The Risk of Compounding Home Damage After a Storm | SERVPRO of Patchogue

2/20/2024 (Permalink)

Roof Repair Restoration on Home We are no stranger to helping recover homes from storm damage. Call SERVPRO of Patchogue today for quick assistance!

Our homes protect us every day from weather threats whether we know it or not. The heat, humidity, bitter wind and strong storms can impact our walls and roofs while we stay safely tucked away inside.

However, our homes are not invincible and can suffer the weight of constant threats and impacts. Damage can occur in an instant and leave your home vulnerable to the elements.

Quick action is necessary to not only fix the damage, but to also prevent further damage from occurring to your home. SERVPRO of Patchogue is here to offer fast restoration service after a storm!

The Dangers of Wind

We all know how strong the wind can be whipping off of the bay, and it can really pick up speed depending on the current threat. Regular thunderstorms can bring moderately high winds, but coastal storms and hurricanes can easily bring wind that tops 100 miles per hour or more. These sudden bursts of wind can cause all kinds of damage in seconds.

When the wind picks up, debris can easily be thrown about your yard and thrown against your home. Impact damage from a broken tree limb or even something huge like a flying trampoline can cause severe damage to your roof or siding, but it can also lead to water damage over time.

Broken windows or parts of your home that have been exposed to the elements for any period of time can become soaked if the rain starts to fall. Not only do you have structural damage, you now have water damage, too.

The Danger of Water

Water can be just as frustrating. Strong summer storms can bring heavy rain, hurricanes can push the bay up onto our properties and heavy snowstorms can cause issues when the snow starts to melt in the springtime. Each instance comes with its own risk, but water can easily infiltrate your homes. Even just the tiniest gap or crack along your roofline or foundation can become problematic for you.

If the water isn’t cleaned up quickly, it can easily seep and leak behind your walls and under your floors, becoming virtually impossible to dry up without professional help. If any sort of moisture is lingering behind your walls, mildew and mold can become a problem. Over time, a mold infestation can break down your structural beams and can even become a health hazard for your family.

What We Can Do to Help

We know that time is of the essence when it comes to home emergencies, which is why we jump right into action the second you call us. The longer damage sits, the worse it can become and higher the risk of compounding damages.

We will simultaneously work on securing your home from further damage, address structural issues, water problems and even mold infestations all at once. Our goal is to return your home to its pre-storm damage state as quickly as possible.

Storm damage can be severe. Contact SERVPRO of Patchogue for immediate restoration assistance.

Bracing for Coastal Flooding: Preparation Tips and Early Warning Signs from SERVPRO of Patchogue

1/9/2024 (Permalink)

Water on the floor of a tiled kitchen The Aftermath of Water Inundation

The National Weather Service has recently declared a Coastal Flood Warning for Long Island. Members of Long Island communities could experience road closures, tidal surges, inland flooding, and more. To help our valued communities stay safe and protected during the duration of this Coastal Flood Warning, SERVPRO of Patchogue has compiled a comprehensive guide on how to prepare for coastal flooding, including early warning signs and preparation tips.

Early Warning Signs

  • Monitor Weather Updates: Stay informed about weather conditions through reliable sources. Pay attention to warnings and advisories issued by local authorities.
  • Tidal Predictions: Keep an eye on tidal predictions, especially during high tide cycles. The National Weather Service provides vital information on expected inundation levels, along with local news sources.
  • Wind and Wave Conditions: Large breaking waves of 15 to 20 feet along the oceanfront, along with west-to-southwest gale winds, can contribute to coastal flooding. Regularly check wind and wave forecasts for your area.

Preparation Tips

  1. Evacuation Plan: Develop a clear evacuation plan, including the nearest shelters and evacuation routes. Familiarize yourself with community evacuation procedures, and communicate the plan with your family.
  2. Secure Valuables: Move valuable belongings to higher ground, especially in basements and low-lying areas. Consider using waterproof containers for essential documents, ensuring they remain protected in the event of flooding.
  3. Emergency Kit: Assemble a comprehensive emergency kit with essential supplies. Include non-perishable food, an ample supply of water, medications, a flashlight, extra batteries, and a well-stocked first aid kit.
  4. Property Protection: Take proactive measures to safeguard your property. Install flood barriers or sandbags around your premises, particularly if you reside in vulnerable areas. Elevate electrical appliances and furniture to minimize potential damage.
  5. Vehicle Safety: Be cautious about where you park your vehicles. Avoid low-lying or vulnerable areas near the waterfront, and move your vehicles to higher ground to prevent flood damage.
  6. Communication Plan: Establish a communication plan with family members and neighbors. Ensure everyone is aware of emergency contact information, evacuation plans, and meeting points.
  7. Stay Informed: Stay up-to-date on the latest developments by continuously monitoring weather updates through official channels. Be prepared to adapt your plans based on the evolving situation and any additional advisories.
  8. Clearing Drainage: Ensure that drains and gutters around your property are clear of debris. This helps prevent water buildup and facilitates proper drainage during heavy rainfall, reducing the risk of localized flooding.

After the SERVPRO Green Fleet Arrives, Coram Property Owners's Contents Are Getting Rescued

Content Management for Flood-Damaged Belongings in Coram Homes

Keepsakes, treasures, and valued possessions are all unique elements of your life and items that can be protected in your Coram home after a loss incident. Our SERVPRO professionals have considerable experience in mitigating flood losses in our region of New York, and part of this recovery process is securing the customer's belongings from further damage. To accomplish this, our content management team can offer multiple solutions.

While flooding can affect hundreds of homes in our area a year, flood damage in Coram properties vary from one incident to another. While one home might contend with several feet of standing water throughout the main living spaces, another house might only have a couple of inches of water in the unfinished basement. When migrating water encounters contents in your home, deterioration, microbial growth, and other structural weaknesses could result.

In-House Drying and Recovery

In many situations, our SERVPRO professionals work to restore and recover damaged belongings of yours on-site rather than transport them elsewhere. Lightly affected possessions can get dried using tools like our centrifugal air movers and refrigerant dehumidifiers. Unaffected belongings in the path of the migrating floodwater can also be moved to a safer location out of harm's way.

Off-Site Restoration

There are circumstances where our pack-out process is the best solution for compromised belongings in your flooded home. We can carefully move these items to our nearby facility for focused drying, cleaning, disinfection, and deodorization. With our climate-controlled warehouse, we can store your items safely until it is time for them to get returned. We can stage these items several days before returning to the house to be confident that they have been fully restored and sanitized.

We want to make your house a home again, which involves addressing flood damage on every front after a disaster. No matter how our experienced SERVPRO of Patchogue team can help after a flood, we have the personnel and premier equipment to meet the demands of your damaged property. Give us a call anytime at (631) 924-1801.

Storm Damage Recovery by SERVPRO

Flooding in any situation can be a damaging and traumatic experience for Coram property owners. Our professionals have a quick response with industry-leading recovery equipment to help protect your property and its contents from when we first arrive.

Flash flood damage in your Coram home can be among the most destructive of conditions, as there is little warning or preparation that property owners can do to safeguard the house from a powerful natural disaster. For those in lower-lying areas, these damages can be even more substantial. The basins of area topography can experience the full measure of these powerful water waves, often damaging both underground levels like basements and the main floor of the house as well.

Overcoming what damages exist in your property after a natural disaster like this requires an immediate response from homeowners to secure the services of our trained SERVPRO professionals. We have a ready trailer stocked with extraction and drying equipment to get mitigation work started quickly. Combined with our experience in a controlled demolition, that can quickly protect your home from contamination and bacterial threats that can often exist after natural flooding.

Contamination is often a threat for homes and those exposed, as flood water can contract multiple types of bacteria, chemicals, and other hazardous substances in its path to your lower-lying residence. We have a thoroughly trained and experienced biohazard cleaning team certified through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and the American Bio Recovery Association (ABRA) to offer disinfection and decontamination solutions for your property in the mitigation phase.

Many threats exist in any home affected by flash flooding, so you should trust the team with the experience and training to handle them. SERVPRO of Patchogue professionals are available 24/7 by calling (631) 924-1801

Our Technicians Discuss Steps To Restoring Your Coram Home After A Flood

7/13/2022 (Permalink)

Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Patchogue to help with flood restoration to your property.

Steps To Restoring Your Flood Damaged Coram Home To Its Original Condition

It is difficult to estimate the damage that flooding can cause in your home. You could extract the water, but it takes more than that to restore your home to its initial condition. You must identify items that can be salvaged and separate them from things you must discard. It is possible to restore items like furniture, appliances, photographs, and clothes.

When a flood damages your Coram residence, you must act quickly to prevent secondary destruction like mold growth. If a week passes without working on your home, its foundation can weaken. In less than a month after a flood, the cost of repairing your home’s walls, floors, and rooftop could become too expensive.

It is advisable to contact a reliable company which specializes in restoring homes destroyed by natural disasters, such as SERVPRO. You need to notify your insurer about the loss. If you have flood insurance, it can pay for flood-related restoration costs. However, you need to assess the damages quickly to start reconditioning your home. With most insurers, you can claim the following after a flood:

  •   Drying your house
  •   Fixing items like furniture and appliances
  •   Removing debris and chemicals spread by contaminated water
  •   Restoring your home

Our crew can help you clean your home by removing solid waste, debris, and silt from the floor. We can use rakes and shovels to remove these materials. This is also an excellent way to expose structural surfaces for additional evaluation and inspection. Our Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRTs) can also pump out the standing water from your home effectively. If the water is above two inches deep, we can use submersible pumps to extract it.

We can also sanitize the water with disinfectants before pumping it out. If there is a significant amount of sewage in basements or crawl spaces, we can work with a septic tank pump contractor to remove it. Our technicians dispose of contaminated water in a sanitary sewer system or licensed disposal facility. When using portable extractors indoors, we direct the waste down a toilet. We cleaned and disinfected the bathroom later.

Our technicians also place air movers in the appropriate positions to dry a home. We consider the materials we are drying, such as walls, floors, ceilings, and under cabinets, to determine the correct number of air movers to use and where to position them. Our SERVPRO crew then uses dehumidifiers to minimize the humidity in the air. We also use moisture sensors and moisture meters to detect the amount of moisture in your home. If moisture is present, we can take additional measures to dry the affected areas thoroughly. We restore homes quickly, helping our customers save time and money.

When flood damage restoration services are needed in Patchogue, Selden, or Centereach, call SERVPRO of Patchogue for help at (631) 924-1801. We have the appropriate equipment and expertise to restore your home. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Our Flood Damage Technicians Can Cleanup And Rebuild Your Patchogue Home

SERVPRO of Patchogue stands ready 24/7 to serve the local area for mitigation of flood damage.

SERVPRO Cleanup And Rebuild From Flood Damage In Patchogue Home

Flood damage is one of the most severe events a property owner faces. Groundwater is a category three biohazard, also known as black water, should be professionally mitigated for health reasons.

SERVPRO received a call to assist a homeowner in Patchogue with the cleanup of flood damage. The water affected several rooms in the home. Along with the pungent odor, our technicians scoped the water loss areas. They found substantial damage to the structure and contents.

The homeowner had turned off the electricity in the home, so we brought our generators to get to work. Water migrates rapidly once inside a home, is absorbed into porous materials such as carpet and padding, and gets wicked into sheetrock.

Safety is a priority in any cleanup, particularly with black water sites such as this. Our technicians wore protective gear, including respirators with P100/organic vapor cartridges. As they entered, they sprayed EPA-registered disinfectants on the affected areas to limit exposure to contaminants during water remediation.

We communicated with both the homeowner and adjuster during the cleanup phase. In this case, the affected rooms required controlled demolition removal of the water-damaged sheetrock. The carpet and pads in each room required disposal, and we rolled and tied them at the curbside per city regulations. We examine the restoration potential of porous home contents affected by black water on an item-by-item basis; however, usually, they require disposal as a loss.

Once we completed the debris removal and water extraction stage, we worked on drying the structure in preparation for rebuilding. Forcing warm, dry air into the wall cavities and floor joists ensures the structure dries from the bottom up and negates mold and moisture retention issues.

After drying, our technicians clean and disinfect all remaining surfaces to get them ready for rebuilding. Our SERVPRO location offers building services. We gave the adjuster and homeowner a list of the necessary structural restorations needed to bring the home to its pre-damaged condition with seamless service from start to finish.

SERVPRO of Patchogue stands ready 24/7 to serve the local area to mitigate flood damage. Call us at (631) 924-1801 for immediate assistance with your water loss situation, whether a corner in a room or the entire home; We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Removing Home Flood Damage from a Patchogue Bedroom

SERVPRO Flood Restoration Pros Remediate Moisture, Bacteria, and Debris

Home flooding in Patchogue and other areas in the US potentially impacts millions of homes per year. Worse still, several million more homes in at-risk areas are not yet designated on Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood maps.

Fortunately, SERVPRO professionals can respond to Patchogue homeowners’ flood damage cleanup needs with 24/7 service performed to Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards. Restoration technologies ensure flood damage and contaminants are removed from the affected residence.

Drying Bedroom Flooding with Restoration Strategies

Removing solid debris and unsalvageable materials from a property is essential for successful restoration. SERVPRO professionals dressed in personal protective equipment (PPE) can perform this service to keep homeowners safe. When carpeting and mattresses are saturated, these items require disposal, as technicians cannot guarantee they are free of contaminants like sewage, pests, or chemical runoff.

  • After removing debris and performing necessary controlled demolition, SERVPRO professionals focus on extracting and drying moisture. Before extraction, unsanitary surfaces may be sprayed with an EPA-registered biocide to halt bacterial growth and lessen odors.
  • Water extraction may take several rounds to remediate moisture to levels that drying equipment can handle in a timely fashion.
  • Air movers and dehumidifiers coordinate to pull up remaining moisture and isolate it for disposal while drying the space.

While some flooding can be remediated with on-site cleaning and drying, there are many instances where contents may require movement from the property to an approved SERVPRO warehouse during cleanup. The firm’s inventory process, both digital and on paper, keeps contents well-organized and easy to access for when homeowners need to access the warehouse to retrieve these items.

Homeowners can contact SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 924-1801 for “Like it never even happened,” restoration services.

Structural Storm Damage That Can Flood Patchogue Homes

2/16/2022 (Permalink)

Storm flooding can quickly cause water damage. Contact SERVPRO for water removal and remediation services.

Post-storm Damage Flooding Must be Resolved Immediately in Patchogue properties.

Emergency services should begin as soon as possible when your home experiences flood damage. Some of the initial efforts our experienced SERVPRO team provide include:

  • Extraction
  • Board-up
  • Tarping

Flash Flood Infiltration

Severe storm damage to Patchogue homes and businesses can sometimes result in flash flood conditions that overwhelm structures. From direct penetration in the foundation area to water pouring in the main level, flash floods are highly destructive and powerful forces of nature that require immediate mitigation.

Roof Damage and Water Penetration

There are many ways the roof can become damaged during storms. From hail and wind to blizzard conditions that leave aging roofs dealing with the weight of more than a foot of snow, it does not take months to expose vulnerabilities in this aspect of your home’s exterior.

Tree Trunk and Limb Damage

Harsh weather can directly impact aspects of your property, such as trees. Ice storms can dramatically weigh down branches and limbs in the winter, which ultimately causes these portions of the tree to break and damage your property. Trees can puncture the roof or remove siding, both of which can allow direct floodwater entry to the home.

Flood Restoration and Water Removal

Regardless of how water damage resulted in your home, it is vital to get medication and services started as soon as possible. As leading water restoration professionals for the area, we have extensive extraction equipment to manage pooling water on the surface. The faster that flood water can get extracted, including any threats of solids or debris, the better protection for exposed surfaces like porous carpeting and hardwood floor.

With multiple reasons that your home or business may become flooded after storm damage, responding technicians must be prepared for several scenarios. Depending on the threat to your property, including the pressing need for flood mitigation, our SERVPRO of Patchogue team is ready to help with a variety of industry-leading equipment. Give us a call today at (631) 924-1801.

Better Preparation and Superior Resources Help SERVPRO Deliver Quality Service Cost-Effectively

There are many purposes for seeking professional help after flood damage, including safety, convenience, and ensuring every task is done thoroughly. However, when it comes to cost, many people are unsure whether to expect a hike or reduction when a professional is involved. Various reasons can contribute to a reduction.

Many people do not associate hiring flood damage professionals in Patchogue with cost reduction since the service is provided by businesses that must generate profit from the services delivered. However, how a professionally run firm like SERVPRO manages its operations helps guarantee cost-effectiveness for all clients. To understand how cost-effectiveness arises, you should evaluate the main aspects of flood management that consume money.

The main costs you have to take care of during the flood restoration process include:

  • Labor costs
  • Replacement of items and materials
  • Restoration resources such as cleaning aids

Most of the restoration tasks, whether it is moving items or cleaning soiled areas, require human input. Therefore, labor costs can accumulate to unexpected levels, especially if you are using untrained people. SERVPRO controls labor costs even before arriving at your loss site.

Managing labor costs is possible by taking actions like:

  • Better and continued training of work crews
  • Preparing the work crews thoroughly before sending them to the loss site
  • Assigning specific people in the work crews to supervise the operations

A better-informed workforce is more efficient, and so they can complete the restoration faster. Since labor is based on the duration worked, this saves money.

Situations involving moisture and microbes continue to worsen the longer moisture remains unaddressed. Therefore if a restoration team works faster, you save some items that you would otherwise remove.

SERVPRO of Patchogue is a great partner when you want flood damage addressed, "Like it never even happened." Call us at (631) 924-1801.

What Makes SERVPRO One of the Premier Flood Damage Mitigation Services in Patchogue?

Flood damage mitigation of your Patchogue home is a complex task that needs professionals to accomplish. Apart from the potential of dealing with contaminated water and debris, flood restoration also requires a thorough understanding of drying principles. IICRC certified SERVPRO techs have years of experience restoring flood damage, and We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

SERVPRO techs prioritize water removal during flood damage mitigation of your Patchogue property. Once the standing water is removed, it is time to dry and decontaminate the structure. It is important to dry the structure as quickly as possible to eliminate further damage due to the interaction of moisture and the building materials.

How SERVPRO Techs Achieve Fast Drying During Water Damage Repairs in Patchogue Homes?

SERVPRO techs study the movement of moisture, heat, and air through the structure to speed up the drying process of your flood-damaged Patchogue home. The better the understanding of these processes, the more effective a drying plan can be.

SERVPRO techs often need to control airflow through the affected regions of the structure to speed up the drying process and establish drying zones. The moisture and air movement are highly regulated in these zones, allowing the material to dry as quickly as possible. Equipment such as air movers and dehumidifiers are often used to maintain a predetermined air movement and humidity level.

Different parts of the structure dry at a different rate, and hence, it is important to set realistic drying goals. SERVPRO techs understand the challenges of restoring different types of material and plan their drying strategy accordingly.

What Are the Dangers of Delaying the Restoration of Flood Damage in Coram Homes?

9/24/2021 (Permalink)

Storm and flood damage restoration services by SERVPRO are second to none. Call now!

One Convenience of Using SERVPRO for Water Damage Repairs Is Elimination of Delays

After a storm damages your Coram property, the desire to clean and renovate it is high. However, the obstacles preventing such remediation from commencing in good time can also be many. Instead of delaying, you should probably seek professional assistance.

Professionals can help expedite flood damage restoration at Coram properties since they have the technical skills and other resources that can help overcome obstacles easily. SERVPRO also presents an additional advantage since we have extensive experience helping homeowners recover from flooding. Therefore we understand what challenges to expect and how to address them.

Common issues that precipitate delays after a flooding incident include:

  • Presence of contaminants such as raw sewage and chemicals
  • Physical or electrical hazards
  • Presence of large debris such as tree branches

The issues can cause little delays or extend into longer durations like weeks or even months. Time passage is not as trivial as it might seem since it can lead to severe problems such as permanent wood damage through cupping, twisting, or rotting. The cost of replacing structural materials or furniture due to extreme yet avoidable deterioration is high.

Carrying out timely flood restoration takes several things, some of which you might not expect. The ability to venture into the loss site safely immediately after the incident is one such aspect. Our SERVPRO teams can manage that because our technicians are equipped with various PPE, including hard hats, rubber boots, and heavy-duty gloves that protect them from contaminants, electrical hazards, and physical dangers such as falling objects.

Other aspects that help expedite water damage repairs include:

  • Use of state-of-the-art water removal equipment
  • Cleaning using advanced methods and equipment such as rotating brushes
  • Restoring slightly damaged materials using methods such as sanding

What Is The Best Way To Drain A Basement When Addressing Flood Damage In Patchogue?

SERVPRO Helps Pump Out Basements as Part of Our Water Removal Services

If the flooding in your home also includes an inundated basement, it might delay your plans to resolve the flood damage loss. Elevating water from the basement can prove an insurmountable challenge, especially if mixed with sewage or if the basement is full of junk.

The flood damage in Patchogue basements may require several steps to resolve completely. After removing the water, you might need to shovel out mud or silt, teardown surface materials such as carpets, and dry the concrete substrate. Disinfecting the area helps finish the process. Our SERVPRO technicians can help ease these processes while handling water extraction for you.

It is Easier Because we Offer Several Other Services Apart From Water Removal, Including:

  • Biohazard remediation
  • Sewage cleanup
  • Rodent clean up services
  • Basement flooding cleanup

Using high-pressure pumps easily overcomes the high head requirement when removing water from the basement. Our SERVPRO technicians also use self-priming trash pumps which readily remove residue-filled water or slurry. Our crews wear protective gear such as bodysuits, rubber boots, and heavy-duty gloves limiting exposure to contaminants.

After removing standing water, it is essential to dry the basement to avoid secondary moisture damage such as mold, which thrives in wet, dark areas. If your basement is finished as a regular room, drying simply requires the placement of air movers and dehumidifiers. However, if it is unconditioned space, additional steps, including setting up a closed drying system, are necessary to help with moisture management.

Restoring Patchogue Properties Flooded by the Rise of Swan River

Swan River is a staple of the landscape and even some of the economic backbone of the Greater Patchogue area. Much like any other body of water, though, substantial rainfall over a prolonged period can cause water levels to rise to dangerous heights. When the water levels crest after a few days of collecting runoff from natural paths and the sanitary sewers, homes along the banks of Swan River become at risk for rising waters and flooding in their basements and main floors. Preventing this intrusion might not be possible, but restoring the property afterward can be more efficient and effective with the acquisition of our experienced professionals.

We know how devastating flood damage can be to Patchogue homes with the river levels rise to severe levels. Even if many of these homes only experience flooding of their basements, this can still be a costly and widespread damaging event that requires immediate attention from trained IICRC-Certified Water Restoration Technicians like our SERVPRO team. With readiness for all emergencies that threaten our region, our experienced team remains prepared for natural disasters that could occur.

Basements are targets for flooding

While many homes have taken preventative measures to avoid catastrophic water intrusions along the Swan River, these solutions are rarely entirely effective. With many modern homes throughout the region constructed with finished basements, our SERVPRO professionals must react quickly to provide effective mitigation services to prevent the spread of these effects to new areas. Our technicians implement controlled demolition techniques to remove damaged materials.

With the potential for chemical and bacterial contamination of rising floodwaters, the cleaning done by our technicians in your home plays a vital role in preventing the presence of hazardous contaminants and germs.

While you cannot predict when rainfall has occurred steadily and heavily enough to allow for dangerous cresting of Swan River, but when this happens, you can count on SERVPRO of Patchogue to help you through the restoration of your damaged property. Give us a call anytime that you need us at (631) 924-1801.

Without the Correct Intervention and Mitigation Strategy Flood Damage Could Permanently Damage Your Home.

Patchogue is a hamlet in Suffolk County, Long Island. Like many places in this part of New York State, the region comprises a collection of villages that offers diverse accents and backgrounds. Patchogue, specifically, is on the southern shores of Long Island and connects with the Great South Bay. It offers the famous white sands of Long Island's most sought-after beaches as a tourist destination. There are also several walking trails and winery tours to book a weekend trip away from the big cities. As a part of the New York Metropolitan area, Patchogue has a reputation as an affluent bedroom community. Private cars run regularly from New York's JFK international airport while the village itself is full of charm. Renting a car to explore Long Island is highly recommended, with the nearby Gold Coast mansions a particular highlight.

A drive along the coast

A short drive up the East Coast from Patchogue is the Hamptons, an area well-known for its celebrity sightings, elegant private dining, and yacht clubs. The LongHouse Reserve features stunning sculptures from some of America's eminent artists and stretches out across 16 acres. Still, the center of Patchogue, and wider Suffolk County, revolve around its sunlit beaches. There are over ten different sand beaches to enjoy with a tranquil promenade for romantic evening walks. The nearby mariner offers boating trips out across the Long Island sound and provides beautiful views of the bay.

Fire Island is the premiere beach on Long Island. The white sands stretch out with views across the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Great South Bay on the other. The beach is cleaned and maintained by local authorities but can get busy during the warmer summer months.

The jewel of Patchogue's downtown neighborhood is the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts. Inside are 1,200 seats with an ornamentally crafted interior and excellent acoustics. The theatre plays a medley of live music, classical, and performing arts throughout the year.

Long Island is at its heart a winemaking region. Tours across the dozen wineries in Suffolk County are well worth the admission fee, with minicabs leaving from downtown Main Street each day. Sampling sessions typically include guided tours and dining.

How Can a Staging Area Help During Storm Damage Cleanup?

10/16/2020 (Permalink)

Contact SERVPRO today for assistance with storm flood damage in your Coram home.

SERVPRO technicians streamline the restoration of Coram properties through the use of multiple applications.

Flood damage in a Coram home can happen in many ways, and multiple areas of the structure can receive the effects. One common denominator during the restoration services is how SERVPRO techs handle the cleanup. They use a logical course of action that gets applied to fit the individual circumstances of the property that make each mitigation unique. The staging area for cleanup is one of those actions and usually has the following key elements:

  • Situated near a water source in the home such as a bathroom or laundry room in case the need for mixing specialized products arises
  • The floor gets covered with a heavy-duty drop cloth for cleanliness
  • All of the tools needed for the restoration services get placed in an organized fashion so they can be found easily by the techs

Can Flood Damage Occur From a Backed Up Storm Drain?

When flood damage happens in a Coram home that affects the drainage of a storm drain in a garage or basement, the resulting mess can be ugly. When these large outtake pipes back up due to getting overwhelmed, there is very little individuals can do. These pipes do not just drop water in the home; they bring debris and usually a smelly, black sludge that coats everything it touches. It is not uncommon for the water to have receded by the time SERVPRO techs arrive on the scene, mostly the sludge is still present. This type of cleanup requires multiple application, including:

  • Manual tools such as shovels to pick up the solids
  • Portable pumps to assist in removing any remaining water
  • Power scrubbers to remove stuck-on residues

Safety During Mitigation is Key

Until the water gets tested by the techs upon arrival, there is no way to know if any harmful elements are in the water in the home. If it receded quickly, those elements could be in porous materials such as sheetrock or through seepage, and be resident within the subfloor. SERVPRO techs generally advise homeowners to keep both residents of the property and pets out of the work area, mainly until the water gets tested. After testing to determine any hazards present, the techs treat the water with their professional biocides and antimicrobial agents. During the cleanup, they wear protective clothing and set up air scrubbers and often negative air chambers to keep airborne droplets either captured or flowing out and clean air from outside the home flowing in. In some cases, the techs may set up containment around the worksite to inhibit any cross-contamination.

The flooring of all types is the article in the home that needs the most assistance after this type of damage from water. Many basements have floating floors; usually, vinyl laminate or tile on top of the concrete slab, and they very often do not have a good outcome after exposure to this type of water. Concrete is semi-porous. While it does absorb some moisture, the use of the drying equipment SERVPRO utilizes forces the embedded moisture to rise. Then the surface can get disinfected to sanitary levels for reuse. The techs have access to a vast selection and cleaning solutions. Several types developed explicitly for use on concrete to leave no efflorescence, the white powdery residue that occurs when salts and minerals in the concrete come to the surface.

The final step in the restoration of this type is odor control. While the use of the cleaning solutions goes a long way towards limiting the odor from the water. Other actions include:

  • Removal of articles and building materials too damaged for restoration
  • Use of odor control equipment such as hydroxyl generators and thermal fogging
  • Scoping the property post-drying to ensure all areas show no residual moisture

Once the restoration services complete, the crew chief takes the homeowner through the property and goes over the actions taken, the items disposed of with permission, and any repairs that need to occur in the home. Once this walk-through completes, the property owner gets a written report that includes photographs of items with a detailed description of all restoration for the homeowner to use to file any insurance claims. Assisting individuals in expediting their reimbursement for the damage is another way that SERVPRO tries to make the bad situation in the home a little less stressful.

SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 924-1801 cleans up and restores homes from any size flood damage. The certified technicians arrive quickly and work to make the water damage a thing of the past, "Like it never even happened."

What Should I Do if My Carpet and Furniture Gets Wet After a Flash Flood?

7/29/2020 (Permalink)

We understand the need for rapid response and restoration to minimize the loss of your property. Call us right away we are available 24/7.

For Flood Damage Repair at Your Residence in Coram Call SERVPRO.

During this time of year, it is common that a vicious rainstorm can strike the Coram area. Once the rain starts pouring at a steady rate, flash flooding can occur. If your street, driveway, and yard start to get puddles and water is flowing on them, it is always a possibility that moisture can make its way into your house.

What can you do if my floors and personal items get wet?

During flood damage restoration in Coram, our SERVPRO technicians start by trying to remove as much water as possible by extracting it while it is still a liquid. Then we can set up a combination of air movers and dehumidifiers to remove the moisture that has soaked into your building materials and contents and evaporated into the air. If there is a significant amount of water, we can move all of your contents out of your house and dry them in a separate location to speed up the drying process. If our technicians and your insurance adjuster find it necessary, we can pack up all of your items, move them to another location and unpack them to dry them out.

How do you pack up my contents to move them?

Step 1: We start by placing the packing material flat on the surface we will be packing on.

Step 2: We then lay the item we are packing into the center of the packing material.

Step 3: Next, we fold the sides of the packing material so that your items are completely covered.

Step 4: We can then place more packing material into the box if needed.

Step 5: Once the item is wrapped and there is more packing material placed in the box, we put the item into the box.

Step 6: We then place more packing material on top of the item, so it does not shift during the move.

If the inside of your house ever gets flooded after a storm, call SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 924-1801 any time of the day.

How Long Do I Have to Clear Out Flood Damage?

6/8/2020 (Permalink)

Heavy summer showers bring flooding to our area. SERVPRO has the equipment and experience to restore your home.

Flooding can Destroy Patchogue Homes and Businesses if not Addressed Fast by Qualified Professionals Like our SERVPRO Team

As you might expect with any loss incident, there is a finite timeline to restore the damages to your Patchogue home before considerable tear-out and reconstruction are necessary. Addressing these pressing concerns is even more vital with conditions like flooding, as standing water can lead to exposure to contaminants like bacteria, viral pathogens, and other harmful microbes.

The pace in which flood damage in Patchogue homes gets out of control varies between loss incidents. However, any of these disasters carry the potential for widespread structural compromise and health hazards. Addressing these concerns is the priority of our responding SERVPRO technicians, as we have multiple emergency services and mitigation solutions that we can employ beginning the moment we arrive. Knowing what you need to do after these emergencies can ensure that steps get taken to resolve loss conditions as soon as possible.

What Should I Do First After Flooding?

The immediate steps that you should take following the onset of flooding in your home do not vary considerably. In most situations, the priority is protecting what matters most – namely, your family. Walls can get rebuilt, and contents can get restored or replaced, for the most part, so the priority should always be the safety and wellbeing of those exposed during a flood event. Here are some of the steps that you can take if you are unclear.

  • Contact SERVPRO – Reaching out to our professionals should always be one of the first things that you do after an emergency, which gets our experienced technicians mobilizing towards the mitigation and recovery of your home at any time.
  • Call Your Insurance Provider – You might be ahead to reach out to your insurance provider to see what (if any) insurance coverage exists in your plan for the restoration and recovery of flood damages in Patchogue. While many property owners have limited coverage in this regard, there are often portions of the restoration process that might get covered by your policy.
  • Protect What You Can – It is not always feasible to relocate some of your home's possessions and belongings during a flood. However, slow-moving damages can leave small windows to move your possessions to safer areas of the house to prevent irreparable damages.
  • Vacate the Premises if Necessary – You likely need to get out of the house to allow mitigation and restoration to occur.

Are Emergency Services Necessary?

Emergency services often occur before mitigation; the job scoping determines the full extent of the damage to the property. These preemptive tasks can help to reduce the spread and severity of flood conditions for later recovery efforts. We can conduct a few standard emergency services at our experienced emergency response team and our in-house contractors as soon as our team arrives, including:

  • Extraction – Surface water can penetrate exposed materials and continue to threaten the affected areas with more concentrated contaminants such as bacteria. With tools like our trash pumps and truck-mount pumps, we can remove surface water with debris quickly.
  • Controlled Demolition – Our contractors must determine what materials and structural elements are too compromised to restore. While it is one of our priorities to reduce rebuilding as much as possible, controlled demolition ensures that build back is more efficient and less expensive.
  • Muck-Out – Lingering debris, mud, and other solids left behind after water extraction can be hazardous for those exposed. We have several muck-out strategies, including wet vacuuming and shoveling, to manage the situation as efficiently as possible.

What Are the Threats of Natural Flooding?

Natural flooding can be one of the biggest threats to a residence, as we consider this penetrating water contaminated before it ever enters the house. As a blackwater incident, floodwater comes into contact with many different substances and contaminants in its path to your home. While our SERVPRO professionals have an extensive line of EPA-Approved cleaning products and practices, we limit our exposure to these threats as much as possible. Full personal protective equipment and containment barriers can help keep our team and the home's occupants protected from:

  • Bacteria
  • Viral Pathogens
  • Mud
  • Sewage
  • Oils/Chemicals

Natural flooding can be a substantial threat to residences in the area. Despite how challenging it might initially feel to make these flood losses, "Like it never even happened," our SERVPRO of Patchogue team can help. Contact us anytime at (631) 924-1801.

My Separated Garage is Inundated with Floodwater, What Can I do?

4/30/2020 (Permalink)

When you find your Patchogue home or garage underwater from a flood--Call SERVPRO for Extraction and Restoration

Floodwater Removal in Patchogue is as Simple as Calling SERVPRO.

Many Long Island residents have a separated garage, which is a vehicle-housing structure detached from their main house.  Several homeowners in Patchogue even have a detached garage connected to their boathouse.  While this seems convenient during good weather, it can cause a lot of headaches during stormy conditions.  Hurricanes, Nor’easters, and other severe storms routinely pass the Great South Bay throughout any given year.  Related storm surges and excess water from torrential rains can quickly cause flooding.  While these seemingly inevitable prospects are troubling, there are ways to limit damage and recover from such events.

Why is SERVPRO a Good Service Option for Handling Floodwater Removal in Patchogue?

There are numerous reasons why SERVPRO is an excellent service for floodwater removal from your separated garage in Patchogue.  Here are just a few of them:

  • The owners and technicians have decades of experience in handling these issues
  • Our technicians are trained and certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)
  • Workers are specifically certified in Water Damage Restoration and Applied Structural Drying
  • We are experienced in removing and disposing of hazardous water and waste
  • Our professionals use state-of-the-art equipment to remove floodwater and restore your separated garage
  • We are located near you, are available 24/7, and can often be on-site within four hours of your call

Is There Anything I Can Do Before a Storm in Patchogue to Limit Potential Floodwater Damage?

Before the arrival of a storm, there are a few things you can do to minimize potential floodwater damage.  These measures include:

  • Moving your car or truck out of the garage to higher ground
  • Trailering your boat and taking it to a safe storage location
  • Removing any valuable tools, equipment, or loose items that could float away or be destroyed by water
  • Boarding up any garage windows
  • Making sure your detached structure’s roof and gutters are in good condition
  • Ensuring that all drains around the standalone building are open and free of debris

Taking these steps prior to the arrival of storms and related flooding goes a long way to lessen the severity of potential floodwater damage.

What Happens After I Contact SERVPRO?

Once the storm has passed, call SERVPRO.  Within four hours or so, we are at your Patchogue location and ready to get to work.  Our trained and experienced technicians first work to rid your garage of standing water and flood-related waste.  They start by:

  • Employing extractors and pumps to remove standing water
  • Spraying disinfectants approved by the EPA on impacted surfaces
  • Raking and shoveling up mud and flood debris
  • Removing and disposing of everything affected by floodwaters

After the initial floodwater and debris removal, our workers get started on drying and deodorizing your garage.  This process occurs in the following stages:

  • Dehumidifiers, air movers, and injectidry systems are used to dry the interior surfaces of your garage
  • As this procedure is going on, moisture levels are measured with sensors and meters
  • Once moisture levels reach appropriate levels, the drying process is considered complete
  • Finally, after everything is dry, our technicians use foggers to disinfect and deodorize the building

How Does SERVPRO’s Service Benefit Me Over the Long-Term

Besides limiting the overall severity of your flood damage and returning your detached garage to operational condition, our service benefits you in other ways.  First, our policy of always trying to restore things before replacing them ultimately saves you money and time.  Over the long-term, SERVPRO’s work usually keeps your garage in top condition.  It helps eliminate harmful microorganisms that can cause sickness and structural dry rot over time.  Also, the deodorization we do neutralizes unpleasant and distracting odors.  The effect of this deodorizing often lasts quite a long time.

Having a home on the south shore of Long Island offers you an excellent seaside lifestyle, but it is not without weather-related risks.  Strong storms are relatively common year-round in this part of the Northeast.  When these pass over or around the Patchogue area, they can bring with them substantial storm surges and catastrophic flooding.  These floodwaters impact all structures on your property, especially those at lower elevations and nearest bodies of water.  Take appropriate precautions before all serious forecasted storms and rest assured that there are floodwater removal services that can help if your property floods.  The sooner you address storm-related issues and damage, the cheaper and quicker they are to correct or repair.

Remember not to panic when disaster strikes because that does not help.  Instead, whenever you experience catastrophic flooding or even a more minor water-related event, give SERVPRO of Patchogue a call at (631) 924-1801.

Snowmelt Flooding Drying for Patchogue Homes

After severe snowstorms that can leave Patchogue and other local parts of New York under feet of snow, it does not take long for conditions to change enough to begin melting. With rivers, streams, and other bodies of water already overwhelmed by the influx of torrential weather, this melting snow can overcome the natural barriers of banks to become groundwater flooding threats to nearby homes and businesses.

Natural flood damage in Patchogue homes must get treated like a category 3 loss, or blackwater situation unless this perceived level of contamination can get reclassified with definitive proof. The advantage of working as though this level of contamination exists can ensure that both our SERVPRO contractors and responding technicians take the appropriate levels of safety precautions regarding their personal safety and the wellbeing of our customers.

Drying up the damaged areas starts with focused extraction efforts using gas-powered trash pumps and the truck-mount extractors. Both of these units can remove water and solids together from the damaged area, making it the better choice for water removal tools versus the more traditional electric submersible pump. With surface water removed, it is easier to determine which surfaces have become exposed to the contaminated floodwater and must get discarded for involved drying and cleaning of surfaces beyond the top layer.

Content management plays a big part in flood recovery as well. By moving your belongings to a safe space, our SERVPRO professionals can reduce the total property loss and the devastation of even widespread flooding effects. Fast action for your possessions can help prevent irreparable damages and work to keep more of your treasured keepsakes close to the work area. We have in-house and off-site cleaning, drying, and deodorization techniques designed to make flood damage to your house and your belongings “Like it never even happened.”

No matter how overwhelming snowmelt flooding can be, treating this emergency as a contaminated loss can help to give your property the care and consideration it requires. You can count on the fast and confident response of our SERVPRO of Patchogue team after a flood by calling (631) 924-1801.

Patchogue and SERVPRO Deal with Storm-Related Biohazard Abatement and Cleanup

2/20/2020 (Permalink)

Biohazardous Storm Damage Results Can Be Remediated to Protect Patchogue Households

Help for Unexpected Biohazard Exposure After Flood Damage in Patchogue

As if the devastation of rooms soaked with floodwater and storm surge is not enough, Patchogue residents can discover that the damage done by storms and heavy seas reveals structural hazards. Not only things like a sagging ceiling heavy with many gallons of water or windows and doors smashed by high winds and airborne debris, but also the discovery of mold, lead paint, and asbestos. The deterioration of structural elements can cause these dangerous substances to mix freely in the rubble and residue needing cleanup after the storm.

Long Term Consequences Averted

Flood damage in Patchogue requires professional assessment. Evaluation by trained, certified, and experienced disaster technicians ensure we account for all aspects of the flood scenario, including sobering surprises like mold, wet and crumbled heat-proof coatings, and soaked vermiculite insulation that contains asbestos. Lathe and plaster and even older drywall can test positive for lead paint. Failure to manage these biohazards and dispose of them properly following OSHA and health regulations can expose you and your family to significant health risks.

Impact of Contamination on Water Extraction

Whenever SERVPRO crews face flood damage, we know the water is Category 3 and must be contained and disposed of as hazardous waste. Adding the rubble of disintegrated asbestos and lead paint-coated surfaces increases the level of caution. We arrange for certified individuals to remove any mold and asbestos and lead solids. Our team contains the potentially pathogen-laden water pumped and extracted for lawful disposal. Workers shield themselves from skin and respiratory contact with the hazards by donning full bodysuit personal protective equipment (PPE.) As the remediation finishes, EPA-registered disinfection products inhibit the continued growth of any lingering bacteria, viruses, molds, and other pathogens.

Structural Drying Safeguards

Because airborne mold, asbestos, and lead debris pose risks, SERVPRO must commence drying only after abatement of all the hazardous substances. Once we get the go-ahead that remediation is complete, our Applied Structural Drying Technicians (ASD) can design a configuration of air movers and heaters to accelerate the evaporation from soaked structures without fear of spreading biohazards. Our high-efficiency dehumidifiers then capture and contain excess water vapor for disposal.

SERVPRO of Patchogue’s well-qualified and equipped crews transform your flooded residences back to a safe and clean environment even if unexpected hazards arise. Call (631) 924-1801 our support and expertise at this challenging time.

The Truth Is You Are Not The Only Person Concerned About Effective Flood Damage Remediation in Coram

10/13/2019 (Permalink)

The kitchen is the most used room in the home other than the bathroom. Contact SERVPRO if your kitchen sustains flood damage.

How Does a Move-Out Help With Flood Damage in Coram Properties?

A move-out is a good way to remove the contents from a home undergoing flood damage restoration for cleaning and disinfection in another location outside of the work-site.

When SERVPRO technicians perform a move out for a Coram home with flood damage, it is an exacting process, and the technicians keep it organized through detailed notes and photographs. After the completion of the necessary actions to return the home to its pre-flood condition, the technicians move the items back into the house to their original placements whenever possible.

Items Cleaned Before Moving

SERVPRO technicians often save steps when conducting move-outs by cleaning items before carefully wrapping and packing. This eliminates the need to unpack at the storage location and clean on-site there. In this manner, the stored contents remain safely put away from the potential for damage until after the completion of restoration services on the property.

Where Are Items Stored?

There are different alternatives for the storage of the contents from the flood loss affected areas. If only a portion of the property has impacts from floodwater, it is feasible to place contents in a coordinated manner in a secure location on-site such as a garage or another area of the home.  Another alternative storage solution is a secure storage pod. However, pods are not cost-efficient if there are numerous items needing placement, and there is a need for more than a single pod.

Types of Home Contents Generally Not Salvageable

During flood loss mitigation, SERVPRO technicians check each item for restoration potential through their proprietary cleaning and disinfection methods.  However, furnishings made from composite wood frequently do not react well to the absorption of water and are usually a loss. This type of item is not typically included in a move-out and with the permission of the property owner or adjuster, discarded as a flood loss item.

SERVPRO of Patchogue at (631) 201-4813 works hard to restore homes with flood damage for local residents. They have a wide array of tools and experience to make the flood loss "Like it never even happened."

Preparing Your Home & Business for Winter Weather

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

Tips for Preparing Your Home for Winter Weather

  • Keep Cabinet doors open during cold spells. This allows warm air to circulate around pipes.
  • Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets, especially if the pipes for faucets run through unheated or uninsulated areas of your home.
  • Consider shutting off outdoor faucets. Find the shut-off valve in the basement or crawl space and turn it to “off.”
  • If you follow the previous step, then open the outdoor faucet to help insure it drains completely and the inner valve is shut off.
  • Ensure gutters are clean and secure. Leaves and debris accumulate, causing a damming effect on gutters, which could lead to roof problems and water damage.
  • Proper maintenance of your furnace can help reduce the risk of puffbacks.

Tips for Preparing Your Home for Winter Weather

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Ask SERVPRO of Patchogue about starting an Emergency Ready Profile for your business.

When Winter Weather Strikes... SERVPRO of Patchogue Fights Back!

FROZEN PIPES: A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. Your SERVPRO Franchise Professional is faster to any size disaster, bringing the latest equipment and training to help make your water damage “Like it never even happened.”

ICE DAMS: Ice dams can be a major problem during the winter season.  They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice.  When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof’s shingles and into the structure’s interior areas.  Your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional can help mitigate water damage caused by ice dams and help you get your structure back to preloss condition.

PUFFBACKS: A puffback is a messy furnace malfunction that occurs when an oil burner backfires, sending soot throughout your home or business. It can happen all at once, covering an interior in grimy soot, or a puffback can leak soot particles more gradually.  Equipped with training, tools and experience to quickly and efficiently clean and restore your home or business, your SERVPRO Franchise Professional will help make your puffback “Like it never even happened.”

FLU SEASON: Help prevent the spread of flue germs.  Homes and businesses can depend on their local SERVPRO Franchise Professional to clean and sanitize building materials, surfaces and contents following restoration industry standards, using professional cleaning products and EPA-registered cleaner and disinfectants.  SERVPRO Franchise Professionals are also trained and equipped to clean your HVAC and duct systems to help provide better air quality and help reduce the risk of circulating harmful contaminants.

  • Cover all of your home’s windows with precut plywood or hurricane shutters to protect your window from high winds.
  • Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
  • Keep all trees and shrubs well-trimmed so they are more wind resistant.
  • Turn off utilities as instructed. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.
  • Turn off propane tanks.
  • Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purpose such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water.

Tips from FEMA for Preparing Your Business for a Hurricane

  • Carefully assess how your company functions, both internally and externally, to determine which staff, materials, procedures and equipment are absolutely necessary to keep the business operating.
  • Identify operations critical to survival and recovery.
  • Plan what you will do if your building is not accessible.
    • Consider if you can run the business from a different location or from your home.
    • Develop relationships with other companies to use their facilities in case a disaster makes your location unusable.

Severe Weather Safety

10/17/2018 (Permalink)

Severe weather can happen any time, anywhere. Each year, Americans cope with an average of the following intense storms:

  • 10,000 severe thunderstorms
  • 5,000 floods or flash floods
  • 1,300 tornadoes
  • 2 land-falling deadly hurricanes

Approximately 98 percent of all presidentially declared disasters are weather related, leading to around 650 deaths per year and nearly $15 billion in damage. Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action, and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

Know Your Risk. The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you, your business, and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. Severe weather comes in many forms, and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

Take Action. Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business. Put together or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe space.

Be an Example. Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

Flood Facts & Tips

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river, or even in the desert - there is always potential for flood damage. Fema.gov reports in the last 5 years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods.  Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past does not mean you won't in the future. In fact, nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas, and even just one inch of flood damage in an average home can cost you up to 27,000.

According to the American Red Cross, floods cause more damage in the United States every year than other weather related disaster. The American Red Cross offers the following flood safety tips.

  • Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go the other way.  Six inches of swiftly moving water can knock you off your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go the other way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If a flood does strike your home of business, contact SERVPRO of Patchogue.  Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. The SERVPRO system is prepared to handle any sized disaster. When fire and water take control of your life, SERVPRO of Patchogue will help you take it back.

Are You Winter Weather Ready?

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Are you prepared for the coming cold weather? Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home and business if you are not ready for it. From heavy rain and freezing temperatures to damaging winds, sleet, or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared and help take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before colder weather hits.

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage tot he property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Roofs, water pipes, and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of all debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves an other obstructions can cause a damming effect, which can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate floor hazards potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open, allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting off the water at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.
  • Ask SERVPRO of Patchogue about completing an Emergency READY Profile (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no-cost assessment to your facility and provides you with a plan to get back in business fast following a disaster.

Storm Preparedness

6/6/2018 (Permalink)

BEFORE THE STORM

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • Postpone outdoor activities.
  • Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

DURING THE STORM

  • Use your battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates from local officials.
  • Avoid contact with corded phones. Use a corded telephone only for emergencies. Cordless and cellular telephones are safe to use.
  • Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. Unplug appliances and other electrical items such as computers and turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
  • Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes, and do not do laundry. Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
  • Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.
  • Avoid natural lightning rods such as a tall, isolated tree in an open area.
  • Avoid hilltops, open fields, the beach or a boat on the water.
  • Take shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid isolated sheds or other small structures in open areas.
  • Avoid contact with anything metal—tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, golf carts, golf clubs, and bicycles.
  • If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle

AFTER THE STORM

  • Never drive through a flooded roadway.
  • Stay away from storm-damaged areas to keep from putting yourself at risk from the effects of severe thunderstorms.
  • Continue to listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or to local radio and television stations for updated information or instructions, as access to roads or some parts of the community may be blocked.
  • Help people who may require special assistance, such as infants, children and the elderly or those with access or functional needs.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.
  • Watch your animals closely. Keep them under your direct control.
