Fire can create soot and debris in your Patchogue home. Contact team SERVPRO to clean up the fire damage effectively.

SERVPRO Helps with Fire Damage in Any Structure

The secret to any successful fire remediation and restoration process is the fast response of the technicians involved. As industry leaders, we have invested in the right equipment, vehicles, and education to ensure the fewest delays or obstacles in starting the needed mitigation work after fire disasters. Some of these actions include:

  • Soot removal
  • Surface cleaning
  • Smoke remediation
  • Deodorization
  • Water removal
  • Air filtration

Insurance plays a critical role in the Patchogue fire damage restoration and recovery process, as much of the cost of this rehabilitation of your property can get covered by the policy you hold for your residence. SERVPRO cuts out all the red tape of the damage claim approval to communicate directly with your adjuster about needed documentation, estimations, and restoration plans to get the cleanup started on your property.

Pre-Job Scoping Objectives

Job scoping is one of our SERVPRO team's initial actions to gather pertinent information about a property after a fire loss emergency. There are several objectives to this process, and the knowledge gathered helps to focus the restoration process to come. Priorities include:

  • Ruined Contents – Direct inspection shows what contents have been destroyed by migrating effects and what can still get protected through relocation and on-site cleaning efforts.
  • Estimation – Claim approval is subject to the expected cost of restoration and reconstruction, so we use gathered scoping data to create the detailed estimate necessary.
  • Restoration Plan – Scoping helps our crew chief and production management create a custom restoration strategy for the property.

Fire Damage Hazards

Much like nearly all restoration projects that our SERVPRO team undertakes, there are specific safety and structural integrity challenges to consider. Fires produce several safety hazards, few being as directly impactful as soot particles. We take early actions to regulate safety concerns, such as air filtration.

Fire Damage Mitigation

Mitigating fire loss threats involves swift and deliberate actions to protect the property and its structure. There are several focuses of this early effort, including:

  • Debris - Debris removal is a high priority of our team as it directly correlates to two of the more challenging restoration obstacles: soot concentration and malodors.
  • Water - Water is another threatening loss effect for the property. Many floors can deal with pooling and standing water concerns with high volumes of water used to extinguish a fire. We have extractors and vacuums to help control this dangerous circumstance.
  • Structure - Fires can have a devastating impact on all exposed structural elements, especially those partially or fully combusted during the blaze.

Fire Cleanup and Smoke Remediation

FSRT-Certified technicians of our SERVPRO team have multiple strategies to eliminate pressing concerns like soot and smoke residues on the surfaces of building materials and contents. Cleaning up after an extinguished fire typically requires a combination of these efforts, beginning with solvents and detergents for surface damage and continuing through more intricate abrasive methods and mechanical actions like steel wool, brushing, media blasting, and more.

Post-Fire Damage Reconstruction

South Shore residences and businesses vary considerably in age, with many historic properties making up the more than 4500 homes in Patchogue. After a structure fire, repairs and reconstruction are often necessary, especially for these older buildings less protected against the spread and destruction of the blaze. Our general contractor license helps us complete needed building services immediately following restoration.

Patchogue fire damage restoration and reconstruction involve a careful combination of experienced cleaning, needed repairs, and designated work approved by the insurance provider to return the property to preloss condition. We recognize the importance of a fast response so that you can reach our SERVPRO of Patchogue team 24/7 at (631) 924-1801.

Disaster may strike at any time in Patchogue. Call SERVPRO of Patchogue damage restoration services needed for your property.

Pros Should Do Patchogue Fire Damage Restoration

Whenever your Patchogue residence suffers fire damage, you should resist the urge to remediate any of the effects yourself. No matter how seemingly little the impacts are, there is always a significant risk of making things worse if you don’t know what you are doing. Therefore, hiring trained professionals to do the work will often save you time and money in the long run.

Patchogue fire damage restoration service SERVPRO always warns local homeowners never to attempt to restore their impacted homes themselves. They advise residents not to perform such work on their fire-damaged homes because it could be dangerous for them and hinder later house fire clean-up, smoke remediation, and fire restoration efforts. Specifically, do-it-yourselfers risk:

  • Inhaling harmful smoke particles because they lack the appropriate protective equipment and do not follow professional safety procedures
  • Being injured by falling or collapsing structural elements as they attempt to remediate damage on their own
  • Receiving severe electrical shocks from submerged devices, malfunctioning appliances, and exposed wiring
  • Doing further harm to flooring, walls, and ceilings that expert remediators could have avoided doing.
  • Destroying family heirlooms and other beloved contents that might otherwise have been saved
  • Needing costly, time-consuming restoration work performed in the future in an attempt to undo the damage they previously caused.

Each of these potential risks is more than reason enough to avoid cleaning up and restoring your own fire-damaged residence. Ultimately, enlisting the aid of trained experts is going to make your home’s recovery safer, faster, and more successful.

Whenever a blaze tears through your house, have your helpful neighbors at SERVPRO of Patchogue clean and repair it. We can often effectively restore even the worst fire-related issues in less time than other local firms. With that said, contact us at (631) 924-1801 for assistance if you ever need fire damage restoration work done.

Chemical Sponges for Dry Smoke Cleanup in Your Coram Home

7/13/2022 (Permalink)

Fire damage in Coram is no joke, call us today to get you through the smoke.

Our SERVPRO technicians can answer all your fire smoke cleanup questions for your Coram residents.

With high-heat fires that burn quickly throughout Coram homes, specific effects exist for restoration teams or handy homeowners to battle once first responders have left the premises. While there is much that a property owner might need to overcome symptoms the fire leaves behind, smoke and soot residues are often among the most widespread and damaging conditions that can exist. Cleaning up these residues can be nearly impossible for those untrained in fire recovery and the cutting-edge equipment used in the restoration industry at this time.

Dry smoke cleanup can be overwhelming when assessing fire damage to Coram homes. Much like soot damages, this residue can travel far beyond the ignition point for the fire – moving even beyond where the other effects have stopped. Having the right tools makes the restoration process more comfortable and more efficient, and that is a commitment that our SERVPRO team has made.

We know how to manage dry smoke conditions, which begins with the employment of high-powered vacuums that can collect loose sediment and particulates that have come to rest on a surface. This approach is also ideal for soot buildup on specific surfaces. While we have advanced products and techniques to address all mitigation work for your property, the most popular cleaning tool for dry smoke is a chemical sponge.

Our SERVPRO team arrives at every fire recovery project with a collection of chemical dry cleaning sponges, as they discourage wet cleaning practices, which can result in smearing and staining. With a rubber material that can collect residue, dust, debris, and soot, each unit can clean an average of fifty square feet of damaged surface area to make fire loss situations “Like it never even happened.”

No matter what kind of residues and harmful symptoms might linger after a fire loss incident, our SERVPRO of Patchogue specialists can help. We have the tools and knowledge to quickly address aspects like cleaning, deodorization, and even pack-out content management solutions. Give us a call anytime at (631) 924-1801.

Appliances and Human Error can Cause Fire Damage in Patchogue

7/13/2022 (Permalink)

Don’t let your property be a victim of fire damage, SERVPRO of Patchogue is only a call away.

SERVPRO Provides Fire Damage Remediation Services for Patchogue Homeowners

Human beings are not perfect. Sometimes leave our homes in Patchogue vulnerable to catching on fire. Leaving a stove unattended or walking away from a lit candle can all contribute to flames erupting and threatening your home’s structure and your belongings. Similarly, malfunctioning electric circuits or appliances can be the culprit behind a home fire, causing significant damage and turning daily family life upside down. When disaster strikes, finding experts in fire damage remediation is your best option.

Homeowners in Patchogue can count on SERVPRO for fire restoration services of the highest quality. When a kitchen fire occurs, several priorities exist at once-neutralizing the ignition source, extinguishing the flames, and cleaning up surfaces. Eliminating the smell of smoke left behind is just as important, and our SERVPRO team is ready to tackle it all.

Understanding what caused the fire is at the core of a successful fire restoration job. Kitchen fires can be protein-based, meaning that meat, dairy, or other oil-based food items catch fire. The residue tends to be sticky and hard to remove, contrasting with organic materials that leave fine ash behind when they burn. At SERVPRO, we train to adapt our cleaning process to your specific needs, which we achieve with the help of some of the following-

  • EPA-approved cleaning solutions to remove residue from each surface in the home
  • Air scrubbers and odor counteracting pellets to neutralize and eliminate the smell of smoke lingering in the home
  • Removal of unsalvageable items damaged in the fire and its aftermath that pose a threat to the rest of the home

SERVPRO of Patchogue is at your service 24/7 to meet your fire damage and restoration needs. Call us at (631) 924-1801 and let us leave your home “Like it never even happened.”

Why Did the Grease Fire Leave a Circle of Soot on My Ceiling?

4/22/2022 (Permalink)

Finding fire damage on your ceiling and walls after any type of fire is definitely something that needs to be dealt with. Contact SERVPRO 24/7.

SERVPRO Technicians have Comprehensive Training in Handling all Types of Fire Damage and Restoring Local Patchogue Properties

When a pan with grease or oil on a stove ignites, the worst thing that can happen is for someone to attempt to put out the flames with water. The water turns into a vapor immediately and expands the fire. The result can be a soot pattern on walls and ceilings that appears to be reaching outward. In many cases, this type of smoke damage can get removed from the surfaces by using advanced techniques.

Why Does the Kitchen Still Smell So Bad After a Grease Fire/Smoke Cleanup?

A grease fire/smoke cleanup in your Patchogue property comes with many challenges for SERVPRO technicians. When a protein is cooking in an oil-based substance such as lard, cooking, or olive oil, and it heats to flashpoint, the now airborne protein molecules spray out onto surfaces. The result is a barely visible, very intense film that needs more than soap and water to remove. SERVPRO techs use their specialized cleaning methods to:

  • Lift away dried smoke residues off walls and ceilings
  • Mix solvent-based cleaning agents to remove greasy protein films
  • Test surfaces before cleaning to ensure the method chosen will not mar it

Odor control is a big part of this type of restoration service. Once the visible areas get restored, the technicians apply the needed level of scent removal. SERVPRO IICRC-certified technicians have the equipment to handle both embedded odors and airborne, which is an effective way to neutralize the aftermath of a grease fire completely.

SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 924-1801 helps local property owners with the aftermath of grease fire/smoke cleanup. The technicians are available 247 to make the damage to the home, "Like it never even happened."

Our Certified Technicians Have The Experience To Service Your Apartment In Patchogue

Our crew is equipped with protective suits and masks to keep them safe while working in the charred environment after a fire.

Restoring Your Patchogue Apartment After Sprinkler Suppression

Sprinkler systems can work quickly to suppress the spread and severity of fire damages to your Patchogue apartment and neighboring properties, but it comes with restoration requirements of its own. Not only do professional restoration technicians need to address lingering concerns like soot and smoke odors that can infiltrate the entire apartment, but with sprinkler systems, our team must also overcome widespread water loss effects as well.

Understanding the best approaches to overcome fire damage in Patchogue apartments begins with thoroughly assessing the situation. Our SERVPRO professionals must work quickly to determine the best methods to both contain the current effects to the damaged areas and start mitigating these losses to reduce out-of-pocket expenses and overall restoration times for our customers. The faster that this work can begin, the less likely other apartments adjoining yours also become affected by the smell or other effects lingering after the disaster.

Among the chief concerns with sprinklers, suppression is addressing any of the saturation of structural elements, kitchen cabinetry, and flooring throughout the apartment. Depending on the severity of the fire and the installed products to suppress it, the volume of water left throughout the unit can vary between damp surfaces and an inch or more of standing water. Addressing water damage often comes before other fire recovery solutions, as saturation and overexposure can be more detrimental to material composition and integrity, which can ultimately require removal and replacement without thorough drying.

Another concern is that while fire damage might stay localized to a single area, many apartment suppression systems involve the entire unit simultaneously. This design presents water damage and threats to areas where fire damage never occurred. Fortunately, along with the premier equipment that our SERVPRO team has for fire recovery and restoration, we also arrive with the full measure of our water extraction and drying tools to suit every need and condition.

Addressing the water effects after a fire might be an initial step, but there are still many obstacles to overcome to make this disaster “Like it never even happened.” We can clean soot and smoke residues from surfaces, employ soda and media blasting techniques to restore the look and function of countertops and other solid surfaces, and utilize an array of devices to deodorize your apartment and its contents thoroughly.

Fire losses can happen at any time. Trust in our SERVPRO of Patchogue team to handle all of the effects that might come along with them. Give us a call at (631) 924-1801.

Coram Residents Need Skilled Odor Removal with Fire Damage Restorations

1/21/2022 (Permalink)

Fire can create soot and debris in your home. Contact team SERVPRO to effectively clean up the fire damage. Our team is standing by 24/7 for you.

SERVPRO Covers All Bases on Fire Damage When Restoring Your Coram Home

When faced with fire damage, smoke odors remain some of the most challenging areas to address. Fire damaged homes often require various strategies that start right off when mitigation begins. Smoke particles can penetrate fabrics and other porous materials while also migrating into other areas of your home via the HVAC system. SERVPRO follows early mitigation protocols for smoke odor removal during house fire cleanup to be proactive during the project.

Debris removal is one of the most fundamental steps during a fire damage project in Coram. Any charred bits of contents and building materials can generate immense soot damage and odors. By carefully disposing of all this debris, it helps limit lingering smoke odors throughout the work zones.

SERVPRO employs a variety of odor counteractant products during each project while working to restore your fire-damaged interior. All proactive measures help to speed up the project with the help of:

  • Careful surface cleaning using wet or dry methods
  • Odor counteracting beads or granules
  • Thermal Fogging equipment
  • Air scrubbers with HEPA filtration
  • Hydroxyl generators

With many fire emergencies where smoke spreads far and wide throughout the home, SERVPRO odor control technicians (OCT) must place units in multiple areas to achieve neutralization. We also consider the nature of the materials burned to determine the right equipment and products to handle the job.

We repair versus replace whenever possible, which means we may seal walls and ductwork to keep smoke odors at bay. Depending on each situation, our crew may also use soda or dry ice blasting to remove charring on wall studs. Before we finish any project, we make sure there is no lingering foul odor as a reminder of the fire, and everything is “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO of Patchogue is available 24/7 to help with fire damage to your property. You can reach us for emergency service by dialing (631) 924-1801.

How Essential Are Specialized Equipment in Resolving Fire and Smoke Damage in Patchogue Homes?

11/26/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO provides ultrasonic cleaning in Patchogue to restore smoke and fire damaged delicate items like chandeliers and knick-knacks

SERVPRO Uses Ultrasonic Machines for Enhanced Immersion Cleaning Removing Fire Residues from Contents

Some fire and smoke residues require potent cleaning power for efficient removal. In other situations, the items involved add unnecessary levels of tediousness to the cleaning task. For instance, the uneven surfaces of crystal chandeliers mean tediously cleaning every piece by hand. Utensils and other contents might present similar challenges.

One way to ease cleanup when restoring fire and smoke damage in Patchogue properties is by using efficient immersion cleaning methods. Ultrasonic cleaning is one such option since it is highly effective and also eliminates the need to disassemble items such as chandeliers, thus lightening the workload. Our SERVPRO technicians dip the soiled items into the ultrasonic machines, where ultrasonic vibrations help agitate the soils accumulating on their surfaces.

Ultrasonic cleaning presents several unique advantages like:

  • Better control over cleaning solution amounts used
  • Different cleaning techniques like saturating, spraying, or immersion
  • Better agitation that relies on the implosion of millions of tiny bubbles--CAVITATION

Many times, cleaning soot and other fire residues takes more than just sufficient agitation and the right cleaning agents. For instance, stains on glass or thick and oily residues may not come off surfaces as easily as you might expect. For such tough cleaning tasks, all elements of cleaning must be maximized for satisfactory outcomes.

The four elements of cleaning are:

  • Time
  • Agitation
  • Chemical action
  • Temperature

You already know about the effectiveness of ultrasonic systems in agitating soiled contents. However, the machines also help our SERVPRO technicians maximize the other elements of cleaning. For instance, we can optimize the amounts of cleaning solutions used for the best chemical action. The machines also maintain the appropriate temperature during cleaning and also ensure the process is properly timed.

SERVPRO of Patchogue uses state-of-the-art equipment to resolve various forms of fire and smoke damage. Call us at (631) 924-1801 to help you address any issue, “Like it never even happened.”

What Is the Best Way to Handle Heavy Smoke Odor During Fire and Smoke Cleanup in Coram Homes?

9/29/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke and odor removal is no easy task. SERVPRO uses the latest technology and equipment for every fire-damaged property.

SERVPRO Combines Different Strategies to Deliver the Desired Results during House Fire Cleanup Exercises

Odor management can pose significant challenges to your cleanup effort after a fire at your Coram house. Even though odors are an invisible problem, unlike soiling, charring, and the other issues caused by fires, it makes staying in a house uncomfortable.

Unlike light odors, which can be eliminated by ventilating the property once the fire and smoke clean-up process in Coram properties is over, heavy smoke smell requires additional steps. One of the critical steps in defeating odor is locating and removing all charred debris and soot from the property. Our SERVPRO technicians collect and wrap such debris in polyethylene bags to prevent odor vapors from escaping into the air. Reaching all debris, especially the fine ones such as soot, is also possible by vacuuming soiled areas.

Other important considerations when cleaning to eliminate odors include:

  • Inspecting pockets such as crawl spaces, wall cavities, and above suspended ceilings
  • Inspecting and cleaning the HVAC system
  • Checking and cleaning any enclosed spaces such as cabinets

Deodorization procedures for combating heavy odors include:

  • Spraying structural surfaces with advanced odor counteractants
  • Treating hardwood furniture with dry solvent deodorizers
  • Sealing unfinished structural timber with duct sealer
  • Using activated oxygen to neutralize odors in hard to reach areas

Smoke remediation may take longer in case of severe odor since the deodorizers must address odor molecules on surfaces and those that penetrate deep into materials.

SERVPRO of Patchogue can perform fire and smoke cleanup in your home in a way that eliminates terrible odor, “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (631) 924-1801.

What Does It Take To Eliminate Odor During Fire Restoration of a Patchogue Home?

9/17/2021 (Permalink)

Fires cause major issues for you and your home. SERVPRO has the manpower and experience for any size fire disaster. Fire damage restoration services.

SERVPRO Splits Odor Management into Three Stages during House Fire Clean Up

Several issues, including strong odors, characterize the outcome of a fire incident. Cleaning the affected Patchogue house and removing most charred materials dissipates a portion of the smells. However, comprehensive deodorization is necessary to restore normalcy.

Similar to the other fire restoration processes in Patchogue homes, deodorization is not a single process. Various odor sources may require addressing in different ways. Otherwise, traces of unpleasant odors might remain. SERVPRO takes the restoration process a notch higher by dividing it into different stages.

Grouping the odor management processes help ease:

Many people consider deodorization a finishing process during the restoration of fire-damaged homes. However, it is possible to kick start it while beginning the other fire restoration processes. One advantage of an early start is the possibility of eliminating odors immediately after finishing cleanup.

Our SERVPRO teams can use containment approaches or even molecule neutralization at the early stages. An example of containment is spraying a chemical deodorizer into odor-causing materials to contain or block odor molecules that might otherwise vaporize into the air. For neutralization, our technicians can set up a hydroxyl or ozone generator which produces unstable oxygen molecules that combine with malodors, offsetting them.

The three stages of deodorization by SERVPRO are, therefore:

  • Chemical containment
  • Vapor odor control
  • Fogging

SERVPRO of Patchogue uses advanced fire restoration resources to deal with any problem, “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (631) 924-1801 whenever you need assistance.

Water damage often results from fire extinguishment. SERVPRO performs complete fire damage restoration and makes it "Like it never even happened."

Controlled Demolition for Fire Damage in Patchogue Home

Our goal is always to assist homeowners in limiting fire damage by using our restoration methods. We undergo extensive training, and we keep up with the latest advancements for both equipment and techniques in the restorative sciences.

When our SERVPRO location answered a call to mitigate fire damage in a Patchogue home, we found a living room gutted by fire. Too many high-wattage appliances running simultaneously on a strip plug caused an ungrounded wall plug to overheat and sparked a blaze within the wall cavity.

Water & Fire Damage Restorations

When the homeowner contacted us and told us their home contained both smoke and water issues. We advised them to stay out of the damaged area of the house. On arrival, we contained the entryways to the living room with heavy plastic to halt the spread of soot.

Exposure to water causes damage and makes items heavy. SERVPRO technicians removed the items from the room that had no potential for restoration due to damage from the fire. We extracted water from the wet carpet and padding to lessen the weight and make it easier to remove.

Mitigation on the room included removing all the debris left behind, and then we cut away the charred sheetrock so the wall cavity could get adequate ventilation to dry. After water extraction, we used hand vacuums with HEPA filtration to pick up all the soot.

Equipment for Removing Smoke Damage

After drying the water-affected areas of the room, air scrubbers with HEPA filters were used to capture the remaining odor-causing soot particles in the space. Once we had cleaned and disinfected surfaces, we deployed a Hydroxyl generator to neutralize any residual smoke odors so the home could be repaired and rebuilt without trapped odors.

We offer rebuilding services, and once we completed mitigation on the living room area, our SERVPRO crew chief gave the homeowner and adjuster a detailed list of the remediation and the necessary repairs to bring the room back to its preloss condition.

SERVPRO of Patchogue can clean, restore, and rebuild your property affected by fire damage. We are available 24-hours at (631) 924-1801 no matter if the fire damage is large or small; We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

What are the Results of Fire Damage Mitigation and Restoration?

Obviously, following a devastating fire, you want your life to return to normal as quickly as possible.  Services like ours attempt to help you do that by acting fast, reducing recovery times, and limiting expenses.  Our Patchogue technicians usually arrive at your home within four hours of your initial phone call.  These workers expertly evaluate your particular situation and determine how they can most effectively handle the fire damage.  All affected areas are properly inspected, their materials assessed, and a treatment plan is devised for handling your home’s particular problems.

Instead of just replacing affected structural elements and possessions, we first attempt to repair them.  This repair focus, of course, reduces overall costs and service completion times.  Workers skillfully clean and seal HVAC systems to ensure that harmful airborne contaminants are eliminated or minimized.  Impacted ceilings, walls, and other surfaces are deodorized and sealed so that unpleasant smells are done away with.  Often, after we finish working on a home, residents and guests are not able to notice that fire damage ever occurred.  Ultimately, we restore homeowners’ peace of mind following a destructive fire event.

House fires are always an unpredictable, traumatic experience.  In the aftermath of such an event, you are likely to be upset, confused, and do not know what to do.  These are all normal responses to a destructive house fire.  With all that said, though, rest assured that there are services that can help you overcome fire damage.  If a fire ever impacts you, contact SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 924-1801 for assistance.

Why Does Coram Residential Fire Damage Require Fast Action?

2/8/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO cleans and restores Coram properties and even china and crystals with ultrasonic bath emersions

Delayed smoke and soot remediation risks lasting, costly damage

Look at a map, and at the very center of Long Island, you find the hamlet of Coram, nestled in central Brookhaven Town. Considered the oldest settlement in Brookhaven's overarching community, it is about 65 miles east of New York City and roughly the same mileage west of Montauk Point, right in the middle of the island. Long Island Sound and Great South Bay are each about 8 miles to the north and south of Coram, respectively, supporting the notion of Coram's centering of Long Island. Although the sandy soil was not well-suited to agricultural pursuits, the area was attractive enough in other ways to attract colonists in the late 1600s.

What is the Origin of the Name Coram?

A few stories exist to account for the name, but the most likely is derived from the word "Wincoram," loosely translated from local indigenous dialects as "a passage between hills" or valley. The topography of Coram is relatively flat with a distinct ridge, in accord with this theory. Other derivation tales include:

  • The name Widecoram belonged to an indigenous individual living in the region, sometimes said to be a leader of his people or "Chief.".
  • The town carries the name of a sea captain and Londoner Thomas Coram, whose 18th-century engraving does hang in the old town meeting house located in the hamlet.
  • The name Coram is a Latin term that means "before" or "in the presence of," connected to Coram's location in the center of the region where meetings occurred.

What Was the First Business Run by a European Colonist in Coram?

In 1667, William Satterly, a resident of Setauket from Devon, England, asked for and received a land grant to open a tavern in what is now Coram, but called Wincoram at the date of the grant. His business choice made sense because the location of Wincoram was on a well-traveled route between communities on Long Island. Colonists began settling in the area in the years following. The first non-Indigenous baby born in Coram was Elizabeth Barnes on April 6, 1685. It took over 80 years from Satterly's land grant for the land surrounding his tavern to be designated a "village of the town" of Brookhaven. Only in 1749 was the population large enough to achieve village recognition.

SERVPRO Utilizes Proven Fire Damage Restoration Methods to Bring Each Impacted Area of Your Selden Property Back to Normal Once Again

Both a census-designated place and hamlet, Selden is nestled within the town of Brookhaven in the Suffolk County region of New York state. As of the time that the 2010 U.S. Census was conducted, Selden, NY, had a population of 19,851 people. Known as a suburb of New York City, this region is excellent for families, diversity, and public schools. You will also find impeccable housing and great places for dining and entertainment within a short distance.

Diving into the History of Selden, New York

In the middle of the 18th Century, farmers referred to this region as Westfield(s). Captain Daniel Roe is one of the earliest better-known residents. He fought during the French and Indian War, serving as a captain during the Revolutionary War. Because of his sacrifices, Captain Daniel Roe Highway was named after him. He had settled in Selden before the Revolutionary War in a home on Middle Country Road. The Captain was laid to rest within a small family cemetery located behind the shopping center in Old Westfield just south of his house.

Leading up to the Revolutionary War, Captain Roe sided with the Patriots. In autumn of 1776, he was assigned to head up a raid against the Hessian and Tory that was led by his cousin named Richard Miller, who also happened to be a wanted man. Once Miller came by Roe's house in uniform, he was then confronted by the Patriots, who ordered him to dismount. Rather than comply, he fired his pistol and tried to flee. The militiamen shot him, and he was brought into Roe's house, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Building Community in Selden, NY, Throughout the 19th Century

In 1815, the first school district was drafted in the Westfield area, and it was made up of Coram and New Village, which was later called Centereach. This district was initially called District 25, only to later be renumbered in 1842 as District 12. It remained so until the Middle Country Central School District was formed in 1957.

The post office was opened in 1852 in Westfield. Later, an attorney by the name of Henry Selden requested the community be named after him. By 1885, Selden had 88 residents as well as a Presbyterian church. It was also known for the production of early garden vegetables and melons town-wide in their farms. A cross-island bike path was constructed in 1897 that went through Selden. One of the most popular stops along the trail was Wheelmen's Rest, run by a man named Albert Norton.

Hiring SERVPRO ives you the best chance of turning back the pages on a fire loss using the latest in equipment and research-based techniques.

The SERVPRO Team Is Always Expanding Our Fire Damage Cleanup Knowledge -- Trust Us to Take Care of Your Coram Kitchen

Sometimes the only luck homeowners feel like they have is bad, especially when a long-awaited kitchen refurbishing suffers a fire loss. Our managers and technicians are life-long learners in the restoration business, and we either have experience with your fire damage recovery challenges or know where to find answers fast.

Do I Move On and Take a Loss on My Fire-Damaged Appliances?

Appliances are throughout your house in Coram, so fire damage to these labor-saving amenities is a high probability. Even if insurance would cover a portion of the replacement cost, the inconvenience of going without and arranging for new models is very disruptive. Our employees are skilled in cleaning the surfaces of appliances and trained to evaluate if the electronic components need service by authorized technicians. We can ensure your carefully chosen kitchen suite swings back into operation “Like it never even happened.”

What Are the Techniques Used to Save Fire-Soiled Appliances?

The similarities between appliances and other hard-surfaced fixtures and household goods mean we use wet cleaning and polishing methods to respond. Most appliance finishes are solely or a combination of the following non-porous materials:

    •    Metal
    •    Painted surfaces
    •    Glass
    •    Plastic
    •    Composite materials

What Are the Characteristics of the Residues Seen on Kitchen Appliances?

Because the fuels in a kitchen are commonly protein-based, including oils, the soiling can be heavy and greasy. An effective response is to increase the alkalinity of the cleaning products, relying on the chemical action to cut through the tightly adhered soot. Care must be taken to avoid pitting of some metals with short dwell times and thorough rinsing.

Hiring SERVPRO of Patchogue gives you the best chance of turning back the pages on a fire loss using the latest in equipment and research-based techniques. Call us at (631) 924-1801 to schedule an evaluation and get started on the solution.

When Space Heaters Cause Fire Damage in Patchogue

2/25/2020 (Permalink)

An unattended space heater caused a fire this room. Be sure to follow safety procedures when using space heaters.

Space Heater Plus Extension Cord Equals Fire Damage in Patchogue

If you currently use a space heater with an extension cord or power strip and have not experienced fire damage, you have been fortunate. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has found that more than 25,000 residential fires happen yearly due to space heaters.

A homeowner in Patchogue had fire damage from using a space heater plugged into an extension cord in a bedroom and left it running while sleeping. The cord overheated, and although contained to a small area, the charring needed significant cleanup.

Disposal of Charred and Unrestorable Items

With the homeowner's approval, the techs removed the charred table, chairs, bedding, and mattresses from the bedroom. Fortunately, the solid wood headboard, railings, and footboard had restoration potential through immersion cleaning to remove all traces of soot and smoke residues.

Removal of Smoke Damage

The techs tested the smoke residues on the wall around the bed to confirm it was dry smoke and required lifting away. This type of residue can get driven into surfaces and cause more loss if wet cleaning products or scrubbing actions get used. Once the cleanup completed, odor control applications made the bedroom ready for a new mattress and bedding.

Space Heater Safety

SERVPRO recommends the following safety tips for anyone using a space heater, particularly in the bedroom:

  • Use the space heater in a dry location, never use in the bathroom as the moisture has the potential to damage the interior of the heater
  • The space heater should be plugged directly into the electrical outlet and never into a strip plug or extension cord
  • When running a space heater, it should be the only device plugged into the outlet as they draw much power during operation
  • Unplug the heater when not using
  • If going to sleep or leaving the room, turn off the heater and unplug it
  • Place the heater at least three feet in distance from any combustible items and never run electrical cords under rugs or carpeting as they can ignite and cause a fire if the cord overheats.

SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 924-1801 has expert, certified technicians available 24/7 for fire damage restoration services. With their advanced equipment and using the latest methods for cleaning, they make the fire loss, "Like it never even happened."

We Have The Proper Equipment To Restore Your Patchogue Home After A Fire

2/7/2020 (Permalink)

This fire was caused by an electric malfucniton that started in the basement of this home. We arrived right away and began restoration.

Why Mist Deodorizers Work for Fire-Damaged Patchogue Homes

Deodorization is a critical element to making fire losses “Like it never even happened,” in your Patchogue residence. With the multiple layers and damaging effects to overcome in this enormous undertaking, our SERVPRO professionals utilize a wide variety of premier tools and equipment, as well as an assortment of potent cleaning products, counteractants, and solvents. Knowing the best approach to manage the smoke odors left behind in your residence can help to make the recovery effort more efficient for your property.

Addressing odors is often considered to be one of the last steps in managing fire damage in Patchogue homes, but this is not the case. Deodorization is a part of the mitigation process for our restorers and can get worse if not adequately addressed with the cleaning and debris removal we offer. There are numerous products and equipment designed to treat different conditions and odor severities, but mist or fog deodorizers are among the top choices for neutralizing lingering noxious scents.

Mist deodorizers like the ULV and thermal foggers both present a unique approach to eliminating odors in a fire-damaged house. We have several water-based deodorization products, both scented and unscented, that work in conjunction with the available fogging equipment our SERVPRO team uses. This product gets turned into a mist or vapor in the machine and dispersed throughout the affected area.

Vapors are an ideal approach for addressing harsh odors left behind after a fire because smoke particles and soot can get into crevices, cracks, and seams. These odor catalysts can be challenging for surface cleaning to reach or impact, but a fog of our odor-neutralizing agent can get into these inaccessible areas to complete the job successfully.

Odors are an unfortunate and expected byproduct of combustion in your fire-damaged house. As widespread as these threats can become, we have many tools that can help from our thermal and ULV foggers to other powerful tools like hydroxyl generators and ozone machines. We can utilize whatever equipment necessary to overcome harsh odors and other fire loss effects in your home. Give our SERVPRO of Patchogue team a call today at (631) 924-1801.

A Few Tips For Dealing With Fire Damage Incidents in Selden

12/15/2019 (Permalink)

Fire and smoke can quickly damage your home's structure and contents. Call SERVPRO right after the fire fighters leave.

Doing a Move-out the Right Way after Fire Damage Incidents in Selden

After a fire incident, it might be advisable to move contents temporarily from your property to a different location. Such action helps prevent secondary damage from corrosive substances such as soot and smoke residues or moisture action if significant amounts of water were used to quell the fire.

A move out after fire damage in your Selden property can only make sense if done cost-effectively. Some issues that can drive costs up include breakage, loss of items, and deterioration when in storage. Our SERVPRO technicians keep proper inventories, and we store the items in climate-controlled warehouses.

We also apply various cost-cutting strategies to make the process pocket-friendly. Because of fire residues and other soils, we opt to clean contents onsite before the move out whenever possible. Cleaning on-site eliminates the need to unpack, clean, and repack the items when they reach the warehouse. Minimizing the handling steps involved reduces the chances of breakage.

Another alternative cost-cutting measure is conducting partial move-outs. If some parts of the structure are secure after the fire incident, it is possible to move only a few items to external storage sites and leave the rest in the house. Our SERVPRO technicians usually opt to move the smaller items out of the premises and store large appliances and furniture items in spacious areas such as the garage or other rooms within the property.

Restoring fire damaged homes involves several steps, and knowing what to prioritize helps improve the outcome of the process. A move out is only helpful if done in a way that does not inhibit other crucial steps. For instance, if cleaning items before the move out can delay other time-sensitive steps such as drying the structure, then it is counterproductive. Our SERVPRO technicians evaluate the loss site to determine how best to do the move-out.

Moving contents helps create room for restoration and protects contents. Call SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 924-1801 to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Different Types of Smoke & Soot

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

What did it leave behind?

SERVPRO of Patchogue's first step at a fire scene is to address your concerns.  The second step is to pretest to see what type of fire has taken place.  Knowing the types of smoke and their behavior patterns are vital to proper restoration.

Did you know there are different types of smoke?

Wet Smoke: Plastics and Rubbers (low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary)

Dry Smoke: Paper and Wool (fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore the smoke rises)

Protein: Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire (Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor)

Fuel Oil Soot: Furnace Puff Back

Other Type: Tear gas, fingerprint powder, and fire extinguisher residue.

Pretesting determines the cleaning method, as well as what can be restored versus replaced. Pretesting also allows the SERVPRO Franchise Professional to focus on saving those precious items for you.  Isn’t that what really matters?

Destroy Odor with Deodoration

10/21/2018 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspections, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), SERVPRO of Patchogue provides specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage.  SERVPRO of Patchogue does not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; we see out and removed the source of the odor. Once the source is found, SERVPRO's own proprietary line of cleaning products is used to treat and prevent the odor from returning.  Any restorable item in affected areas will be professionally cleaned and deodorized, including furniture, draperies and upholstery, electronics, art, flooring, walls, ceilings, HVAC air ducts, and more.

Ask SERVPRO of Patchogue to explain the various deodorization methods available and which will work best for you.

If you or anyone you know suffer a fire damage or some other accident and require deodorization services, contact SERVPRO of Patchogue. Whether its fire, water, or mold damage, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we'll help make it :Like it never even happened."

November - when cooler temperatures arrive, the leaves change, and family-oriented get-togethers, like Thanksgiving, begin the holiday season.  While you are busy whipping up delicious dishes in the kitchen, it is also important to take time to remember safety.

Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home-fire-related injuries in the United States. The Behavior of Smoke

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

The soot will then be tested to find our what type of smoke damaged occurred. Pretesting determines the proper cleaning method and allows SERVPRO of Patchogue to focus on saving your precious items.

SERVPRO of Patchogue knows that smoke can penetrate various cavities within the structure, causing hidden damage and odor. Our knowledge of building systems help them investigate how far smoke damaged may have spread. The following are additional facts you may not know about smoke.

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

Five Dangers of Deep Frying a Turkey

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

A deep-fried turkey: delicious, but worth it? If you've seen any of the numerous videos of turkey fryer explosions and fires online, you may have asked yourself this question before.  Running the risk of bodily injury or property damage is something to consider when menu planning this holiday season.

  1. Turkey fryers can easily tip over, spilling hot cooking oil over a large area.
  2. An overfilled cooking pot will cause cooking oil to spill when the turkey is put in, and a partially frozen turkey will causes cooking oil to splatter when put in the pit.
  3. Even a small amount of cooking oil spilling on a hot burner can cause a large fire.
  4. Without thermostat controls, deep fryers can overheat oil to the point of a standing fire.
  5. The sides of the cooking pot, lid, and pot handles can get dangerously hot.

Kitchen Cautions

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

Each November, families gather together to celebrate Thanksgiving by preparing a delicious feast, but if you don't practice safe cooking habits, your holiday could become hazardous very quickly.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries.  The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. It's important to be alert to prevent cooking fires.

  • Be on alert! If you are sleeping or have consumed alcohol don't use the stove or stovetop.
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.
  • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while the food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire - oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, curtains - away from the stovetop.

If you have a cooking fire, consider the following safety protocols to help keep you and your family safe.

  • Just get out! When yo leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
  • Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.
  • For an oven fire, turn of the heat and keep the door closed.
  • If you try to fight the fire, make sure everyone else is out and you have a clear path to get out.
  • Keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it has completely cooled.

Carbon Monoxide: A Silent Cold-Weather Killer

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Carbon Monoxide is a gas you cannot see, taste, or smell. According to ready.gov, an average of 430 Americans die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Oftentimes, it is the result of faulty, improperly used, or vented consumer products like furnaces, water heaters, room heaters, and engine powered equipment, such a portable generators.

However, there are precautions you can take to help protect yourself, your family, and your employees from deadly carbon monoxide fumes.

Reduce the chance of carbon monoxide exposure in your workplace by performing regular maintenance on equipment and appliances that can produce carbon monoxide.  Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home, including all bedrooms.

Consider having all fuel-burning heating equipment and chimneys serviced annually by a professional. Use portable generators only in well-ventilated areas away from doors, windows, vents, and any other opening to prevent fumes from entering the home.

For additional carbon monoxide safety information, visit usfa.fema.gov or osha.gov.

What To Do Until Help Arrives

10/9/2018 (Permalink)

A fire can leave behind soot, smoke damage and a host of other problems. Ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting, and floors will often need a thorough professional cleaning. If your home or business suffers a fire, it is important to take the appropriate steps to prevent further damage until SERVPRO of Patchogue arrives. The following tips may reduce damage and increase chances of a successful restoration.

DO:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from embedding into upholstery and carpet
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or odd linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer/refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome kitchen/bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holing tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system

DON'T:

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting SERVPRO of Patchogue.
  • Don't attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting SERVPRO of Patchogue.
  • Do not attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV sets, radios, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • So not consume food or beverages that may have been stored close to the fire, heat or water, as them may be contaminated.
  • If ceiling is wet, do not turn on ceiling fans. Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.
  • Don't send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor.

Smoke Alarms: Life Savers

9/5/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms save lives when properly installed and maintained, according to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA).

In homes, smoke alarms should be in every bedroom and on every level, including the basement. In office and commercial environments, check your state requirements or contact your local Fire Marshall to help ensure all codes are met.

Test smoke alarms monthly using the test button. Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries need the entire smoke alarm unit replaced every 10 years. Other alarms need batteries replaced every year, and the unit replaced every ten years. If the alarm chirps signaling low battery, take the proper steps to replace the unit or the batteries immediately. Never disable or remove the battery from an alarm.  Almost half of fires where smoke alarms were present but did not activate had missing batteries or disconnected batteries (NFPA).

In larger commercial facilities, hard wired or wireless smoke alarms offer benefits such as not needing to be tested as often and activating throughout the entire building if smoke is detected in just one area (NFPA).

If you need help installing, testing, or changing batteries in your smoke alarms, contact your local fire department, an electrician, or the American Red Cross.

Be sure your home or workplace has a fire emergency plan in place and conduct regular fire drills. For more information on emergency preparedness, contact SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 924-1801

Soot and Smoke Clean-up

9/4/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Patchogue will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Destroy Odors with DEODORIZATION

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

The quicker we get there, the quicker you get cleaned up!

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard to reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

If you require deodorization services, contact us at 631-924-1801. Whether is it fire, cigarette smoke, pet odors, mold or decomposition, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we'll make it "Like it never even happened"
