERVPRO of Patchogue's first step at a fire scene is to address your concerns.  The second step is to pretest to see what type of fire has taken place.  Knowing the types of smoke and their behavior patterns are vital to proper restoration.

Did you know there are different types of smoke?

Wet Smoke: Plastics and Rubbers (low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary)

Dry Smoke: Paper and Wool (fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore the smoke rises)

Protein: Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire (Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor)

Fuel Oil Soot: Furnace Puff Back

Other Type: Tear gas, fingerprint powder, and fire extinguisher residue.

Pretesting determines the cleaning method, as well as what can be restored versus replaced. Pretesting also allows the SERVPRO Franchise Professional to focus on saving those precious items for you.  Isn’t that what really matters?

Destroy Odor with Deodoration

10/21/2018 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspections, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), SERVPRO of Patchogue provides specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage.  SERVPRO of Patchogue does not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; we see out and removed the source of the odor. Once the source is found, SERVPRO's own proprietary line of cleaning products is used to treat and prevent the odor from returning.  Any restorable item in affected areas will be professionally cleaned and deodorized, including furniture, draperies and upholstery, electronics, art, flooring, walls, ceilings, HVAC air ducts, and more.

Ask SERVPRO of Patchogue to explain the various deodorization methods available and which will work best for you.

If you or anyone you know suffer a fire damage or some other accident and require deodorization services, contact SERVPRO of Patchogue. Whether its fire, water, or mold damage, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we'll help make it :Like it never even happened."

Dryer Fires

10/21/2018 (Permalink)

The Importance of Cleaning Dryer Vents

According to FEMA, failure to clean home dryers causes 34% of home dryer fires. Home dryer fires cause $35 million in property loss and can even cause injury or death.

To reduce the risk of these fires happening in your or your friends home or business, SERVPRO of Patchogue can help clean dryer vents and ducts that may have lint buildup.

Other tips for keeping your dryer vents clean from National Fire Protection Agency include cleaning the lint filter before and after each load, and making sure the outdoor vent flap will open and is not restricted by snow, a birds nest, or potential other obstacles.

For more information on cleaning dryer vents contact SERVPRO of Patchogue today!

10/21/2018 (Permalink)

Improve Your Indoors Air Quality With Duct Cleaning

Did you know your ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality? Inspecting the ductwork in your facility or home should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty Ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold, and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

A routine part of SERVPRO of Patchogue's service is inspecting the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life-span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may help save you money. Duct cleaning may not always be necessary. SERVPRO of Patchogue will insect your HVAC system and ductwork and make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This inspection can help you save money and provide peace of mind on the health of your HVAC system and ductwork.

In some circumstances, such as after a fire, smoke, or suspected mod growth, duct cleaning becomes an essential part of the cleanup process. In these cases, SERVPRO of Patchogue can often restore the HVAC system and ductwork to pre-damage condition.

If you have a fuel-burning furnace, stove, or fireplace, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends they be inspected for proper functioning and be services before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

The SERVPRO Duct Cleaning System is proven and cost-efficient. Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, SERVPRO of Patchogue uses a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.

  • The process begins by using patented equipment, including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct's shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.
  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from ducting to a 16-gallon container.
  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of the particles in the airstream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor or dirt.

Severe Weather Safety

10/17/2018 (Permalink)

Severe weather can happen any time, anywhere. Each year, Americans cope with an average of the following intense storms:

  • 10,000 severe thunderstorms
  • 5,000 floods or flash floods
  • 1,300 tornadoes
  • 2 land-falling deadly hurricanes

Approximately 98 percent of all presidentially declared disasters are weather related, leading to around 650 deaths per year and nearly $15 billion in damage. Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action, and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

Know Your Risk. The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you, your business, and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. Severe weather comes in many forms, and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

Take Action. Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business. Put together or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe space.

Be an Example. Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

Contact SERVPRO of Patchogue for more readiness tips and tools, including SERVPRO's Emergency READY Profile (ERP). Having an ERP in place for your facility can help minimize business interruption in the event of a disaster.

Hurricane Harvey

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

Stories From The Storm

Hurricane Harvey was an extremely destructive  Atlantic hurricane, which became the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005. In a four-day period, many areas received more than 40 inches of rain as the system meandered over eastern Texas.

SERVPRO's Disaster Recovery Team deployed to assist in the cleanup and recovery efforts, responding to losses across Southeast Texas including Houston, Port Arthur, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, Victoria, and Bryan/College Station.

The SERVPRO family not only responded to restoration needs, but also helped secure critical donations to help provide residents with access to necessary items like diapers (approx. 35,000!) and toiletries.

Harvey By The Numbers

  • With peak accumulation of 51.88 inches, Harvey is the wettest tropical hurricane on record in the contiguous United States.
  • Economic losses are preliminarily estimated at between $81 to $108 billion, with a large portion of the losses sustained by uninsured homeowners.
  • Following the storm, an estimated 550 storm crews were deployed, representing more than 240 SERVPRO Franchises. Those numbers, in addition to area Franchises, places more than 1,000 crews in storm-affected areas.  Crews traveled from as far as California, Washington, and New York.

Need to Know: Wireless Emergency Alerts

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) are free notifications delivered to your mobile devices as part of a public safety system provided by authorized government-alerting authorities. The alerts are designed to inform you of imminent threats to safety or missing persons alerts in your area (e.g., AMBER Alerts).  Government partners include local and state public safety agencies, FEMA, the FCC, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Weather Service. A WEA can be sent to your mobile device when you maybe in harms way, without downloading an app or subscribing to a service.  WEAs may be used to share extreme weather warnings, local emergencies requiring evacuation or immediate action, AMBER Alerts, and Presidential Alerts during national emergency.

A WEA will look like a text message.  The WEA message will typically show the type and time of the alert, any action you should take, and the agency issuing the alert.  The message will be no more than 90 characters.  Visit www.ctia.org/wea to learn more about Wireless Emergency Alerts.

Holiday Cooking Fire

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

November - when cooler temperatures arrive, the leaves change, and family-oriented get-togethers, like Thanksgiving, begin the holiday season.  While you are busy whipping up delicious dishes in the kitchen, it is also important to take time to remember safety.

Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home-fire-related injuries in the United States. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports "Cooking equipment was involved in almost half (48%) of all reported home fires...and tied with heating equipment or the second leading cause of home fire deaths."

You can help ensure your holiday planes don't go up in smoke, by taking a few precautions! SERVPRO of Patchogue wants you, your family, and your property to stay safe.  If you do experience a fire or water damage during the holidays, or any time of the year, we can make it "Like it never even happened."

The Behavior of Smoke

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

The damage to your property following a fire can often be complicated due to the unique behavior of smoke.  There are two different types of smoke- wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire.

SERVPRO of Patchogue is thoroughly trained in fire cleanup and restoration and know the different types of smoke and their behavior patterns.  Knowing this information is vital to proper restoration. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Patchogue will survey the loss to determine the extent of impact from fire, smoke, heat, and moisture on the building materials and contents. The soot will then be tested to find our what type of smoke damaged occurred. Pretesting determines the proper cleaning method and allows SERVPRO of Patchogue to focus on saving your precious items.

SERVPRO of Patchogue knows that smoke can penetrate various cavities within the structure, causing hidden damage and odor. Our knowledge of building systems help them investigate how far smoke damaged may have spread. The following are additional facts you may not know about smoke.

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Five Dangers of Deep Frying a Turkey

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

A deep-fried turkey: delicious, but worth it? If you've seen any of the numerous videos of turkey fryer explosions and fires online, you may have asked yourself this question before.  Running the risk of bodily injury or property damage is something to consider when menu planning this holiday season.

  1. Turkey fryers can easily tip over, spilling hot cooking oil over a large area.
  2. An overfilled cooking pot will cause cooking oil to spill when the turkey is put in, and a partially frozen turkey will causes cooking oil to splatter when put in the pit.
  3. Even a small amount of cooking oil spilling on a hot burner can cause a large fire.
  4. Without thermostat controls, deep fryers can overheat oil to the point of a standing fire.
  5. The sides of the cooking pot, lid, and pot handles can get dangerously hot.

Kitchen Cautions

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

Each November, families gather together to celebrate Thanksgiving by preparing a delicious feast, but if you don't practice safe cooking habits, your holiday could become hazardous very quickly.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries.  The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. It's important to be alert to prevent cooking fires.

  • Be on alert! If you are sleeping or have consumed alcohol don't use the stove or stovetop.
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.
  • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while the food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire - oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, curtains - away from the stovetop.

If you have a cooking fire, consider the following safety protocols to help keep you and your family safe.

  • Just get out! When yo leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
  • Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.
  • For an oven fire, turn of the heat and keep the door closed.
  • If you try to fight the fire, make sure everyone else is out and you have a clear path to get out.
  • Keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it has completely cooled.

SERVPRO of Patchogue wishes you a safe and happy holiday season!

Flood Facts & Tips

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river, or even in the desert - there is always potential for flood damage. Fema.gov reports in the last 5 years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods.  Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past does not mean you won't in the future. In fact, nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas, and even just one inch of flood damage in an average home can cost you up to 27,000.

According to the American Red Cross, floods cause more damage in the United States every year than other weather related disaster. The American Red Cross offers the following flood safety tips.

  • Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go the other way.  Six inches of swiftly moving water can knock you off your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go the other way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If a flood does strike your home of business, contact SERVPRO of Patchogue.  Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. The SERVPRO system is prepared to handle any sized disaster. When fire and water take control of your life, SERVPRO of Patchogue will help you take it back.

Generator Safety

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

If you have a generator on hand for power outages during sever weather, follow the safety tips below from the American Red Cross.

  • Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.
  • To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure, such as under a tarp held up by poles. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
  • Opening doors and windows or using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide buildup in the home. Although carbon monoxide cant be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death. Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to carbon monoxide. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately.
  • Install carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

You Can Be Ruined, or You Can Be Ready: with the help of technology

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Technology can now be a vital tool in preparing for emergencies or disasters, as well as during or after to stay informed of the situations and in communication with others. From common technology you already use on a day-to-day basis to taking a few extra steps to prepare, the following will help you be ready in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Store Information Online

There are many places to store important information securely online. Services like Google Drive and Dropbox offer a free way to store different types of files, from a Word document to images of important documents.  Ready.gov suggests saving an electronic version of insurance policies, identification documents, medical records, and information on your pets, if necessary.

Facebook also has a feature called Safety Check that is activated after natural disasters or a crisis.  You will receive a notification from Facebook if you 're located in the affected area at that time.

Get in Touch

Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in your phone and e-mail for communication with family, friends, business contacts, and others whom you may need to get in contact with before, during, or after a disaster.

Charge Up

Keep a portable charger in your car and home in case of an emergency. You may need to recharge this from time to time, but you can also buy solar-powered chargers as well.

Get an Emergency READY Profile

SERVPRO is proud to offer Emergency READY Profiles for free at ready.SERVPRO.com to help prepare you, your property, or your business for an emergency.

Worries of Winter Weather

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Winter weather can bring about more issues than just slippery roads and a sidewalk to shovel. If you live where temperatures sink below freezing level, you are also at risk for frozen pipes and ice dams, which can create a major disaster at your home or property.

Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is cause by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.

To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross:

  • Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
  • Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.
  • When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

Ice Dams

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof's shingles and into the structure's interior areas, as well as causing gutters and shingles to move or fall.

Icicles can be an initial sin of an ice dam, according to Travelers.com. To spot ice dams inside, "check for water stains or moisture in your attic or along exterior walls of your house. Water stains or moisture may be an indication that an ice dam has formed and water has penetrated the roof membrane."

Removing an ice dam as soon as it is found is vital to helping prevent damage to your property and can be done using heating cables, a roof shovel, or calcium chloride ice melter.

If winter weather causes water damage to you or your insured's property, SERVPRO of Patchogue is always a call away, 24/7, ready to restore to preloss condition.

The Science of Drying

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Did you know that there is actually a science behind the process of drying?  The knowledge of psychometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of Patchogue is trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages. If your business suffers a water damage, SERVPRO of Patchogue will:

  • Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
  • Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying property.
  • Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What exactly does "speed up Mother Nature" mean? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material-but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, nature usually takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out. For this reason, SERVPRO of Patchogue has been trained to use top-of-the-line equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more.

SERVPRO of Patchogue also uses state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.

The bottom line? SERVPRO of Patchogue has the right equipment and training to help make it, "Like it never even happened."

Carbon Monoxide: A Silent Cold-Weather Killer

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Carbon Monoxide is a gas you cannot see, taste, or smell. According to ready.gov, an average of 430 Americans die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Oftentimes, it is the result of faulty, improperly used, or vented consumer products like furnaces, water heaters, room heaters, and engine powered equipment, such a portable generators.

However, there are precautions you can take to help protect yourself, your family, and your employees from deadly carbon monoxide fumes.

Reduce the chance of carbon monoxide exposure in your workplace by performing regular maintenance on equipment and appliances that can produce carbon monoxide.  Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home, including all bedrooms.

Consider having all fuel-burning heating equipment and chimneys serviced annually by a professional. Use portable generators only in well-ventilated areas away from doors, windows, vents, and any other opening to prevent fumes from entering the home.

For additional carbon monoxide safety information, visit usfa.fema.gov or osha.gov.

Are You Winter Weather Ready?

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Are you prepared for the coming cold weather? Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home and business if you are not ready for it. From heavy rain and freezing temperatures to damaging winds, sleet, or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared and help take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before colder weather hits.

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage tot he property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Roofs, water pipes, and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of all debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves an other obstructions can cause a damming effect, which can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate floor hazards potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open, allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting off the water at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.
  • Ask SERVPRO of Patchogue about completing an Emergency READY Profile (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no-cost assessment to your facility and provides you with a plan to get back in business fast following a disaster.

What To Do Until Help Arrives

10/9/2018 (Permalink)

A fire can leave behind soot, smoke damage and a host of other problems. Ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting, and floors will often need a thorough professional cleaning. If your home or business suffers a fire, it is important to take the appropriate steps to prevent further damage until SERVPRO of Patchogue arrives. The following tips may reduce damage and increase chances of a successful restoration.

DO:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from embedding into upholstery and carpet
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or odd linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer/refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome kitchen/bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holing tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system

DON'T:

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting SERVPRO of Patchogue.
  • Don't attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting SERVPRO of Patchogue.
  • Do not attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV sets, radios, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • So not consume food or beverages that may have been stored close to the fire, heat or water, as them may be contaminated.
  • If ceiling is wet, do not turn on ceiling fans. Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.
  • Don't send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor.

Hoarding: A Serious Situation

9/5/2018 (Permalink)

According to The Mayo Clinic, "Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because because of a perceived need to save them. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of acute value, occurs." Many people with hoarding disorder do not find their habits to be a problem.

Hoarding items are often things others would throw away or look at as junk or garbage such as old newspapers, junk mail or packaging.

Hoarding can lead to homes filled with extreme clutter to full capacity from years of accumulation, making living conditions unsanitary and crowded. Bugs, fleas, rats and other vermin may be present, at which point an exterminator would need to be called. At times, hoarding may spread to outside the home as well, to storage facilities, or even the garage or yard.

SERVPRO of Patchogue encounters hoarding situations in several different ways. Often we are called in for a fire or water loss and find the hording situation when we arrive on-site. We will communicate with the insurance company regarding their contents coverage, and after approval, contents can be packed out and possibly cleaned, dried, and stored by SERVPRO of Patchogue, or relocate to a storage facility so work on the fire or water loss can begin.

Another way SERVPRO of Patchogue encounters hoarding situations is through calls from landlords, case workers, real estate agents, or family members, often after the death of a loved one.  In these situations, the crew will see if they should look for any items of importance while they clean the job.  Sometimes, family members will come and try to help the hoarder sort through their contents as well.

Each case is very different, and hoarding jobs are often sensitive situations, but SERVPRO of Patchogue I here to help make it "Like it never even happened." If you encounter a hoarding situation at one of your properties, or with your insureds, call SERVPRO of Patchogue today!

On this day and everyday, SERVPRO of Patchogue salutes those heroes who arrive in the greatest time of need and stand strong in the face of disaster. These heroes are the First Responders who keep our communities safe in trying times.

Smoke Alarms: Life Savers

9/5/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms save lives when properly installed and maintained, according to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA).

In homes, smoke alarms should be in every bedroom and on every level, including the basement. In office and commercial environments, check your state requirements or contact your local Fire Marshall to help ensure all codes are met.

Test smoke alarms monthly using the test button. Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries need the entire smoke alarm unit replaced every 10 years. Other alarms need batteries replaced every year, and the unit replaced every ten years. If the alarm chirps signaling low battery, take the proper steps to replace the unit or the batteries immediately. Never disable or remove the battery from an alarm.  Almost half of fires where smoke alarms were present but did not activate had missing batteries or disconnected batteries (NFPA).

In larger commercial facilities, hard wired or wireless smoke alarms offer benefits such as not needing to be tested as often and activating throughout the entire building if smoke is detected in just one area (NFPA).

If you need help installing, testing, or changing batteries in your smoke alarms, contact your local fire department, an electrician, or the American Red Cross.

Be sure your home or workplace has a fire emergency plan in place and conduct regular fire drills. For more information on emergency preparedness, contact SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 924-1801

Soot and Smoke Clean-up

9/4/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Patchogue will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Extreme Heat Safety Tips To Prepare Your Home

8/30/2018 (Permalink)

As summer approaches, it is time to consider safety precautions for extreme heat in the coming months. Heat affects all people but especially the young, elderly, sick and overweight. Urban area residents also have a greater chance of being affected than those who live in rural areas due to the heat island effect.

Here is how to prepare your home for extreme heat:

  • Install window air conditioner snugly, insulate if necessary.
  • Check air-conditioning ducts for proper insulation.
  • Install temporary window reflectors (for use between windows and drapes), such as aluminum foil-covered cardboard, to reflect heat back outside.
  • Weather-strip doors and sills to keep cool air in.
  • Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings or louvers. (Outdoor awning or louvers can have reduced heat from entering the house by up to 80 percent)
  • Keep storm windows up all year.

Destroy Odors with DEODORIZATION

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Destroy Odors with DEODORIZATION The quicker we get there, the quicker you get cleaned up!

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard to reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

If you require deodorization services, contact us at 631-924-1801. Whether is it fire, cigarette smoke, pet odors, mold or decomposition, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we'll make it "Like it never even happened"

How to Safely Clean Mouse Droppings

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Biohazard How to Safely Clean Mouse Droppings Leave it to the Professionals!

Mice are carriers of potentially diseases and bacteria. Areas of your home infested by mice will no doubt contain considerable amounts of urine, feces and saliva. Once all the mice have been removed and their continued entry prevented then it is important to clean up the mess. Mouse contamination inside cupboards, behind appliances or on top of counters can very be very dangerous stuff. It is essential that certain safety measures are observed.

Hantavirus is one of the greatest health concerns associated with mouse droppings. The virus lives inside mice feces and when disturbed can become airborne. Humans that inhale the disease are most at risk for transmission. During the cleaning process, every effort should be made to prevent stirring up harmful dusts.

GETTING STARTED

  • Begin by airing out the infected space. Open as many doors and windows as possible for at least 30 minutes to allow for proper ventilation. Remain out of the space during this time.
  • Be sure to wear proper safety equipment during cleanup. It is recommended to wear a full-face respirator with certified P100 filter cartridges. These can be purchased at safety supply stores. Disposable paper dust masks do not provide the same amount of protection and should not be used to clean up toxic messes. Non-absorbent or rubber gloves should also be worn.
  • To prevent hazardous particles from becoming airborne never sweep or vacuum mouse droppings.
  • Carefully soak all infected surfaces with commercial grade disinfectant. A mixture of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water can also be used.
  • Wipe up all droppings and nesting material using a paper towel and dispose of in well-sealed plastic bags. Place bags outside in a sealed container and put out for garbage collection. Be sure to dispose of gloves and towels as well.
  • Thoroughly wash hands and clothing in with soap and water.

CLEANING MOUSE DROPPINGS IN THE ATTIC

Mice that have found their way into a home will spend a great deal of time in the attic. The warm and darkness of attics makes it an ideal place for mice to hide and breed. Homeowners can often go years without knowing they have mice attic and shocked to discover just how much activity has been going on just above their heads.

With time, attic that is home to mice will begin show significant evidence. One quick look into the attic will reveal not only their tunnels through the insulation but also the thousands of droppings they have left behind. Mice scatter their droppings wherever they go, making it impossible to perform spot clean ups. In many cases, a full attic restoration is required.

Mouse droppings inside your attic are not only harmful to your health; they can also significantly hurt the value of your home. Documented mouse activity on home inspector’s report will not go unnoticed by potential buyers. To avoid this situation is may be necessary to remove and replace all contaminated insulation.

  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open.
  • Clean soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances and protect with a light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Pour RV antifreeze into sinks, toilet bowls and tubs if heat is off during freezing season
  • Wash both sides of leaves on house plants

  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. Wiring may be wet or damaged
  • Send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

Storm Preparedness

6/6/2018 (Permalink)

BEFORE THE STORM

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • Postpone outdoor activities.
  • Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

DURING THE STORM

  • Use your battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates from local officials.
  • Avoid contact with corded phones. Use a corded telephone only for emergencies. Cordless and cellular telephones are safe to use.
  • Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. Unplug appliances and other electrical items such as computers and turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
  • Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes, and do not do laundry. Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
  • Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.
  • Avoid natural lightning rods such as a tall, isolated tree in an open area.
  • Avoid hilltops, open fields, the beach or a boat on the water.
  • Take shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid isolated sheds or other small structures in open areas.
  • Avoid contact with anything metal—tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, golf carts, golf clubs, and bicycles.
  • If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle

AFTER THE STORM

  • Never drive through a flooded roadway.
  • Stay away from storm-damaged areas to keep from putting yourself at risk from the effects of severe thunderstorms.
  • Continue to listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or to local radio and television stations for updated information or instructions, as access to roads or some parts of the community may be blocked.
  • Help people who may require special assistance, such as infants, children and the elderly or those with access or functional needs.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.
  • Watch your animals closely. Keep them under your direct control.

When to Take Mold Precautions

6/1/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO professionals handle water damages every day and know prompt action is required to prevent mold growth.  Mold is more likely to spread when moisture has been affecting an environment for a long period of time.  If your property has sustained a recent water damage, it is vital to have water removed and the structure dried promptly.

If you have experienced an ongoing moisture problem in the building, it is important to be alert to the following factors:

*The presence of visible mold.

*Strong musty odors which may indicate mold is present.

*Any evidence of past moisture problems that might indicate previous mold growth.

* Excessive humidity.

These conditions may require the expertise of a qualified Indoor Air Quality/Environmental professional to inspect the building for mold growth and water damage problems.

Does Your New York Home Have A Mold Problem?

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Does Your New York Home Have A Mold Problem? #SERVPROcleansmold #SERVPROofPatchoguemoldremediation

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Holiday Parade On Main St in Patchogue

11/30/2017 (Permalink)

A favorite yearly tradition of ours, gathering friends and employees to join us in being a part of the Christmas Parade on Main St. in Patchogue. This event is a great way to show our support for the town of Patchogue and is also a time to connect with the community. Hundreds of people come out to see all the floats that local vendors and businesses have put together with their staff. People, especially the youngsters, have come to look forward to seeing our Large Loss Army truck decorated with festive green lights and Christmas music playing filling the street with holiday cheer!

The weather was perfect this year, the street was lined four deep with smiling people, just a perfect way to kick off the holiday season!

54th Annual Patchogue Christmas Parade

11/22/2017 (Permalink)

One of the best times that SERVPRO of Patchogue has is when we participate in Patchogue's Annual Christmas Parade on Main Street. This event is a great way to show our support for the great town of Patchogue and is also a time to connect with the community. Hundreds of people come out to see all the floats that local vendors and businesses have put together with their staff.  Children are encouraged to bring their letters to Santa Claus, and families can also write a separate letter wishing holiday greetings to servicemen and women. This year we decided to decorate our Army truck that we use when handling large commercial losses. We decorated the truck with SERVPRO green Christmas lights and had Christmas music blasting from huge speakers that filled the streets with holiday cheer.  Our employees and their families stood in the back of the truck waving to all who came out to see the parade.  This event is always a great way to spend time in the town we love with the people we hold most dear to our hearts!  We have already started to think of bigger and better ways we can make the 55th Annual Christmas Parade the best it can be for all the patrons of Patchogue who gather every year to watch this event.

Fire Prevention at the Centereach Fire Department

Community Fire Prevention at the Centereach Fire Department Fun while learning about fire safety

October 8th thru the 14th is Fire Prevention Week. It is the perfect time to review and make an exit plan.

"Every second counts: Plan 2 ways out!”

*Draw a map of your home and/or business and mark two exits from each room and a path outside from each exit.

*Practice your fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day. Practice using different ways out each time.

*Teach children how to escape on their own in case an adult cannot help them.

*Make sure the number of your home and/or business is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.

*Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.

*Once you get outside, stay outside! Never go back inside a burning building.

Remember, Rich Delfino and his team at SERVPRO of Patchogue are always here to help.

Supporting Our Community

Community Supporting Our Community Congratulations!

It is with great pride that SERVPRO of Patchogue accepts this certificate in showing our support of the Civil Air Patrol. This is a terrific federally supported non-profit corporation that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force. It’s 3 key missions are emergency services, disaster relief operations and aerospace education for youth and the general public. Thank you to this organization for all you do in helping to support our communities in our great country!  It is wonderful to see today's youth involved and dedicated to such a program.

As an added source of pride our own Laura's son, Zachary, at 16 years old is an Airman Cadet with high aspirations and we are so proud of him! Yay Zac!  Thank you for all your community service, keep up the awesome work!

SERVPRO of Patchogue's Country Night for the Troops Fundraiser

4/17/2017 (Permalink)

On April 1st, 2017 we hosted our first  fundraiser for the United States Troops, and it was a huge success. We partnered with the USO in order to achieve the maximum amount of money possible.

For over 75 years, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization to serve the men and women in the U.S. military and their families, throughout their time in uniform. From the moment they join, throughout their assignments and deployments, and as they transition back into their communities, the USO is always by their side. The USO strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation. The USO is not part of the federal government. As a congressionally chartered, privately run organization, the USO relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities, and is powered by a family of volunteers to accomplish their mission of connection.

We raised over $10,000 for the United States troops and we had a great time doing it.  We are anxiously looking forward to hosting our second fundraiser in 2018!
